Some Adorable Facts About Animals You Haven’t Heard Of

cardinals-1125156_1920

Fact #1: Cheetahs are so shy that zoos have to provide them with their own emotional support dogs.

Fact #2: Capybaras are animals with high sociability. They get along with a lot of other animals. That includes chickens, dogs, llamas, ducks, cats, turtles, and rabbits.

Fact #3: The stomping seagulls do on grass is called a “Rain Dance”. The purpose of this dance is to mimic rain by vibrating the ground lightly. They aren’t shuffling. They’re luring earthworms and other bugs to the surface.

Fact #4: A study made at the University Of Chicago found that rats are capable of empathy just like us humans.

Fact #5: The Northern Cardinal might be the most “Romantic” of all bird species. They only mate with one partner for life, sing before nesting, fly together, and feed each other with seeds beak-to-beak during courtship. Whoever made them the Angry Birds mascot never did their research.

How Venezuelan Police Animals Aid Communities Aside From Crime-Fighting

pony-farm-5240419_1920

Dogs have been used for centuries by law enforcement agencies to track and attack criminals. The same goes for horses as these majestic creatures have been ridden to chase after outlaws. But like their handlers, horses and dogs have also evolved to perform more rules in keeping order in a community than just working on the frontlines.

A good example of these animals doing side-roles are the horses Ivan and Hercules of the Mounted Police Branch at Long Circular Road, Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. During Carnivals, these horses are deployed as means for crowd-control.

Atom and Nacho are Belgian Malinois from the same police branch. Yet, their story is different. Instead of crowd control, their side-roles are school visits for routine safety checks and public demonstrations for public entertainment.

Can Emotional Support Animals Spread COVID-19 in Apartments?

stefan-heesch-wobqqGOq6wI-unsplash

The short answer is – No, there is no solid evidence stating that a domestic animal’s fur can carry the coronavirus from one person and infect another. Even if pets can carry the virus, it still won’t pose a high risk of infection as long as you and your pet stay 6-feet away from others while you wear a protective mask.

Apartment landlords or other rental property owners cannot reject or discriminate against a tenant who requires an emotional support or service animal. If the apartment rules do not allow animals, the property owner should ask the prospective tenant for a document from a health care provider stating that the tenant needs an ESA before letting them in.

The Difference between Pet Deposit, Fee, and Rent

kitty-491013_1920

Pet Deposit – A one-time fee that protects the landlord and the property from damages made by a pet. It may or may not be refundable depending on the condition of the unit once the tenant moves out. If there are damages, the pet deposit will cover the repairs. If not, the tenant gets to keep the deposit.

Pet Fee- A non-refundable charge tenants pay in a rental unit for the privilege of keeping a pet with them. Like a pet deposit, it is also a one-time fee.

Pet Rent – A recurring charge that is added to a tenant’s monthly rent. Like a pet fee, the pet rent is also for the privilege of keeping a pet in the apartment unit.

Canadian School District Now Allows Assistance Dogs in Schools

dog-training-5098572_1920

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district forbade bringing of animals and pets into school properties unless it was for learning purposes with the permission of the school principal. But recently, they have amended the rules regarding that.

Now, assistance dogs are allowed as long as the animals are certified and will not roam around school facilities. This allowed support for individuals with autism, seizures, and hearing problems.

Every dog to enter school premises based on the amendment must be a therapy, guide, or a service dog with a vest for identification. But first, parents must write a letter to the school district regarding the entry of the service dog. Attached to the letter should be a diagnosis of the child from a professional with a recommendation to use an assistance animal.

Deaf Therapy Dog Provides Comfort for Patients in Their Most Trying Times

pexels-zen-chung-5749112

Beethoven is a deaf 7-year-old, 100-pound mix of American Bulldog, Shar-Pei, Alaskan Malamute, Bullmastiff, and Terrier. Despite his disability, he never lets his deafness get in the way of providing relief for patients who are in the direst situations.

Some of the patients Beethoven has taken care of is a teenage boy with Huntington’s disease. He couldn’t move any part of his body but a single finger. Yet, the boy’s eyes lit up when he held Beethoven’s leash a month before he died in hospice care.

We owe Beethoven’s dedication as a therapy dog to his handler, Cynthia “Shanon” Zeisloft, a Muscogee County Sheriff’s Deputy. She is better known as Lt. Z or just Z.

The Vital Roles Veterinary Technicians Play in Clinics

pexels-international-fund-for-animal-welfare-5486962

Veterinary technicians are the ones who assist veterinarians during the hands-on care of animal patients. They also provide client education for animal care, serve various administrative roles in the clinic, and even specialize in a specific service area.

Heather Soder has been a certified veterinary technician since 1996. She has passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam and completed an accredited program in veterinary technology. The accreditation process either lasts for two or four years.

“I work with area animal shelters to obtain patients and help students with everything from performing physicals exams, bloodwork, and patient prep to gloving, gowning, and draping into surgery,” said Soder.

A Story of a Dog in a War-Torn Land That Our Soldier Cannot Leave Behind

pexels-pixabay-37642

A long time ago, U. S. Army Staff Sergeant Nick Vallejo arrived in Afghanistan for deployment. He met “Bane”, a 3-year-old Labrador-Collie Mix whose ears and tail were partially cut off by the barbaric locals. Bane had been seeking Nick out every breakfast where they both shared bacon.

Just about six months ago, SSgt. Vallejo made a plea for taking Bane home with him. His letter reached the inbox of Tory Mettler, a volunteer for Lorain County Dog Kennel and Fido’s Companion.

But before that, SSgt. Vallejo consulted with his wife Emily about taking Bane back home with him. Then they began raising $5,000 through an organization called Nowzad. Bane now lives with SSgt. Vallejo and his family in the U.S. where he will be given all the love and care he deserves.
