Underdog Unity is an initiative with a network of volunteers across the United Kingdom. For this this initiative, volunteers are matched with people in Sheffield who are in need of help caring for their dog. Services include walking, caring for, and taking the dogs of affected owners to vets.

“I had this idea a couple of weeks ago to create this network of volunteers across the UK, who can help dog owners who have been impacted by the coronavirus,” says Nadine Kayser, the charity’s founder, and CEO. She adds, “All the fantastic volunteers are helping people who are facing various issues, some are key workers who haven’t been able to look after their pets all the way through those suffering from mental health challenges.”

Service Dog Makes Life Easier for Florida Rehab Patients

Every day, Harley helps patients with Parkinson’s Disease in their personal therapy at St. Augustine Rehab Specialists. The 3-year-old Labrador Retriever’s presence, however, is just as important as his work. Harley and Melani Lomaglio, a physical therapist, were matched through Canine Companions for Independence a year ago.

“Parkinson’s causes what we call non-motor symptoms which is depression, anxiety, and apathy. So, when something like coronavirus comes along, all of those things are exacerbated,” said Lomaglio. Whenever a session begins, Harley’s human also says, “He immediately clears their mind. They’re not thinking about coronavirus when they walk through the door. They’re thinking: “Oh, there’s Harley!”

Despite the viral outbreak, the CCI is working hard to help more people in need of therapy and service. More than 400 people nationwide are waiting for their service dogs.

Arkansas Animal Shelter Adoptions Increase Amidst Pandemic

pet adoption

Inside the Fayetteville Animal Shelter, there are no cats left as all the other animals have already been adopted. However, there are still three dogs left without a home compared to the 12 to 25 animals the shelter houses before the pandemic.

Superintendent Justine Lentz has stated, “Hopefully we’re kind of reaching the peak of things here, of course we don’t know, no one does, but we just want to make sure we’re prepared in case things do get worse to be able to help animals who truly are in a life threatening situation. But our community support has just been amazing”. As of now, all adoption fees by the shelter are being waived.

Don’t Forget the Unfortunate Ones

helping stray animals

While our news feeds are flooded by goofy animals providing us isolation relief, there are strays who don’t get the share of attention and care. These stray animals rely on vegetable markets for food. As human activity is exponentially reduced and businesses are closed, these animals are facing starvation.

Here small daily acts which people can do to help stray animals be safe and healthy:

  • Place water and food bowls outside your houses.
  • Coordinate with other residents in your neighborhood to do the same and help the strays in your locality avoid starvation.
  • Speak to local authorities and animal welfare organizations for animal assistance as they can aid in decision making and help in caring for stray animals during the pandemic.

Animals: Our Light of Hope in a Time of Uncertainty

chihuahua

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the world we live in and mostly in a depressive tone. But despite the gloom of isolation in our homes, the animals we live with do their best to keep us happy even when they’re oblivious to what’s happening outside.

Megan Mueller, the Elizabeth Arnold Stevens Junior Professor at Cummings School said, “A lot of us are connecting remotely with other people right now, and that’s great. But pets are physically present in a way that other forms of social and emotional support aren’t these days for many people, and there’s really something to having that tactile component of petting or touching a pet.”

Seven Heroes Honored

Last February 24, The American Humane’s annual Palm Beach luncheon honored seven canines (Alice, Sgt.Yeager, Dax, Jeanie, Lady, Piglet, and Gus.) with the Hero Dog Awards. Each has its own heroic story to tell:

Alice helped a shooting victim by alerting him to oncoming seizures and assisting him with his balance issues.

Sgt. Yeager was an army dog that led more than 100 patrols in Iraq and Afghanistan with Marines and located dozens of explosive devices.

Dax apprehended more than 70 suspects, found dozens of missing children and adults, and participated in 100 narcotic searches yielding a lot of invaluable evidence.

More than 300 people attended the luncheon in which the proceeds go to the American Humane.

Los Angeles Animal Shelters Closed for COVID-19 Protection

closed

Last Friday, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the closure of North Central and West Valley animal shelters after a massive transfer into foster homes of sheltered animals.

When shelter officials got busy creating shelter space as the pandemic worsened in March, 2,232 animals were divided and moved into foster homes. Some were reunited with their owners and some of the animals will be moved to one of the other four shelter facilities (East Valley, Harbor, Chesterfield Square, or West Los Angeles) for pandemic protection.

“In order to continue providing excellent care for our City’s animals during the COVID-19 crisis and safety precautions for our employees, beginning on Monday, April 13th, the LA Animal Services department (LAAS) will close its West Valley and North Central Animal Services Centers,” Garcetti said.

For those who are interested in adopting, visit LA Animal Service’s website or call 888-452-7381.

Devanshi Shah Explains Why Pets Are Better Companions During a Lockdown

pets companions lockdown

Devanshi Shah, Founder and CEO of Pet Connect, in Hyderabad shares:

  • Pets give us a sense of purpose. People who are office goers lack a mission in daily life. Owning a pet gives us all a real sense of responsibility with emotional gratification.
  • Pets keep us emotionally strong. Being with a pet at home is a better situation than being alone.
  • Owning a pet can be mentally stimulating. The use of TV, mobile phones, and the internet make us less perceptive and mentally proactive. Meanwhile, owning a dog that is an intelligent being can mentally challenge you to create or improvise activities that are good for both of your brains.

Pet Therapy Video to Fight Quarantine Loneliness

pet therapy videos

Therapy Animal Coalition, Jacksonville’s nonprofit, puts together a virtual project in which pet owners and animal therapy teams share videos to help people in isolation curb their loneliness.

The project has been created and is running for a few days now but videos are still being submitted. As long as there are people who need a virtual furry connection, the program will continue.

Therapy Animal Coalition Board Kristi Leonard says, “The benefit of doing this is we have so many people who want to be a therapy team with their animals, but sometimes animals are unable to make the certification cut due to many different reasons.” Videos to be submitted can be 30 to 60 seconds long which features animals with uplifting actions.
