Hydrotherapy: What’s It to Canines?

hydrotherapy

Dogs experience some illnesses humans do and undergo the same conditions after an operation. This also means they can be rehabilitated by methods that humans use – one of these methods is hydrotherapy. The Heal Animal Wellness and Rehabilitation at Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong Island, was built specifically for dogs in need of hydrotherapy.

Hydrotherapy is a type of alternative medicine that uses water for pain relief and treatment. The process involves the exercise of motor skills in a pool of water and is known for treating conditions such as arthritis and partial paralysis, both of which are known to be suffered by dogs. In addition to arthritis, dogs also suffer from hip dysplasia and have limited mobility after an operation.

Dogs who suffer or have limited mobility will deteriorate faster. To save them and give them a long healthy life, they must exercise full mobility at all times. Since there are illnesses that can hinder mobility in dogs, hydrotherapy is a good way to cure them.

Pet Crematory Services Open in West Virginia

pet crematory

Pets are an important part of our lives so they deserve to have a proper send off when they pass. But not every household gets to have proper aftercare for their departed pets, especially for the folks at Jefferson County. Reasons for this include housing developments that don’t allow pet burials or apartment renters who have nowhere to get their pets buried.

The Peaceful Valley Animal Crematory which is run by the Hough family opens up their services for those who want to give their pets a proper send-off. They also provide commemorative services such as crafting jewelry with their pet’s ash in it.

All the time, they send a sympathy card with a small clipping of hair from their pet with the pet’s name inside. “We’ve had pets, and we know what it’s like to go through that, and we try to be relatable the best we can and offer as much comfort as we possibly can.” – Sarah Hough, one of the owners.

Proposal to Showcase Shelter Dogs for Adoption in Courthouse Rejected

court

Anne Fricker is a Chief Probate Deputy for the County of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She proposed the idea of showcasing dogs from the McKamey Animal Center and the Humane Educational Society to visit her office. She loves animals and this is her reason for proposing as she wants the shelter dogs to have an increased chance for adoption.

But not everything is a happy ending as the Hamilton commission reverses the decision of showcasing sheltered dogs for a reason – allergies. Employees at her workplace expressed the concerns of allergies.

Yet, Fricker defended her cause saying, “The people who are allergic to dogs are being exposed to these dogs already, so I don’t see how it would be much different than keeping a dog and having it in our office.”

District 3 Commissioner Greg Martin was against the idea but also stated that it didn’t mean that the commission did not like dogs.

Pricey But Protective Service Dogs

service dog

Dogs are known to provide emotional support. On top of that, they can also be trained for more specific tasks. Examples of these tasks are detecting abnormal insulin balance in a person’s body or recognizing the start of a seizure. Because of these extensive training that the canines undergo, a high price must also be paid.

The placement fee for the service dog is $17,000 alone and the cost for training ranges from $40,000 to $60,000. This makes it difficult for families to obtain service dogs even when they need them. Yet, 4 Paws for Ability (provider of the task-trained dogs) helps families with their fundraisings to make it happen.

Girl With a Heart for Animals and People Gets Nominated for Community Hero award

girl nominated for award

Charlotte Phillips is an 18-year-old girl from Bushey. She volunteered charity for disabled children through the Riding for the Disabled Association since 2014. As a lady who also has a passion for animals, she saw the RDA as a perfect place to display kindness for both animals and disabled children.

Phillips has voluntarily ridden many times for the association’s competitions. Because of that, she helped a lot of people with physical and learning disabilities and autism. “This charity is so important to me because of the amazing work they do helping all kinds of people with a variety of disabilities,” Phillips said.

She never thought that she would be nominated for an award for doing something of second nature to her.

Those who are nominated for the Community Hero Award will be awarded by Watford businesses.

Horses Join the List of Therapy Animals

horses for therapy

Cortisol is a hormone released in response to stress. At high levels for too long, it becomes bad. So, what are ways to reduce cortisol levels? Being in an arena with a horse is one of those.

Janet Benjamin has a Doctorate in Sociology and has witnessed for 3 years the effects of therapy assisted by horses. She noticed that most of her patients struggle to open up to her which is not helpful for therapy.

Humans have the tendency to avoid dealing with their issues but being around the horses make that difficult.

For example, a horse will know you’re hiding something and will bite your foot if you do so. Such signs will encourage the patient to open up making the therapy even better and effective. Horses also have a calming effect. If a person has trauma and difficulty remembering memories then the horse’s presence will help with that.

Prison Inmates Train Service Dogs for Military Veterans

service dog training

Boots is just one of the few service dogs trained by the Jackie Brannon Correctional Center inmates. The program Paws for Patriots rescues dogs from shelters then pair them with inmates to be trained. The dogs, upon completion of training, graduate and get paired with veterans and individuals in need of service dogs.

Kevin Watson was an Army Veteran who struggled with PTSD and suicidal thoughts before he met Boots through the program. “Lots of times Boots can tell my mood before I even feel them myself, I’ve had times where she crawled up in my lap and didn’t really know why but it helped me to recover from where I was,” Watson said.

The JBCC inmate who trained Boots is Michael Hooten. He fed Boots for 8 weeks and brought her back to health after being a stray for 2 years and 6 months in the shelter.

Dog Gets Lost at a Bad Time in Colorado

tegan

Susan Chavez is a resident of Pueblo, Colorado. Tegan, her black-brown Chihuahua and Yorkie mix went missing one night. She remembered letting Tegan out overnight and forgetting to let her in. She thought that Tegan was in her crate all night, but when morning came, Tegan wasn’t.

Chavez searched all over the place for Tegan but there was no luck. To make matters worse, Community Animal Services of Pueblo gets closed after PAWS for Life relinquished its license to operate.

The animals and the operations of the closed shelter got relocated, making it harder to seek help in searching for Tegan.

Tegan’s owner suffers from a generalized anxiety disorder. But because of Tegan, she feels at ease despite Tegan not being an officially trained emotional support dog. “I think that maybe she’ll be there. I keep waiting for her to pop out.” Says Chavez.

University Apartment Will Allow Pets for Its Next Academic Year

ball state campus pets

At the Ball State University, apartment complexes will now allow pets to live with the students. Chris Wilkey, assistant director of University Apartments said, “We want people to live as they want to live.”

Such law of not allowing pets on campus residences have been around for a long time, although service and emotional support animals are allowed. However, Wilkey also saw the benefits of having other pets as emotional supports for students.

Katrina Brown, a Senior Sociology and English Literature Double Major, who happens to be a cat owner, considers this as good news. She would no longer have to come home feeling like a bad cat mom.

Students who wish to have pets with them will have to pay a 200-dollar pet deposit after approval and a $25 monthly pet fee per animal.
