Missouri Wildlife Rescue Center Faces a Rise in Patients

wildlife rescue

The Wildlife Rescue Center of Ballwin saw a rising number of patients it saved last year. It was recorded that somewhere along 3,500 animals were treated by volunteers and a small pool of staff. Although the uptick isn’t that surprising, the numbers recorded in 2019 have a huge difference from the ones in 2020.

“Now kind of the working theory is [that] possibly because people were home more, they perhaps were in their yards and encountering animals,” executive director Kim Rutledge explained on Friday’s show. Since people are being more aware of wildlife rehabilitation, the number of these animal rescue cases could rise even higher in the following years.

The Difference Between Service Dogs and Therapy Animals

service dogs off duty

A therapy dog is not a service dog and does not have public access under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They are not trained to perform specific tasks aside from being present to comfort an owner or patient. When therapy and service dogs are near each other, the presence of a therapy dog can severely distract a service dog at work.

In the case of Emily Sullivan and her service dog, Damian, he failed to detect Emily having low blood sugar because a therapy dog approached both of them inside a Walmart and out on the parking lot. This caused Emily to fall on the ground endangering her life.

While this is a tragic case for people in genuine need of a service animal, it’s also a good wake-up call to those who are abusing the use of therapy animals. Not knowing the limitations of their therapy animal’s rights can endanger other people’s lives. As Emily said, “Service dogs, fake or otherwise, must be under your control.”

Dealing With Stress and Anxiety Through Pet Therapy

pet therapy

Healing people of their health issues through the use of animals is getting even more popular by the day. May it be recovery from the treatment of physical, emotional, mental, and social problems, pet therapy has proven to be beneficial for the patient, especially for those who suffer from stress and anxiety.

First, the animal is screened for vaccinations and disease to ensure the safety of the person who’ll avail of the therapy. Once everything is okay, the handler and the animal will then visit the patient with predefined objectives. Through multiple visits, the patient will slowly be integrated back into society as they heal from their issues.

Dogs Evolved to Communicate With People

Humans and dogs have been best friends since time immemorial. We have domesticated their lupine ancestors for companionship in hunting and at home. If we were to ask the question why such a thing is possible, we can answer with the same logic to how we’ve turned Aurochs into cows.

With plenty of millennia for breeding and training, dogs have evolved to understand, respond, and cooperate with humans automatically. Just like how we humans find our ability to learn, understand, memorize, and express languages, emotions, and gestures as innate, dogs are also able to communicate with people as part of their genetic heritage.

What Happens to Your Pet Now?

cat home alone

The pandemic has created a lot of new pet parents emptying shelters for companionship to get through the lockdowns. But now that most employees are vaccinated and everyone is getting used to the new normal, what happens to the adopted pets left at home?

These animals will find it hard to adjust from being with their humans all the time to become suddenly left at home alone. Pet experts advise both new and old pet owners to let their familiars get used to changing routines in advance.

One way is to start spending less time at home gradually before going back to work following a normal weekday schedule. This can help your pet avoid feeling a sudden separation anxiety that would negatively affect their health.

Study Explains Why Puppies Are Born to be Our Best Friends

puppy with man

A study was conducted by the University of Arizona researchers regarding specific genes of canines that are responsible for making puppies connect with humans. The goal is to identify which puppies are best suited to be service animals.

Evan MacLean, study co-author, an assistant professor of anthropology, and director of the Arizona Canine Cognition Center at the University of Arizona said, “We found that there’s definitely a strong genetic component, and they’re definitely doing it from the get-go.”

While the study will greatly benefit the training of service animals, it is still a long way from reaching completion. But when it does, service animal trainers will be able to find the best strategies to train puppies for service.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy as a New Dog Training Method

a dog on the run

Dogs don’t always behave at their best even with years of extensive training. There are times when they don’t follow your commands or do exactly the opposite of what you tell them to do. Not all types of training are effective to tame every kind of domestic canine. And certainly, a dog’s behavior problems don’t determine the best training method for them.

We all know what operant conditioning is and sometimes it doesn’t work. Cognitive behavior therapy is different and it works on dogs who cannot be trained through operant conditioning. In this discipline, we try to understand why dogs do things we don’t like despite being taught about these no-nos. It all boils down to a dog’s mindset and that is what cognitive behavior therapy targets to train a dog new tricks.

Therapy Dog Teams Eager to Return to Make Up for Lost Smiles

two poodles on a stroll

Gail Clark, a Yarmouth-based tester observer with about 12 years of therapy dog experience, said, “I think we all lost a year last year.” While this is true for all of us due to the pandemic, she meant that the therapy dog teams weren’t able to do their jobs properly due to health regulations that needed to be followed.

In the case of Annie, Clark’s French Bulldog, the pup was always so eager to enter facilities such as Maine Medical Center when they were in the vicinity. You could almost say that Annie is looking for her job as Clark suggests. We can only hope that this pandemic should end soon. Plenty of people including children and the elderly need the presence of therapy dogs for learning, happiness, and comfort.

A Book for the Benefits of Canine Companionship Among College Students

There is a growing mental health crisis among colleges and universities around the world. Most of it is attributed to the stress of studying and the loneliness students experience on a daily basis. Mary Renck Jalongo, Ph.D., a professor emerita from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, said, “Positive interactions between people and dogs tend to increase the feel-good hormone, oxytocin, and reduce the stress hormone, cortisol.”

She edited the book published by the Purdue University Press. The book is titled: “The Canine-Campus Connection: Roles for Dogs in the Lives of College Students”. In the book, readers will remove find various topics regarding the different assistance animal types, ethical issues of the presence of therapy dogs on campuses, and how to maintain a safe interaction with animals.
