Flying With Animal Allergies: What To Do

allergies and flying

People with disabilities need to have their service animals with them at all times, even in flights. In the case of emotional support animals and pets, the circumstances differ.

However, as a traveling person who’s allergic to animals, what should you do on a flight to avoid an allergic reaction?

Be sure to tell the crew member or the airport desk about your health situation. It is the airline’s responsibility to put their customer’s welfare first. If you happen to seat near a person with a pet, either you or that person with the disability will be moved further away.

Ross Feinstein of American Airlines said that for an allergic customer, the airline will “separate the customer with the allergy as far apart as possible from the customer with the cabin pet.”

How to Cope With Losing Man’s Best Friend

dealing with loss of dog

Your dog is a part of your family and even more than that. He can be a comforter, a best friend, a guardian – you name it.

Saying goodbye to him can be hard on your part. It never gets easier every time you do so, and nobody deserves to be subjected to that level of grief. Yet, death is unavoidable and we’ll eventually leave the world. So, how are supposed to deal with the death of your pet?

Grieve at your own pace. Don’t force yourself or rush moving on, only time will tell and not others. Remember that your negative reaction is normal, so don’t suppress it. Even dogs do feel sadness, shock, and anger. But like every living thing out there, the reaction is a part of life.

Take care and look after yourself because others will get affected when they see you hurt, may that someone be your other dog or a family member.

How Dogs at Home Benefit the Kids

puppy and kid

Dogs are great and all, and owning one can make you feel less lonely. Even for growing children, the benefits of having dogs are spectacular. Hayley Christian of the School of Population and Global Health in Australia concluded an as-yet-unpublished study on family dogs. The findings connect to the previous works about children developing better when they grow up around dogs.

“We simply looked at the kids with a dog and those that did not have a dog. Even in a very young age group, those with a dog were more physically active,” Christian told Fatherly. “Those with a family dog were also doing better developmentally, particularly with prosocial behaviors, when they interacted with adults and other children.”

Pets Help Us in Ways We Don’t Always Notice

pets help us in many ways

We include pets in our lives for various reasons. These reasons might be security and protection. But whatever reasons they are, it cannot be denied that an animal’s presence helps us in ways that we may not always notice.

For example, a study was made on 97 pet owners where they were subjected to feel social rejection. When they were asked to write about their best friends, some of them wrote about their pets. The researchers found out that those who thought about their pets felt the same power of emotional recovery from rejection as those who thought about their human best friends.

Allen McConnell, a professor of Psychology at Miami University and writer at Psychology Today, stated that “They (the pets) become as much a part of the self as many family members.”

Unicorn Girl Gets Her Dreams to Come True

unicorn horse

As Zoeylyn Avarelo of Biloxi opens her birthday gifts during her seventh birthday party, her excitement levels to a 100,000%. This is because a unicorn visited her. The little girl’s parents knew how much she loved mythical animals. So they called different petting zoos to have a pony dressed as a unicorn and come to the celebration. Mythical animals are rare and expensive as they were charged $250-$300.

Luckily, Megan Plaisance, the mini-unicorn owner and a part of Fidelis Hooves – a therapy horse group from Louisiana, heard about the party from Facebook. Megan and her husband brought Cadence as they wanted to grant the little girl’s wish. “I decided to drive over an hour and a half to do that for her even though we just do therapy. We should always remember that it’s always important to bring joy and happiness to people that need it more than the money,” Plaisance said.

It Is an Owner’s Duty to Keep Their Pets Healthy

Complaints were sent to Boksburg SPCA because pet owners were denied medical care for their pets. The complaints came from owners who were found to afford private or public veterinary care for their animals. The Boksburg SPCA manager, Maggie Mudd, said that only owners who really cannot afford veterinary services can get assistance for veterinary services.

To avail services, owners must fill in an alimony form. It is a form that asks a person’s monthly income, expenditure, and how many dependants and animals they have. The rule applies to pensioners as well. “From this information, it is then possible for our staff to determine if a person can be assisted by the SPCA, or if they can actually afford to go to their local veterinary for the medical treatment that they are wanting,” Mudd said.

A Worthwhile Struggle: Looking After 400 Animals

looking after zoo animals

The Taronga Zoo Wildlife Hospital looks after 4000 animals. Despite staffed by 17 people on a hectic schedule, the job is still rewarding. The challenge of a wide variety of tasks makes the place amazing to work in, said Dr. Larry Vogelnest. Their knowledge of treating domesticated animals evolve to face problems and conditions that nobody else has seen before. Because of this, they have been known throughout other zoos locally and overseas. These zoos often contact them seeking advice.

“It is a rollercoaster, one day it can be really exciting – like a birth or a release – but not all are happy days; sometimes it can be about dealing with ill animals or something that’s come in that you cannot save. You can plan the day but that can quickly go out the window,” said Libby Hall, the hospital manager. After treating animals, they release them into the wild with trackers. The reason for this is because they conduct studies and research which they consider to be the job’s icing of the cake.

How to Behave Around a Service Dog

etiquette service dogs

The number of service dogs has increased and so did animal lovers. A common misconception is that service dogs are like house pets. That is why Erin Sibley Doerwald of Santa Fe shares her insights on how people should behave in the presence of a service dog.

Service dogs are trained differently from ordinary house pets. Interacting with service dogs can disrupt their work which can be dangerous for the human it accompanies.

So, the next time you see a service dog, it is important to know which type of service the dog does. Some services performed can be friendly for interaction and others are not. If you want to touch the dog or interact with it, ask its human first.

Training to Be a Service Dog

shep

Sonia Holwegner has seven kids. Aside from her motherly duties, she also trains puppies to be service dogs. One of these puppies she trains is a Golden Retriever named Shep. At Shep’s young age, she trains him to be obedient and nice. She also trains him to greet people politely, do escalators, and be sociable as to not get scared in public places and around strangers.

Holwegner will have Shep for about a year and a half. After initial training, Shep will be sent to more advanced training with an organization called B.C. and Alberta Guide Dogs.

In the organization, Shep will learn things like how to push buttons to open up wheelchair doors for his person. During training, treats are also not encouraged as it is important for the dogs to listen without them. Not all dogs get to pass training. Those who failed to pass get put up for adoption.

PAWS Continues to Train Pet Therapy Teams

PAWS

Any owner and their pet can be a therapy team. Yet, all of these aspiring comfort bringers must undergo screening and a two-step training process at the Millsboro PAWS for People.

But it doesn’t mean that it will be quick and easy. The owners must have their pets rabies-free to qualify as a pet therapy team. This goes the same for Jeannie, Anna, and Kylie, their 5-year-old Australian Labradoodle.

After being qualified for training, the aspiring team gets evaluated on how well they work together and how good they can exhibit basic commands. There are also more important points to learn for the team and once completed, they can start their work as a team. That is to provide pet-assisted therapy to those in need at schools, hospitals or nursing homes at Delaware.
