Does Owning a Pet Help You Handle Psoriatic Arthritis?

active dog and owner

Those who live with psoriatic arthritis live a difficult life. Aside from the swollen body fingers and scaly skin patches, they also suffer from pain in the muscles and tendons. Owning a pet can provide many significant benefits to living with such a condition.

The flares of psoriatic arthritis are caused by stress. Being in the company of an animal that gives unconditional love can prevent this from happening. Pets also require their owners to be active – another way to loosen the joints and tendons of patients.

Lastly, living with psoriatic arthritis ruins one’s self-esteem. But with a pet around, a patient can get emotional support to never lose hope and fight against the disease.

dog and reading

There have been numerous studies done regarding the benefits of owning pets for humans. However, there are only a few when it comes to the advantages of having an Emotional Support Animal.

A new pilot study has been published. It has been titled: “Exploring Benefits of Emotional Support Animals (ESAs): A Longitudinal Pilot Study with Adults with Serious Mental Illness (SMI)”

Led by Janet Hoy-Gerlach, a social work professor who studies the animal-human bond, the study’s aim is to raise awareness regarding the effectiveness of ESAs for changing the lives of people with serious mental illnesses.

The study was completed in 2019. It’s the first of its kind to be published and reviewed by peers.

How Holistic Care Improves and Lengthens a Pet’s Life

pet bath There is a widespread misconception about what holistic care is. Some associate it with alternative health practices or medication. While these aforementioned disciplines are included, holistic care also involves giving pets the proper diet and providing a home a life that doesn’t cause them too much stress.

Some examples would be spending time to play with your pet, leaving them alone if they want to, taking them out for walks, giving them vitamins based on their age, incorporating probiotics into their diet, and regularly bathing them.

Pet ownership is one of the greatest blessings in life. We should treat them as if they are our own children and look for ways how we can show our love for them.

How to Care for Pets When a Pet Parent Tests Positive for COVID-19

pet hygiene

Are you a pet parent who tested positive for coronavirus and worried about how to care for your furry child while in isolation? Or do you know someone who faces the same problem? Here is one thing you can do or suggest:

Keep your pet away from the virus by not letting an infected individual touch or go near them. This can be done by putting the animal in a pet boarding facility or have someone else look out for them as you recover. In addition, don’t forget to leave food, hygiene necessities, and give specific care instructions for the person who will look after the pet.

Tears of Joy Shed After a Girl Received a Pug Puppy for Her Birthday

girl and pug

Sadie is a 7-year-old from New Mexico who always wanted a Pug ever since she received a book about them from her grandmother. That is why when she met the puppy weeks before her 8th birthday, she couldn’t contain her joy and had burst into tears.

Her mom noticed that Sadie asked for Pugs in the form of stuffed animals and had been searching for images about the dog breed on Google. On the day Sadie received the good boy, her mom asked her if she loved the Pug puppy and she said “Yeah.” while barely containing her tears and happiness.

Nonprofit Assists Wounded Veterans While Training Service Animals for Others in Need

dog train

To train a service dog takes time. But for Paws for Purple Hearts, they have found a way to speed up this process. The way they do this is that the trainer of Paws teaches the dogs commands and the trainer also teaches the veterans and active personnel how to issue out orders.

Because of this, the dogs are able to be familiar with the person they will serve. The veteran or active service member also eases up to their dog while they await discharge. If you’re interested in the Paws for Purple Hearts and the work they do, you can follow them on Instagram through @PPHSanAntonio, their webpage, or through their Facebook.

Animal Welfare Provides Free Vaccination Services at Community Wellness Event

pet vaccine

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) held its first Pets & People Community Wellness Event last May 15 at the Ruby Tucker Family Center. Almost 90 vaccinations were given to pets to fight distemper, rabies, and parvovirus – illnesses that could cause discomfort to death in household animals.

Aside from animal vaccinations, pets received grooming and nail trimming from Pawsh Dog Wash – a local business. Pet owners also received goods and services such as grocery bags and pantry items that are shelf-stable. For those that weren’t able to receive assistance, the AWLA plans to hold another event this year at the Chirilagua area of Alexandria.

You can email community@alexandriaanimals.org or visit their website for more info regarding their services and upcoming events.

Horses Can Help Children with Special Needs Learn

horse

Mia Sloan is an 11-year-old with down syndrome. Because of this, she has communication problems such as forming sentences or just speaking in general. But that changed when she enrolled in True Trails – an equine-assisted learning program that teaches literacy, numeracy, and horsemanship.

Clarissa leary, Mia’s mother, said, “Her confidence is next level compared to when we were trying to communicate. She would be getting quite angry and irritable because no-one could understand her.”

Animal-assisted therapy is a growing sector when it comes to education. Being in the presence of animals including horses does wonders in boosting a child’s confidence and focus. In the near future, it might be a normal part of classroom settings, especially in SPED classes to improve the lives of young learners.

Don’t Undervalue Diabetic Alert Dogs

cute diabetic alert dog

Most service dog jobs are trained through memorizing scent cues. In the case of a diabetic alert dog, they detect the changes of the scent in your saliva. When your blood glucose is high, your breath smells sweeter. When it’s low, you smell rubbery due to isoprene emissions.

For some diabetics, they rely on technology to get a proper and more accurate reading of their blood glucose levels. Sadly, technology isn’t always accurate. It’s even sadder that some dog trainers give a biased view on the reliability of diabetic alert dogs.

But diabetic alert dogs can really save plenty of lives. Especially those with type 1 diabetes. Because nothing works better than a medical device that’s born of nature and has been known to have a keen sense of smell since time immemorial.
