Caring for Your Pet When You’re Not Around

derp dog being fed

As pet lovers, we appreciate the companionship our pets provide us in our lives. That’s why we return the favor by giving them a safe cozy home, cleaning them, and feeding them highly nutritious meals.

When we’re away, we also hire someone else to look after our pets. But not all of us consider what happens to our beloved furry friend when we pass out of schedule. To start, you must consider who you would like to look after your pet when you’re gone.

It’s best to talk to that chosen person first because they may not want the responsibility of adopting your pet. It’s also good to name a substitute beneficiary if the primary person in your will can no longer take care of your pet when you’re long gone.

Then, leave money for the upkeep of your pet to minimize the responsibilities of your beneficiary. If you cannot find someone to take care of your pet, you can choose a specialist charity to be written in your will.

Meet Boston, an Upcoming Assistance Dog

black lab on training

Boston is the new recruit of the Anything is Pawsable program after Erin Chrisman posted on Facebook putting her other puppies for adoption. This program trains puppies to be assistance dogs. Upon completion of training, the dogs are then to be donated to families in the surrounding community for free.

When Sandy Gerdeman, the founder and the leader of the program and owner of the doggy daycare saw the 8-week-old Black Labradoodle, she thought that he would be perfect for the Anything is Pawsable program. This is because the program takes in donated litters to produce assistance dogs.

Those who are interested to donate for the needs of the dogs in the program, have puppies for donation, or are in need of an assistance animal in Auglaize county, visit https://k9to5doggydaycare.com or call 419-300-K925.

California Shelter Reintroduces Volunteer Program After Facing Challenges

volunteers petting dog

The Santa Monica Animal Shelter (SMAS) relaunches its volunteer program after experiencing a shortage of staff and budget cuts due to the pandemic. The city removed the animal control officers and kennel attendant positions when it faced financial difficulties due to the lockdowns.

“The more enrichment and attention animals get the more likely they are to be adopted,” said Carmen Molinari, chair of the Santa Monica Animal Shelter Foundation and a ten-year volunteer.

This is true because without volunteers to train the sheltered animals, the animals are less desirable for adopters as their unruly behavior could damage house objects. The SMAS is looking for volunteers to help with taking care of the sheltered animals.

Are you interested in signing up? You can call the shelter during their business hours at 310-458-8595. Just ask for Martin Hernandez. He’s the one who coordinates the program.

An Award Equal to the OBE is Given to a Dog Who Provided Virtual Therapy

english spaniel

Max the English Springer Spaniel has been awarded the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) Order of Merit after providing virtual therapy to thousands of people during the pandemic. The honor is said to be equal to the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) award.

PDSA director general Jan McLoughlin said, “He has become a true ambassador for the positive impact that animals have on mental health and wellbeing, which is more important now than ever.” Max is also the first animal to receive the award.

One of Max’s highlights of heroism was giving his owner a reason to live after experiencing a disabling road accident and severe depression.

Reminder: Keep Your Pets Inside Your Homes

dogs playing on snow

Even if our pets have thick fur, they can still feel the cold and get frostbitten, especially with snow still falling. For a while, they seem to be okay outside playing. But prolonged exposure to the cold can pose serious risks to their health.

You can let them out but they shouldn’t be out for more than 30 minutes. Not when the outside temperature is lower than 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Potty breaks are also advised to be kept short.

Those who leave their pets out in the cold for more than 30 minutes could face a $15,000 fine and 7 years in prison. That’s why it’s important to keep your pets inside your home. The best way to keep them happy is by providing them warmth and love during this cold season.

Meet Elma and Pascal the Rescue Dove

beautiful white dove

Elma Ling Hoffman is in her senior year as an art history and religious studies major. She met Pascal after a friend took her to the Center for Animal Rehabilitation and Education (CARE) in Waukesha, Wisconsin to get a dove for her birthday.

She got the idea of adopting a dove after seeing the four parakeets in the home of the kids where she tutors violin and foreign languages. Elma said, “When we play together, the parakeets sing along. So I was like, I’m a musician, I need a bird to accompany me.”

Not everyone prefers to have dogs or cats as household pets. Some prefer to be in the company of birds. If you’re one of these people and want to adopt one, you can visit the CARE website to see which birds are available for adoption.

Animal Shelter Teams Up With L.A. Chargers to Get Pets Adopted

cat adopt

It all started when a Chargers representative reached out about seeing how they could help Louis – a dog whose eyes were removed due to an eye infection. Louis also was hit by a car last January 2020 and was taken into the Helen Woodward Animal Center in December of the same year.

The Chargers then raised awareness for Louis’ adoption by sharing his story on all their social media accounts. That led to the partnership of the Chargers and the animals center. Now, the Chargers are appealing to the general public to adopt 12 of the pets at Helen Woodward.

Adoption fees and a Lazy Dog Pepper’s Pack will be covered and provided by both the NFL team and the Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar for the first five families that will adopt these pets. Those who are interested in adopting must first request an appointment at animalcenter.org.

Focus on Your Pet’s Oral Health This February

dog and brush

February is Pet Dental Health Month. It’s a reminder that our pets cannot brush their teeth and don’t carry toothbrushes with them wherever they go. It’s also our responsibility to do it for them at least twice a day.

Not taking care of your furry friend’s dental health puts them at risk of oral problems. Yellow teeth, stinky breath, or red gums are just some of them. 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will develop some form of oral disease by the age of three. That’s according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).

Here are the steps you follow to prevent pet oral problems: First, take your furry friend to the veterinarian for an examination and advice. Then, make sure your pet eats a clean and balanced diet.

Can Do Canines is a Minnesota-based non-profit. They have been making the quality of life for people with disabilities better for over a few years now since its inception in 1989. Among those they have helped is Bella Andrade, a senior in high school.

She was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy before her preschool years. “I relied a lot on my parents and my brother, who is amazing,” Bella said. But ever since Blaine, a service dog sent by Can Do Canines came, life has been very different for her.

Now, she feels confident and enabled to pursue her dreams. You can help Can Do Canines and people like Bella achieve more of their aspirations by taking part in the non-profit’s Can Do Canines Fetching Ball. It will be held on the 20th of February.
