New Mexico Education Outreach Shifts to Online Animal Education Units

new mexico education outreach

Jean Gilbert has been a long time member of the Humane Society of Southern New Mexico (HSSNM). The focus of her work was to reach out to children about animal issues. Included in her outreach focuses on the importance of spaying or neutering animals, vaccinations, microchips, and the humane treatment of service animals and companion animals.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, her ways of reaching out have been closed. To keep teaching children the importance of animal care amidst the pandemic, she collaborated with Cruces Creatives maker space. “Putting together the units has been fulfilling, especially at this time, when it’s not possible to hold ‘Fur’ever Friends’ or ‘Critter Connection’ sessions in the schools or Boys & Girls Club,” Gilbert said.

Dr. Michael Blackwell’s AlignCare®

aligncare

Veterinary care is hardly affordable nowadays especially for middle and lower-class families. According to the University of Tennessee’s College of Social Work and the Access to Veterinary Care Coalition study, 28% percent of American households have reported having barriers to veterinary care in the past two years with money being the biggest barrier.

With Dr. Blackwell’s advocated AlignCare® system, families with pets are connected with veterinary service providers while leveraging community activities and resources. This means little to no cost of struggling families who wish to afford veterinary care. The AlignCare® system is Program for Pet Health Equity’s main project – a collaboration program led by Dr. Blackwell of the University of Tennessee’s along with various community partners.

Massachusetts Humane Society Animal Thanks Its Community

pets for companionship

Since March 16, Dakin Humane Society has only been able to accept pets through emergency surrenders. This led to the flooding of phone calls, direct messages, and emails to their networks from people who want to help.

To this day more than 275 animals have found their new homes. People who have struggled to feed their pets due to financial hardships caused by the pandemic have been given pet food through the Dakin’s Pet Food Aid program. The DHS has shared over 30,000 pounds of pet food with the help of various organization organizations, other animal shelters, and the general public. This has been made possible by your love of animals and Dakin Humane Society thanks you for that.

caring for injured birds

The Cape Fear Raptor Center, which opened in 2012, takes care of 400 birds a year. Its leading operator, Dr. Joni Shimp says that out of the 400 annual numbers, a tenth is brought in by the public.

Many of these birds are poisoned intentionally by angry farmers or by accident as these birds eat poisoned mice. Some are shot and others have been brought in by eating lead bullets. She said there are several outcomes to birds brought to the center: Very injured or sick birds are euthanized upon arrival. Those who recover but lose the ability to hunt are kept or are given to people for adoption.

Assistance Animal Training In Michigan Resumes as Organizations Join Together

animal training resumes

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order has halted PAWS’ training of assistance dogs in public areas. But with West Central Michigan YWCA and Community Food Club’s help, training resumes. The YWCA has offered to share space in its Sheldon Building at 25 Sheldon Blvd. SE, as training grounds of practical skills for the assistance dogs.

“We are pleased to partner with Paws With A Cause, who shares our commitment to accessibility for all,” YWCA CEO Charisse Mitchell said. Another nonprofit member-based grocery store, Community Food Club offered some of their facility areas. Since then, these areas which aren’t open to the public, have served as training grounds for grocery shopping skills of the assistance dogs.

Georgetown Teen Trains Puppy For Service

teen trains service animal

Mia Federico trains Mochi for Service Animal Graduation in February 2021. This idea started when her mother, Ellen Federico thought of her dog-loving daughter when she saw an ad online. Shortly after, Ellen and Mia met Mochi the Retriever-Mix on September 27, 2019. Since then, the Federicos volunteered for Canine Companions for Independence.

They liked the organization because it offers trained dogs to individuals in need for free. Other organizations give service animals for the cost of $10,000-$15,000 each. Mia grooms and brushes Mochi’s teeth daily along with two 30-minute sessions of training. Mia says, “I can imagine that the most rewarding part would be [the dog] graduating and seeing them with their new person”.

Missouri On A Step Closer to Punishing Fake Service Animal Owners

fake service animal

As St. Charles Republican, Rep. Chrissy Sommer ends her term, eight years of her work comes to fruition. Senate Bill 644 puts the person guilty of a misdemeanor if found misrepresenting a dog as a service animal just for the purpose of receiving accommodations under the ADA and the Fair Housing Act.

Impersonating a person with a disability and misrepresenting a service animal will be managed by Missouri’s Commission on Human Rights. Members of the Missouri House voted 137-6 for a decision to send Gov. Mike Parson this proposed law and last March the legislation moved through the Senate with a 28-1 vote. “I am so happy and proud to eventually get this passed,” Rep. Sommer said.

New York Veterinarian Passes from COVID-19 Infection

veterinarian passes

Harlem pet owner communities and neighbors are in mourning of the passing of Dr. Julie Butler. Growing up in New Rochelle, Dr. Butler earned her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University. She was the only African American in her class.

Katarina McGinnis, a pet owner and neighbor says, “It’s devastating because there are not a lot of women of color who are veterinarians”. Dr. Butler is said to never have turned people away from her clinic even if those in need of her service couldn’t pay. Passing at 62-years-old due to coronavirus complications, Dr. Butler leaves her husband, two children, a world of pet owners, and neighbors who deeply cared for and loved her.
