As part of their animal ambassador program, Adam School Elementary took their students out to pay Santa Maria animal shelter a visit. This animal shelter works with hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits.

According to those who organized the ambassador program, the kids would be able to learn how to care for the animals and get involved in the community. The event also taught them to be careful around service dogs.

Future Service Dogs Underwent Training At Oakland International Airport

dogs for the blind

It was a memorable Saturday morning at Oakland International Airport for dozens of dogs, accompanied by their temporary owners, have been trained to become guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired.

Christine Benninger, CEO of Guide Dogs For The Blind, mentions that the future service dogs would go through a year and a half of training, and it is this intense training that distinguishes true service dogs from fake service dogs.

Michelle Carson who has benefited from the program says that her guide dog Rhiannon has helped her go anywhere and feel safe for five years.

Saturday Event Held To Raise Awareness About Dogs and Animals In Need

saturday event

A fundraising event was held on a Saturday at Big Whiskey BBQ Co. in Bluefield.

Big Whiskey invited two organizations, Pit Bulls Second Chance Rescue and the Animal Disaster Relief Coalition, to set up their tents and make customers who came to dine become aware of pets and animals in need. Basically, these organizations help animals reunite with their owners during disasters, and rescue pit bulls, train them, and help them find a new home.

A service dog named Cora, a pit bull and Weimaraner mix, was also busy making friends with those who came to the Saturday event.

Understanding Service Animal and Emotional Support Animal Laws Better

clearing up misconceptions

There’s a lot of confusion happening around service animals and emotional support animals. We hear about peacocks in planes, miniature horses guiding someone with visual impairments, and more. The problem is that only a few people understand the laws that apply to these assistance animals and because of that, controversies have arisen.

To clear up the misconceptions about service animals and emotional support animals, we need to consider three federal laws: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Fair Housing Act (FHA), and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA).

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – Under the ADA, service animals can be dogs or miniature horses that are trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities. For example, a service dog of any breed is trained to alert his handler who’s about to have a seizure attack. The dog can also remind the person to take his prescribed medications. If its handler goes to a public place, the animal can accompany him as well, and people cannot require proof from the handler that the animal is certified.

The Fair Housing Act (FHA) – The FHA applies to emotional support animals. Emotional support animals don’t need any specialized training and are there to offer love and support to their owner. The animal can be a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, or something else. Under the FHA, people with physical or mental disabilities should not be turned away from housing because of the emotional support animal. This covers buildings and apartments with a no pets policy. However, when it comes to public places of accommodation such as a plaza, a business owner might not allow your emotional support animal (because such is not subject to the FHA).

The Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) – Please take note that airlines may not accept service animals that are questionable (usually, exotic animals such as snakes, reptiles, and spiders). Animals that may disrupt other passengers or are too heavy may be excluded as well. If you’re planning to travel with an emotional support animal, you should provide documentation from a licensed health professional.

Aberdeen Airport Therapy Dogs Alleviate Stress

airport dogs

In the bustling Aberdeen International Airport, anxiety and confusion cannot be avoided. Luckily, 3 therapy dogs are on duty. The Canine Crew, composed of Noodle the Beagle, Breagh the Golden Retriever, and Grace the Scottish Deerhound are part of the airport’s “therapets”. Canine Concern Scotland introduced the idea of using therapy dogs for passengers who are flight-anxious.

A passenger’s mood brightens when they see the dogs. The therapet’s presence lowers blood pressure and can even provide assistance for those who require emotional support. “People are now saying they want to fly from Aberdeen because it’s the only airport in the UK to do this. The only danger is that people miss their flights because they are so well distracted by the dogs.” Said Fraser Bain, the airport’s duty manager.

Realizing The Power Of Love As A Dog Owner

power of love

Tzivia Gover was brisk-walking one morning with her dog Corby. She had been planning to do so as she read an article about how it was healthy for the heart. But during their walk, she met another woman who stopped them. Not really interested in small talk, Gover had no choice. Prior to that morning, Gover experienced heartbreak in her recent breakup.

The woman simply asked what kind of dog Corby was and the conversation progressed from an inquiry to the sharing of realizations. Gover found out that she and the woman learned the same lesson of welcoming their 1st dog into their lives. “Love is simple, good medicine. Sometimes we are made better by loving a dog. Sometimes we are made better by a dog loving us.” Said Gover.

A Dog Can Help You Grieve During Loss

dogs help you grieve

Louise Suzanne Boyd lost her daughter in August 2011. Her daughter, Elianna, passed away due to a brain hemorrhage at the age of 12. As a parent, losing a child is one of the greatest pains they can experience. Louise wishes that this kind of pain doesn’t get to be experienced by anyone else. But her family had Ace, a Boston Terrier that they adopted years before Elianna’s death.

She recalls that Ace and Elianna shared a very special relationship. Despite Ace being an imperfect dog, he was the best dog that Elianna ever had. Louise copes with the loss by living with the memory of her daughter’s love through Ace. I do believe to this day that Elianna was sending energy through Ace, her beloved dog.”

Dogs Teach You To Value Life

dogs teach you about life

There are things that are abundant, but for a dog’s years of life, that’s not the case. Dr. Stacey Schell’s dog Bella had her 10th birthday a few days ago, and because of that, she learns a valuable lesson. When we notice that our loved one’s time with us is slowly running out, only then do we realize how important this loved one is. We also start to dread the thought of the time when they leave us and how life would be without them.

That is the kind dread that we tend to bury but will always surface no matter what. Despite the emptiness that we feel when facing mortality, the gratitude that we express because of that is an important lesson to be learned. Schell said, “But even the deep and painful hurt that comes with this has its meaning, I’ve found. It’s led me to work harder to be aware of the subtle aspects of life with Bella.”

How Therapy Dogs Aid in Students’ Learning

learning

Life at school isn’t easy, and at the Linden Lodge School in Wimbledon, children have a variety of learning difficulties. For children with special conditions, it can be daunting to learn since they don’t function like the others who normally do. So, the school decided to bring therapy dogs to attend classes with the children.

The reason why dogs reduce anxiety in learning is that their calming presence promotes the release of oxytocin in the brain. When the hormone is released, the nervous system calms down which makes learning more likely to take place.

Because of the dogs, there has been a significant increase in student attendance and performance. The students were more motivated to learn and had a better relationship with their peers and teachers.
