Therapy Dog Wears Her Own Cap and Gown at LHS Commencement Ceremony

roxy golden retriever

Roxy is a nine-year-old Golden Retriever who’s been providing comfort and happiness to the students at Lawrence High School. As a therapy dog for four years now, Roxy joins the seniors as they graduate this spring. Roxy will even wear a cap and gown to join the graduates.

Her owner, English teacher Keri Lauxman, recalls the time when the LHS administration was skeptical about having a new therapy dog around. The school’s previous therapy dog already retired. But because of Lauxman’s persistence, she was able to convince the school.

Roxy is able to sense when something is not right with a student. A junior at the LHS who suffers from depression and anxiety, Andi Grimes, recalls how Roxy sat with him on the floor or spent a quiet moment with him. He expresses his joy that someone like Roxy can understand him.

It’ll be Roxy’s 5th year as a therapy dog for the LHS next year.

Army Veteran and Service Dog Were Denied Access at a Lowell Restaurant

service dog and owner denied at restaurant

Reggie Smith is an Army veteran who dislikes recalling his experiences in the Gulf War. His wife, Christene Smith, says that Reggie is having nightmares and tends to shut down when he hears certain noises.

When Reggie spoke about his struggles with a Veteran Affairs counselor, he realized that he was going through Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He figured out that he’d seek the assistance of Operation Delta Dog, a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs for veterans.

Finally, a 2-year old labrador chocolate mix named Triton was introduced to Reggie. Reggie said he immediately felt a connection with the dog. Triton would wake him up when he’s having nightmares and nudge him.

Just recently, Reggie had a bad experience when he was denied service at a Lowell restaurant where the employees refused his request to have his service dog with him. Despite Reggie’s explanation about the ADA law, still, they weren’t allowed.

Sarah Stratton, Operation Delta Dog’s operations coordinator, spoke with the restaurant owner, Edil Cunha, whose primary language was Portuguese. Cunha regretted the incident. His friend also explained to Reggie that he wasn’t aware of the ADA.

Because of the incident, Stratton hopes that governments would help create official certifications for service dogs. Since service dogs are going to be here for a long time, educating people would help.

Question: Can an airline require an assistance animal to travel in the baggage compartment?

Answer: The carrier may not require that the assistance animal travel in the baggage compartment unless the animal poses a threat to other passengers or its presence would cause a significant disruption in cabin service (for example, a miniature horse would likely not be accommodated because of its size).

Therapy Dogs May Be Allowed in Wards to Support the Sick

Source: Mirror.co.uk

If there are individuals who would benefit from the presence of therapy animals, these are the sick and terminally ill. Good news, therapy animals may be able to visit wards regularly. The Royal College of Nursing looks forward to the day that the all-out ban on assistance animals in hospitals be stopped.

To date, this endeavor is being pursued at Southampton General Hospital where Leo and Lottie, two therapy dogs, visit a couple of children with various health conditions. So far, Leo was able to help kids diagnosed with cancers and brain issues. For example, Leo helped divert James Davison’s attention while a nurse was plastering his leg.

While some organizations hesitate to allow dogs inside hospitals because of possible allergies and infections, Amanda Cheesley from the Royal College of Nursing says that these dogs can save a ton of lives. After all, they’ve been trained and insured.

Can a Business Question the Need for Multiple Assistance Animals?

multiple assistance animals

Question: Can a business question the need for multiple assistance animals?

Answer: It is not a black and white issue and there is room for a landlord, employer, airline, or business owner to question the need for multiple Assistance Animals. An owner might be entitled to multiple animals, but would have to have a reasonable justification for needing each animal.
