ADA Dispute on Detroit Settled

law

A man with a disability and a service animal made a complaint through the Civil Rights Hotline. This was after an employee from the Westborn markets demanded that he should show written proof about his service dog’s legality. The man refused and was asked to leave the market when he declined the demand.

Saima Mohsin, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said, “People with disabilities who use service animals should not have to suffer through invasive questions or provide written documentation for their dogs to go grocery shopping or engage in other activities of daily living.”

As a result, an investigation was done, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced the settlement on July 26, 2021. Westborn Inc. has agreed to adopt a non-discrimination policy, specifically with issues regarding service animal provisions. They will also train all of their employees on ADA mandates and start putting up displays that inform service animals are welcome in each of its stores.

Pilot Lends Plane for Service Dog Air Travel Training

Adrian Verburg lends his skill and 1947 Stinson 108-2 to help Thaliea get used to the sound and movement of airplanes. Thaliea is a Siberian Husky mix that works as a psychiatric assistance dog and was rescued after being abandoned on the streets of a northern Quebec community.

Her owner, Kayla Banfield, who suffers from an anxiety disability, said, “If I’m fidgeting my hands, she’ll make me stop. She’ll paw at me, and if I ignore her, she’ll put two paws on me, and if I continue to ignore her, she’ll jump up on me and pull both my arms down to her.”

With more training, Thaliea will get used to air travel and airport environments which will help her accompany Banfield for her travels to Nunavut where she’ll teach music, visual arts, and English to students from Grade 10 through 13.

Illinois Police Welcomes New Facility Dog

golden ret

The Bartlett Police Department welcomes Maverick, a 14-month-old Golden Retriever. Unlike police dogs, Maverick’s job is to be an ambassador in the Bartlett community by attending local events and mingling with residents in the same way police officers would.

Sgt. Tom Alagna, who is the dog’s primary handler, said, “So far, members of the community that have met him have loved him.” Aside from being an ambassador, Maverick will also provide emotional support to civilians and police officers in times of trauma, stress, and grief.

Maverick was donated by the  Canines 4 Comfort, a volunteer-run non profit in Round Lake that provides service animals for those in need. Bartlett residents can now expect to see Maverick in service.

How to Safely Evacuate Animals During a Wildfire

wildfire

It’s midsummer in the western part of the world and there’s no surprise why wildfires are raging in the western United States. Record-breaking drought and heatwaves are observed and you should take precautionary measures to save your animals from disasters during this hot season.

First of all, know the alert procedures in the area and stay updated on announcements from local authorities. Keep a go-bag ready. It should contain water, food for everyone for two weeks, bowls, eating utensils, a first-aid kit, a hygiene kit, radio, medications, pet stuff, and plastic bags for cleaning up waste.

Know where to go in case a wildfire displaces you and your household. Rehearse your evacuation procedure. Make backup plans of routes in case your current path is blocked. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

Veteran Organization Offers Canine Obedience Training

Veterans P.A.W.S. (Providing American Warriors Solace) will start offering dog obedience classes on August 7, 2021, to raise money for veterans in need of service animals. The veterans will receive the service dogs for free.

Ruth Koch, a retired Navy sailor who has suffered from anxiety and now trains, said, “These kinds of things actually help me get out in the world again.” She was inspired to train more dogs for obedience after meeting Willow and Ragnar, two service animals that were assigned to her.

Interested in having your dog trained in military style? Sign up for the classes through Veterans P.A.W.S. Facebook page.

Emotional Support Dog Now Recovering From Injury

brown lab

A 6-year-old therapy dog lost his ability to walk for unknown reasons. This was after he was deployed to provide comfort for those who have been affected by the June 24, 2021, Surfside condominium collapse.

Veterinarians suspect that Teddy, the Labrador-Basset Hound mix, may have a herniated disc. “He was probably starting to get some wear and tear on that back part of his spine, that just being so active for several weeks on end exacerbated it,” added Sophia Barrett, Teddy’s 30-year-old owner and handler.

Teddy underwent multiple sessions of massage, chiropractic therapies, and acupuncture. He is now back in Philadelphia, has taken a few steps, and continues his recovery process.

Service Dogs no Longer Publicly Banned in Belgian Region

The parliament in Wallonia has recently approved a decree which authorizes service dogs to be in public places such as train stations, care establishments, or even public squares. Wallonia also welcomes a new identification system.

Citizens who have service dogs are now obligated to secure a “Service Dog Passport” to certify the legality of their ownership and their dog’s job. As of now, 9 official service dog training associations are certified and tasked to issue this new passport.

While this new decree has made the lives of those in need of a service dog easier, the public allowance for training service animals has also been raised. From €3,000 for assistance dogs and €5,000 for guide dogs, the allowance now amounts to €7,500 per animal.

A Call to Design Robopets to be More Like Service Animals

robodog

Robopets have been a huge help for seniors in care homes. These artificial pups provide companionship without being high maintenance for the elderly. They also help caregivers feel at ease knowing those they look after are happy with a robotic cat or dog.

The problem is, they are programmed to be pets only and don’t benefit people with specific needs. Another issue is that service animals aren’t affordable to many due to the cost of training even just one dog.

So that opens the idea of programming a robopet to be a service animal. Imagine that. A robotic service animal that doesn’t need water or food to function. Minimal or no training is even required. The best part of it all is that a robotic service animal won’t be distracted when it’s near other animals or robots.

Some may argue that this idea removes the emotional bond between humans and dogs. For others, this argument is the same for owning a self-driving car. If you’ll allow a machine to drive you around, you can also allow a machine to do your dog’s job. What are your thoughts on this?

Stolen Service Dog Returned to Owner

brown lab

Remember Jimmy Nicholos who had his service dog stolen during New Year’s Eve? Through the combined effort of his friends, coworkers, boss, and local authorities, they were able to pressure the acquaintances of the dognapper to speak out and return Boots to Jimmy.

The boyfriend of the woman who took Boots and her close acquaintance agreed to take the stolen pup to the local police station. Jimmy sued the dognapper who was later identified as Nicole Lawrence.

The lawsuit filed by Nicholos seeks $100,000 in compensatory and unspecified punitive damages. In Sherman Oaks, L.A, where this incident happened, the penalty for stealing a service dog can be up to $10,000 and/or 1-year imprisonment.

4 Reasons not to Bring Your Dog to the Grand Canyon

grand canyon

The COVID-19 pandemic has made a lot of people miss the outdoors and other natural wonders. With that, visitation to the Grand Canyon is expected to rise as life slowly goes back to normal. But officials are urging hikers not to take their dogs with them. Here are reasons why:

It’s illegal – Pets aren’t allowed below the canyon’s rim. That includes emotional support animals with the exclusion of service dogs.

Trail paths and weather are hot and rough – Dogs don’t wear shoes so their paws will get burned during a hike. They are also prone to overheating under hot weather.

Hikes can be too long – Our beloved animals aren’t like us. While they are energetic at home, they aren’t as persevering as us when it comes to descending and ascending the canyon.

There are other people and animals – Some people won’t react well to the sight of your furry friend and vice versa. Dogs aren’t also fond of wild animals in the canyon such as coyotes, mules, sheep, and squirrels.
