non profit boost operations

The Helen Woodward Animal Center of San Diego increases its Pet Food Assistance program activities for community members who recently lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Through their AniMeals program, starting March 23, 2020, the non-profit organization will drive through the San Diego area for pet food distributions at no cost. Pet food distributions will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Given supplies are for two weeks of dog or cat food. Households must have a maximum of 3 pets. Only those who lost their jobs due to the quarantines and closures can avail of the program and are required to fill out a pick-up appointment request form at https://animalcenter.org/programs-services/animeals. Those who want to help can visit this site as well.

Questions Answered by the WHO for Pet-Owners During the COVID-19 Outbreak

faqs

Can dogs or cats be infected by the SARS-CoV-2?

No, there is no evidence for that.

Can my pet be a conduit for viral transmission?

Yes, a healthy person can get infected by the virus if that person touches an animal that an infected person has sneezed or coughed on.

If I’m an infected person, what precautions can I do to care for my pet and avoid spreading the virus?

Call your doctor and veterinarian for any issues on the matter. Disinfect your hands often and wear a face mask when around other healthy people, animals who are also with you in a medical facility. Don’t cough directly on animals and people and minimize your contact with others.

Shelter Cats Find Foster Homes Amid COVID-19 Crisis

shelter cats

As California Governor Gavin Newsom orders citizens to home-quarantine, it isn’t just the people who feel the effects of the pandemic. Cats in California shelters face the risk of receiving minimal care since the general public cannot visit them for adoption.

The Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) battles this issue by sending more than 35 of their sheltered cats to foster homes. This is a win-win situation as the adopted cats will receive proper loving care by their foster homes and citizens who receive the cats will find companionship during the quarantine.

Interested Californians may inquire about fostering or share their support by emailing info@asapcats.org or calling 805-683-3368.

Dogs and Cats Cannot Be Affected by Covid-19

pets cannot be affected

The coronavirus pandemic is said to be zoonotic – meaning that it can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. But only bats and civet cats are known to be infected and carriers. This raises a question among pet owners whether their four-legged owners can get sick by the infection or not.

“All health organizations and veterinary organizations confirmed that there is no threat of getting the virus from your dogs, cats or other pets. Although they do continue to monitor and evaluate this, at this point interaction with your pets is fine,” says Brian Weltge, the President & CEO of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

Puppies to Help Improve Students’ Academic Concentration

therapy dogs help students

You might think that the presence of a cute puppy in the classroom would be distracting for students. Educational experts beg to differ. Therapy dogs Arlo and Romeo are there to help kids relax and concentrate especially during times of exams.

This research has inspired Andover College to welcome the two puppies in order to reassure and support students on the campus. “The aim of introducing therapy dogs to the college is to help students to calm down and relax during difficult times. Arlo and Romeo will also help students with their communication skills and to become more confident within themselves,” a spokesman for the college explained.

Free Pet Food Delivery for Low-Income and Homebound Senior Pet Owners

free pet food

There are homebound seniors and low-income pet owners who’d rather feed their pets than buy their own medications. Worse, they would feed their own food and rather starve.

A 2015 study by the Open Journal of Animal Sciences has shown that about one-third of the pet owners with incomes less than $50,000 said that access to free or low-cost pet food would have helped keep the pet in the home.

This is where Sam’s Hope comes in, a “meals-on-wheels” nonprofit organization that delivers free pet food to pet owners with low income. That way, pet owners will not have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets.

English Firefighters Rescued Animals Once a Week

firefighters rescue animals

The United Kingdom’s Home Office has shown that Oxfordshire’s Fire and Rescue Service went to an average of 1.3 animal rescues per week in 2018-19. These rescues done on animals to help them out of tricky situations are just some of the 5,000 rescues carried throughout England.

Fire and rescue services, however, encourage people who are asking assistance for animals to contact the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) first to avoid the unnecessary calling of fire and rescue services. The RSPCA says that the assistance of firefighters is an important asset to their officers as well.

COVID-19 Infected Individuals to Quarantine Before Going to Veterinarians

quarantine before going to vet

Michael J. Watts, D.V.M. is a companion animal general practitioner and owner of Clevenger’s Corner Veterinary Care in Amissville. He strongly advised individuals who have been infected with the coronavirus to seek clearance from health experts before taking their pets to a veterinarian’s clinic.

“If you are sick with COVID-19 you need to be careful to avoid transmitting it to other people. Applying some common-sense measures can help prevent that from happening.”

One of these measures is to exercise caution when interacting with pets including service animals. Infected individuals are also strongly advised to tell their physicians and public health officials that they have a pet or other animals in their homes.

(Note that there is still no evidence that pets can become sick after being exposed to the virus.)

COVID-19 Must Include Protecting Animals of College and University Campuses

dog and student

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, “[a]t this time, there is no evidence that companion animals including pets can be infected with or spread COVID-19.”

But despite the CDC’s confident report, Universities and Colleges are still planning ways to provide health and well-being to their students, faculty, and staff. It should be included in their plans to address the issues related to using animal models in ongoing research and issues on service animals and emotional support animals.

Ever since a dog tested positive of a COVID-19 infection despite its validity, it does not alter potential concerns and liabilities tertiary institutions will face in case an infection breaks out.
