Man Saves Dog and Dog Saves Man

german shepherd and man

Four months after adopting a dog from a local rescue shelter, Brian Myers receives the love he gave to Sadie after he fell on the floor due to a stroke. He woke up to the sensation of something rough and wet on his face.

“She kept licking me and crying, so I reached my right hand up to pet her, then I grabbed her collar,” said Myers as he recalled the events. The 59-year-old man needed to call for help but his phone was on the dresser 15 meters away.

Luckily, Sadie dragged him to the dresser where he was able to reach his phone and call for help. What’s surprising is, Sadie was never trained to be an assistance dog. But what she did to save her owner’s life is truly a remarkable feat. Brian Myers says that adopting Sadie was the best decision ever made.

Feline Therapy Is Good for Anxiety

cute litter

Deb Wuethrich has been around felines since the 70’s. Aside from cats being around her, the companionship of felines has done a lot of good for her well-being. She and her daughter met their first cat C.C. (Calico Cat) after leaving their campus apartment since large pets weren’t allowed there.

After C.C., she met little Riley, Beans, Clancy, Lucy, and Charlie Brown. But like her daughter who passed, so did all the cats she met. So she told her husband, Gordy, she thought not to have any more cats. But on one fateful day, she saw a beautiful picture of a can in a newspaper and thought to donate all the unexpired and unopened cat food left to the SPCA.

During her visit to the SPCA, she felt relieved and relaxed after a very long time. Right now, Deb is still on a break from taking in cats but also came home with adoption applications. And she’ll probably go back for more “Kitty Therapy” when her heart is ready and the time is right.

Battling for the Right to Have the First Downhill Skiing Service Animal

dog ski

Claire Barnett is a cum laude from Vanderbilt’s Peabody School, with a Bachelor of Science in Human and Organizational Development. She lives an extraordinary life and doesn’t let her autism and ADHD stop her from achieving her dreams or doing what she wants.

Barnett has been skiing since she was 3 years old. When she had the opportunity to ski again after contracting COVID-19 and recovering from it, she took it. The problem was, her service dog, Maeve, wasn’t allowed to ski with her.

“But when the ski patrol officers flagged me down, they insisted that no matter what the ADA says, service animals are not allowed on the slopes,” said Barnett. Luckily, Maeve was allowed to ski with Claire due to her persistence.

Founder of a Japanese Veterinary Team Advocates Pet Owners to Prepare for Disasters

dogs enjoying outdoors

63-year-old Veterinarian Toshihiro Funatsu advises pet owners to make their pets be familiar with people other than themselves. Another important point to follow is to make the pets get accustomed to traveling and other places other than the owner’s home.

This is to reduce the chances of pets feeling separation anxiety or other forms of stress in case a disaster strikes that could potentially cause a displacement. Funatsu said, “A pet will like a carrier if by putting food inside you make it think that it’s a place where they get to eat.”

This message is brought as a reminder of the Great East Japan Earthquake that destroyed the city of Yukihashi in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Stray Dogs Causing Problems in Guam

pups

Guam already has had its stray animal problems for decades. But this time, it only has gone from bad to worse. Part of the growing problem was people were freeing the animals from traps that have been set under the orders of the mayor.

Local officials have estimated that 25,000 to 60,000 stray dogs and cats are roaming village streets. People are concerned as to what happens to the animals that have been trapped. It’s probably the reason why they’re releasing the animals.

Funding could soon be made available to address the growing stray animal issue which poses risks to children going to school and going back to their homes.

This Wellness Center Lets You Cuddle With Therapy Cows

ranch

As the popularity of therapy animals grows, so does the number of animal types used for emotional therapy. Some even have registered peacocks, monkeys, sloths, horned lizards, turtles, and snakes as their emotional support animals.

In the case of India’s Cow Cuddling Center, they let you hug cows as a way to improve human health. However, India is not the first and only cow cuddling center in the world despite the country’s roots in Hinduism – where they believe cows are sacred.

The Dutch were the first to introduce the concept of cow cuddling, “Koe knuffelen” in the native tongue. The United States also has its own cow cuddling centers.

ElderDogs Arrive at the Tournament Capital Centre

Not every non-profit organization aims to shelter animals in need. A group like ElderDog has the mission of helping seniors in the Kamloops community. The assistance they provide ranges from walking the animals, taking the pets to veterinarian appointments, or re-housing the pets when the owner can no longer care for them. They’ll do anything petcare-related as long as it helps an elderly person live an easier life.

“If you are a senior dog owner who requires assistance in caring for your companion, or if you are interested in volunteering to assist in its work, you can find out more information at www.elderdog.ca, or by calling 1-855-336-4226,” advises Tianna Smidt, the Pawd leader for the Thompson Okanagan ElderDog group.

Lost Your Animals During the Winter Storm? Get Help Here!

thick snow

Relief is ready for Oklahoma City residents who have lost their animals due to the Winter Storm Uri. However, the deadlines are approaching.

Amy Hagerman, an agriculture policy specialist with Oklahoma State University said, “The first program is the Livestock Indemnity Program. This is going to pay for animals that are in excess of normal mortality.”

She also added, “Any losses in hay, forage, feed, and that’s going to be in the, what we call the ELAP Program. Again, that notice of loss, it’s a shorter window for that notice of loss, that’s only 15 days.”

There are a lot of farmers who will need assistance and the help available might not be available for all. This means you shouldn’t wait to avail assistance. It’s highly recommended to contact your local Farm Service Agency within 15 to 30 days of an incident such as a winter storm. Upon contacting the agency, you must provide supporting documentation as well.
