Animal Shelter Teams Up With L.A. Chargers to Get Pets Adopted

cat adopt

It all started when a Chargers representative reached out about seeing how they could help Louis – a dog whose eyes were removed due to an eye infection. Louis also was hit by a car last January 2020 and was taken into the Helen Woodward Animal Center in December of the same year.

The Chargers then raised awareness for Louis’ adoption by sharing his story on all their social media accounts. That led to the partnership of the Chargers and the animals center. Now, the Chargers are appealing to the general public to adopt 12 of the pets at Helen Woodward.

Adoption fees and a Lazy Dog Pepper’s Pack will be covered and provided by both the NFL team and the Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar for the first five families that will adopt these pets. Those who are interested in adopting must first request an appointment at animalcenter.org.

Focus on Your Pet’s Oral Health This February

dog and brush

February is Pet Dental Health Month. It’s a reminder that our pets cannot brush their teeth and don’t carry toothbrushes with them wherever they go. It’s also our responsibility to do it for them at least twice a day.

Not taking care of your furry friend’s dental health puts them at risk of oral problems. Yellow teeth, stinky breath, or red gums are just some of them. 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will develop some form of oral disease by the age of three. That’s according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).

Here are the steps you follow to prevent pet oral problems: First, take your furry friend to the veterinarian for an examination and advice. Then, make sure your pet eats a clean and balanced diet.

Can Do Canines is a Minnesota-based non-profit. They have been making the quality of life for people with disabilities better for over a few years now since its inception in 1989. Among those they have helped is Bella Andrade, a senior in high school.

She was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy before her preschool years. “I relied a lot on my parents and my brother, who is amazing,” Bella said. But ever since Blaine, a service dog sent by Can Do Canines came, life has been very different for her.

Now, she feels confident and enabled to pursue her dreams. You can help Can Do Canines and people like Bella achieve more of their aspirations by taking part in the non-profit’s Can Do Canines Fetching Ball. It will be held on the 20th of February.

Valentines Day Celebration Benefits Local Rescue

valentines dog

The Tiny Hooves Rescue and Petting Zoo hosted its annual animal-gram fundraiser for three years in a row now. The money raised will be used by the local rescue program for the upkeep of the petting zoo and to help more animals in need.

Shelby Michalewicz, who runs the non-profit, said, “A lot of times in the community if (people) find something they will take it to the animal shelter, but usually animal shelters aren’t equipped to take on exotic or livestock animals,” she added, “We wanted to be a source for the community for all the above that are not a cat or a dog.”

National Guards in DC Surprised by A Furry Visit

dog and troop

Thousands of National Guard Troops will be stationed in Washington D.C. for a whole month in the light of the recent Capitol Hill siege. For the 250 guardsmen staying at the Hamilton Hotel, their Valentine’s season just went from cold to wholesome.

This is because a DC nonprofit called People Animals Love brought 12 therapy dogs two weeks ago as a gesture of gratitude for the troop’s noble service for their country.

Joe Palminteri, the Hamilton Hotel director told GNN, “Seeing hardened military men and women, roll around on the ground with these amazing dogs, as if no one is watching, truly filled our souls with happiness and gratitude.”

Anchorage Aims to Strengthen Leash Laws

dog on leash

Little is written about how the streams in Anchorage are having high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. The public trails are also said to be littered with dog poop and the diamonds in baseball parks have to be checked for fecal matter before children can play.

In addition to the poop issue, 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the US according to a World Health Organization (WHO) statistic. This prompted the Municipality of Anchorage to consider proposing amendments to Title 17, sections 17.05.010 and 17.10.010 of the municipal code.

If you live in Anchorage, it’s best to support the proposal. It will make the city a safer place to live in for humans and animals alike.

Puppy Bowl for People in Need of Service Animals

dog sport

The 4 Paws for Ability of Xenia, Ohio is getting ready to hold its second annual puppy bowl – a fundraising opportunity. The funds raised will be used to offset the cost of acquiring service animals for families or individuals in need.

Kalynn Clark, director of Volunteer Engagement with 4 Paws for Ability said, “It takes a lot of resources to train and place a service dog and we definitely don’t want to put that burden on our client families so our sponsors really help cover some of that cost.”

The cute game will be held virtually because of the pandemic. Find out more about the game, how to watch it, and how to support the cause through this Facebook link.

Oklahoma City Organization Aims to Aid Local Animals Affected by the Pandemic

feed horse

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Equine Regional Support Center has been saving the animals of Oklahoma City since 2019. Due to the pandemic, where people have lost jobs, local residents are needing help to feed and maintain their animals, especially horses.

“We distribute about 1,200 bags of supplemental feed to owners in the Oklahoma City area,” said Tom Persechino, director of equine welfare with the ASPCA. Keeping horses in their homes or stables is the best, but if the owner has to give up their animal due to dire need, the ASPCA has the complete resources to care for the horse and give it a new home.

Help an acquaintance in keeping their donkeys or horses by introducing them to the ASPCA Equine Regional Support Center. Their number is 405-423-1461 and their email is equinesupport@aspca.org

The Best Friends Animal Society, also known as the Rachael Ray Foundation, gave the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center (NACC) an $11,000 grant to support local cats and their owners. This grant is the second $11k to be given since 2020.

Michelle Dosson, the shelter’s Bureau Manager said, “We are grateful for the continued support of our community as well as for the generosity of our Friends group.” The grant will be used to increase neutering, spaying, vaccination, and microchip resources for ownership identification.

In the long run, NACC aims to shorten the stay of cats in the shelter as well as reduce the number of cats surrendered to them.
