Cat Reunites with Her Owner’s Partner

cat and man

Last month, Patches the cat was brought to the Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) in Santa Barbara County, California. She was scanned for a microchip implant and was discovered to be owned by Josie Gower – one of the victims of the Santa Barbara mudslide that claimed the lives of 23 people back in January 2018.

Because of the microchip implant, ASAP was able to trace Patches’ family and got her reunited with Josie’s partner, Norm. While it’s good to put a collar on your pet to signify that it’s not a stray, collars can be lost. Talk to your veterinarian about availing of a microchip implant for your pet. It’s one way to help shelters contact you in case your furry family member gets lost.

New York-Based Dog Training Facility Pairs Its First Trained Shelter Dog with Veteran First Responder

dog and woman

Nicole Panetta is a former EMT and firefighter of Cohoes who was struggling with depression and anxiety. Her doctor suggested getting a service animal but she was also facing financial hurdles. As Nicole researched, insurance companies do not pay for service animals and these service dogs cost from $25,000 to $45,000 making her feel hopeless.

But when she heard about Operation at Ease (OAE) last year, she applied for the program and got paired with Oakley, a shelter dog from Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. Panetta is currently recovering from substance addiction. She said, “Being in recovery is a struggle every day and he’s [Oakley] helped me with that. I haven’t even thought about using a drug or drink. It’s amazing.”

OAE is an organization that provides service animal training for shelter dogs and pairs them with veterans in need. Nicole is one of the first responders to receive a service animal when they expanded their program. The organization now needs more funding for the program expansion. If you’re interested to donate or require more information about OAE and their program, you can visit operationatease.org.

Tenant Evictions Caused by the Pandemic Put Pets at Risk

sad cat

Ms. Esther Deshommes is a 36-year-old tutor who lost her job along with her husband who is a barber during the early days of the pandemic. Due to the pandemic, their savings dried up. This caused them to move last June across the country from Rockland County, N.Y., to St. Louis.

The problem is, Ms. Deshommes’ stepfather is allergic to their two tabby cats named Nova and Luna Bear. Their story is just one of those who struggle to keep their pets with them due to the pandemic.

Julie Castle, chief executive of Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare organization, said, “If you have 30 or 40 million Americans at risk of losing their homes, well, do the math. We could be staring down a really bad situation with people being forced to choose between their home and their pet.”

If you are a landlord with a no-pet policy on your property, please give consideration to prospective tenants even just for a while until the pandemic is over.

Military Veteran Shares How Her Service Dog Saved Her Life

woman and dog

It’s not easy for some veterans to cope with life after serving. For Mac McQueary, she faced this same problem for years since her return after serving for more than three years overseas. She said, “When you’re in the military, you always had a battle buddy. And when you got out, you didn’t have a battle buddy. And [Mary’s] my battle buddy now and it’s comforting to know that no matter what, she’s always there and I’m always there for her.”

Mac and Mary were partnered through K9s for Warriors after she was put in contact with the group. K9s for Warriors doesn’t breed and train service dogs. Instead, they rescue dogs from kill shelters and train the dogs to be service animals for veterans at no cost.

Do you know a veteran who struggles with life after service? You can introduce them to K9s for Warriors for a companionship that they surely need.

Nashville Humane Association Shares Their Recent Struggles

kennel

The Nashville Humane Association is getting busier each day as more dogs fill their kennels. “We can not keep up with the demand which is crazy to think about but sometimes we don’t have enough animals for how many adopters we have,” said NHA Executive Director Laura Charvarria.

Aside from that, some people with pets who are losing their homes add to the rise of dogs being surrendered to the humane. However, the humane has their own safety net program that aids struggling people in keeping their pets at home by providing landlord assistance and pet food.

If you are interested in giving a new home to the animals in the Nashville Humane Association, you can visit their website by clicking here.

North Dakota Bill Aims to Clarify the Title of Mini-Horses as Service Animals in their State

mini horse

The current Americans with Disabilities Act define service animals as dogs trained to work and provide assistance for individuals with disabilities. Mini horses are also included in the list of service animals.

But there is a confusion in North Dakota on whether a miniature horse is allowed to enter private and public premises. If House Bill 1230 gets successfully passed, miniature horses in North Dakota will be clearly defined and added to the list of the federal regulation as service animals permitted to enter establishments.

Jenny BrodKorb, Executive Director of Service Dogs for America in Jud, N.D., wrote in a testimony saying, “Having North Dakota Century Code align with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) removes confusion as to which animals specifically can be considered for service animal work.”

Two Dogs Traumatized by House Fire are Now Recovering Well

girl and dog

Bella and Daisy are two dogs both owned by Silvia, 8, and her sister Nadia Hernandez, 6. The two sisters were safe along with their grandmother, Maria Barraza of Hastings but both dogs were trapped in the basement and suffered from smoke inhalation as the home burned down.

Thankfully, Bella and Daisy were rescued due to the efforts of the neighbors telling the firefighters about the dogs trapped inside and the firefighters’ brave and quick response. If the dogs didn’t survive, we would have all been crushed” said Barraza.

The dogs are now recovering and are improving every day. However, they still need medications for a full recovery. “I’m happy to see them,” Silvia, the older sister of Nadia said.

dog in clinic

The Charlottesville-Albemarle Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CASPCA) is going to increase the number of clinics they hold this year. Angie Gunter, the CASPCA CEO, said, “Last year brought struggles to many families. We hope that by offering low-cost health care for pets more frequently, we will be able to provide support for pet owners in our community. Our goal, as always, is to keep healthy pets in loving homes.”

Microchip and Rabies Clinics will be held on the first and third Sundays of every month while the Compassionate Care Clinics will take place on the second and fourth Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This is to help more pet owners access low-cost care for their animals. To avail of the services of these clinics, people need to show proof of the need for public assistance such as disability, Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, or unemployment.

These clinics are all by appointment only. People need to send an email to clinic@caspca.org or call (434) 973-5959, ext. 206 for an appointment. If you need more information on the Microchip and Rabies Clinics, click here. For more information on the Compassionate Care Clinics, click here.

Tips on Locating Your Lost Cat

lost cat poster

Start looking for the cat where it was lost or last seen. Check the back alley of the neighborhood, garbage cans, treetops, your neighbors’ area, or abandoned buildings near your residence. Don’t hesitate to check back even if you’ve gone far looking for your cat.

Spread the news on social media. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are good platforms to quickly let people around know that there is a cat missing. Post clear photos of your lost pet and the details on how to contact you in case they find the cat. Then, ask your friends and family members to share your post to let other people know.

Print and post flyers. Since your neighbors already know that your cat is missing, ask permission if you can post your flyers on their fence and trees. Ask permission from local restaurants and stores as well to post your lost pet’s flyer on their window.

When searching for your lost cat, look around during quiet times and in quiet areas. Your cat would usually come out of hiding early in the morning or late in the evening when the surroundings are calmer without bustling cars and people.
