Boy With Special Needs Gets a Service Dog of His Own

Michael’s Angel Paws, a nonprofit, has given Zee, a fourteen-year-old boy from Las Vegas with autism his own and new service dog. Epi, a two-year-old Border Collie, will be Zee’s new partner in life. Zee was able to get Epi through the partnership of Findlay’s Subaru and Michael’s Angel Paws where the car company paid for the dog’s training and certification.

“They have like a schedule every day to go out, to go walk around the neighborhood. You know that really helped him [Zee] release some anxiety,” says Binh Lee, Zee’s father. Zee received Epi last Sunday, June 27, 2021, and has already improved not only the boy’s but also his family’s life.

The 3 Benefits of Raising and Owning a Dog

woman scruff dog

It’s not a secret that most people who own dogs live happier lives. But how exactly does being a dog parent benefit one’s emotional and mental health? These are 3 reasons why you should get a dog for better living.

Decreases Anxiety – The presence of dogs helps people who are anxious feel relaxed. Even for those with chronic anxiety, a dog will keep its cool beside an anxious person to provide comfort until they’re able to collect themselves.

Lowers Stress – Aside from anxiety, dogs can also detect stress in humans. They smell increased levels of cortisol. Some dogs automatically go to handlers when they feel stressed and offer to be touched as a stress-reliever.

Reduces Loneliness – Leslie Sinn, DVM, DACVB, of Behavior Solutions, says “Dogs are social magnets. They can help anyone meet people, but they are especially helpful with people who have problems engaging with others.”

Houston Independent School District Police Department Hires Jamaica

bernedoodle

Jamaica is a Bernedoodle comfort dog. She is the newest addition to the Houston Independent School District Police Department’s (HISDPD) staff. Her job is to help students in the area foster a connection with the police officers.

Police Chief Pete Lopez of the HISDPD said, “This is one of my efforts to help bring us closer to the community. Students see the dog and not the police officer. It helps everyone feel at ease.” Jamaica is currently under training. She’s at the initial stages to be exact.

When she completes her training this fall, she will be renamed as a prize of a contest which will be participated by the students from the area.

4-Star Charity Rating Awarded to This Therapy Animal Organization

awarding

Pet Partners is an organization that registers therapy animals for animal-assisted interventions. They have been awarded recently by Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, with a 4-star rating for 2 years in a row.

Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator, said, “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds Pet Partners to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Pet Partners.”

This means that if you’re looking forward to donating money to help people receive therapy through the use of animals, Pet Partners is one of the organizations that will surely put your donation to good use.

Memorial Erected to Honor Pennsylvania’s Working Animals

animal statue

Rob Lauver asked Terri Heck of Summit Search and Rescue k-9 and current President of the Pennsylvania State Working Animal Foundation (PSWAF) to serve on a committee for creating a memorial in honor of Pennsylvania’s working dogs.

“A lot of people don’t know the wonderful things that dogs, some horses, some cats, and other animals do for us from a working perspective,” says Heck. Those living in Pennsylvania owning or have owned a service or working animal can have their companions honored on the memorial.

One of the project’s purposes is to raise awareness about the importance of animals and the roles they fulfill in various working settings. So that in the future, more people would know how to help working animals perform their jobs effectively if they were to see one in public.

Therapy Dog Saves Woman’s Life by Keeping Her From Jumping Off a Bridge

woman and dog

The moment a person considers ending their life, making them change their decision becomes a difficult responsibility for everyone else. That’s why when first responders of southwestern England were called, the negotiations didn’t go well, especially for the police.

Luckily, Digby the therapy dog came. “One of the fire crews had the idea to bring along Digby, our ‘defusing’ dog,” said the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS) in a Twitter post.

The woman who was standing over the guard railings of a bridge near Exeter saw Digby. In the same Twitter thread, the DSFRS added, “She was asked if she would like to come and meet Digby if she came back over the railings, which we are pleased to say she did.”

All in all, the day had a happy ending. Our best wishes go to the woman so that she may have a successful recovery.

Pets Can Help Keep Childrens’ Mental, Physical, and Emotional Health in Balance

family pet

Pets aren’t just guardians of our homes who drive away pests and alarm us for the presence of intruders. They can also keep our children healthy. A pet’s playful nature encourages kids to engage in physical activities. Their cuddly presence calms younglings during times of stress.

And last but not the least, a child who lives in a home with a pet has a low chance of feeling alone. But the best benefit of owning a pet is that showering one with affection will also return this love to you and your children multiple times over.

Even a study suggests that owning a pet helps your child develop good social skills. If your kids ask for a pet, these are a few good reasons to consider.

Plum steps out of his day job as a therapy dog of the New York Cancer Center to train and compete for the Westminster Dog Show. The competition will be held in Tarrytown. It’s the first time the show will be held outside of Manhattan.

The 3-year-old is also known as Argon’s Black Diamond – Plum’s kennel name. He goes to the cancer center once a week to provide comfort for the patients. However, this Sunday, he’s going to compete for the Best in Breed category.

“We met all of the qualifications of being a championship dog and they picked him from a lottery,” said MaryJane Koren, Plum’s owner.

Lila Joins the U.S. Capitol Police

black labrador

Lila is a two-year-old black Labrador. She will officially join the Capitol Police as the first emotional support animal of the agency on July 5. Her presence is highly needed for staff, officers, and members of the house of representatives who were traumatized by the riot.

In a tweet, the agency said, “We are thrilled to welcome the newest member of our Department!” Lila won’t be the only emotional support animal enlisted to the force as she cannot de-stress all members of the department.

According to the website of the U.S. Capitol police, they have 2,000 officers and more than 350 civilian employees under oath. More emotional support animals will join and they are still probably under training.

12 Dogs Receive Certificates After a Month of Behavior Training

graduating dog

Twelve teams graduate from the training of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) Sagip K9 unit. They are the first batch of graduates and each dog has their own origin story. Some were stray dogs. Others were roaming animals. A few were pets of the university residents and staff.

One of them was Kotton. He came to the College of Mass Communication dirty and ridden with mange and fleas. Professor Khrysta Imperial Rara took him to the veterinarian. When Kotton recovered, he became a resident where students of the college would pet him during in-person classes. The training of these dogs is credited to Professor Rara and Coach Lumbao.
