Startup Focuses on the Possibility to Train Bees in Detecting COVID-19

bee

Honeybees have a keen sense of smell. They can smell nectar in plants at a distance even if the amount is small. And scientists have used this sensitivity to detect and diagnose diseases. Through classical conditioning, honeybees can be trained to detect COVID-19 in humans.

A startup called InsectSense has partnered with a department at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands to focus on this endeavor. The bees in the experiments were given a sugar solution as a reward if they extended their tongues on a q-tip laced with COVID-19.

This could help medical and health authorities save plenty of time and money for testing people and animals. It’s because the bees can detect the virus quickly and training doesn’t cost much.

Police Officer’s Campaign Increases the Maximum Sentence for Injuring Service Animals

jail

Harming service animals is now punishable with a sentence of up to 5 years. This has been made possible by the Queen after giving Royal Assent to Police Constable Dave Wardell’s campaign. Wardell is a part of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Dog Unit.

“Our service animals are very much a part of our police family and deserve the recognition of this increased sentencing should anyone cause them harm,” said Jackie Sebire, Assistant Chief Constable in charge of the Joint Protective Services Command.

The Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill of England and Wales is also known as Finn’s Law Part 2. It is now in effect to protect the rights of all service animals including police canines.

Michigan City Balances Law for Dog-Friendly Recreation

npa

Residents of Marquette, Michigan, are surprised to be greeted with a sign saying, “NO DOGS PERMITTED IN PARK EXCEPT IN ENCLOSED VEHICLES,” as they walk along the sunny Lakeshore Boulevard. This is because there have been a lot of complaints about dogs being in off-limit areas like nature preserves and lifeguarded beaches.

Officer John Waldo, who serves as Marquette City Police Department’s K-9 handler, said, “We understand that people have really good control of their dogs. But if the dog has an interaction with another dog or wildlife, there’s no way to take any positive control. Your normally friendly, obedient dog can become less obedient and be in a potentially dangerous situation.”

The rule, however, doesn’t apply to ADA-approved service animals. To know more about the city ordinance for responsible dog ownership, click this link.

The Growing Popularity of Therapy Dogs in Schools

reading with dog

We know that dogs are the best type of service animals. They can be an extra hand for people with mobility problems, they can also make troubled people feel at ease during stressful situations. But therapy dogs can also be used in school settings. It has been done on a multitude of educational institutions and is seen to show promising results in terms of learning.

As Jodie Koranda, a teacher at Rock Creek Elementary School said, “Numerous studies have found that literacy skills can be improved from reading to dogs and that children gain confidence in reading and report an increased love of reading. Therapy dogs can also provide stability and comfort to children who are living in poverty or abusive homes.”

Taking the use of therapy dogs to the education mainstream could mean that learning quality will improve and school environments will be friendlier to learners of all ages.

Cat Detects His Owner’s Breast Cancer

cat snuggle

Kate King-Scribbins noticed her cat’s odd behavior when he always wanted to snuggle aggressively near her left breast. At first, it was just nothing as she directed oggy to someplace else. Months after noticing Oggy’s strange behavior, Kate woke up to a shooting pain all over her body. She then performed a self-checkup and discovered a lump.

It was discovered to be stage 3 breast cancer. “If only pets could talk,” said Scribbins. “I can’t help but wonder if I could have caught my cancer sooner had I noticed his behavior and listened to him,” she added. Fortunately, Kate immediately underwent several treatments. She also gives credit to Oggy, a cat she rescued 15 years ago, for detecting her cancer at its early stages.

Give Grandpa Charlie A Home

dog for adoption

Last Friday, April 30, 2021, was the National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day. But that doesn’t mean that it’s too late for you to help give an animal a good home. There are still plenty at shelters that need your help. Take Grandpa Charlie, a 10-year-old mix found roaming the streets of Toledo looking for food.

You won’t have any problems bringing him to your home because he is well-mannered, is good with cats, and knows how to sit when told. Cassie Bloomfield, the Community Outreach Coordinator for Lucas County Canine Care & Control, said, “He’s still pretty spry even though his name is Grandpa Charlie.”

Assistance Dog Graduates With Two Jobs Waiting

assistance dog

Morrissey was just a goofy puppy back in 2019. Picked out of his litter to be trained as a service dog for two years, Morrissey has matured to be a more competent and composed assistance animal. After thousands of hours of training, he is graduating and will be matched with Danielle Lambert, an Airforce National Guard member and local school clinician.

Instead of being paired to a single individual with service dog needs, Morrissey will work with Lambert in changing the lives of students with autism. For Morrissey’s National Guard duties, Lambert hopes that Morrissey can make members of the service open up to mental health support which is needed a lot.

Rescue Animals Visit Vacaville Seniors

chicken

Senior residents of Pacifica Senior Living were graced by the presence of rescue animals from the Funky Chicken Rescue and Zinger Ranch last Friday, April 23, 2021. Farm animals like goats, chickens, and ducks greeted the elderly from outside the home’s windows as they responded with smiles from the inside.

“Being around animals lowers blood pressure, and you can’t help but look at a chicken and laugh. That’s the kind of joy we’re trying to bring, give them a little break from the routine,” said Rosa Gracida, Pacifica’s sales director.

The elderly are among those that have been greatly affected negatively by the pandemic’s social-disconnection effects. Seeing animals have provided them immense joy even if they don’t get to hold the fuzzy critters.

Here’s How A Few Horse Owners In Britain Prepared For the Pandemic

woman and horse

As the world recovers from the unbalance caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is one thing that we all think about and agree on – be prepared for every type of disaster humanity could potentially face.

For some members of Britain’s equestrian community, they already had preparations in place. That includes stocking up animal food and creating care instructions in case owners are no longer able to visit their horses – particularly useful for those who are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 and in danger of being severely affected by the virus.

“Understanding the uptake of emergency planning and preparation in the UK equestrian community also warrants consideration. Using this information effectively to promote forward planning is likely to be of great benefit in equestrian responses to future health or climate-related crises,” said one of the team members surveying the UK horse owners.

Emergency Pet Pantry Has Its Supplies Running Low and Needs Donations

pet food

Humans are truly fortunate to have organizations to turn to like the Red Cross, food banks, or fire departments when times of crisis arrive. Sadly, there isn’t much help for animals and pets. That’s why Westmoreland/Fayette/Allegheny County Animal Response Team started a pet pantry to keep all animals fed that have been affected by the pandemic in the area.

But now, the pantry stocks are running low and they require supplies to keep the affected animals fed. On top of that, the number of animals in need is also growing. You can help by dropping pet food in donation boxes at Eastgate Plaza Giant Eagle, 5142 Route, Hempfield; Pet Market, 250 S. Third St., Youngwood; Abie & Bimbo’s Pizza, 1017 Highland Ave., South Greensburg; and Petagogy, 240 E. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg.

For those who are willing to give gift cards or checks for supplies, you can send them to the Pennsylvania State Animal Response Team, 8355 Route 819; Greensburg, PA 15601. You can also send your credit card donations through paanimalresponse.org.
