Most of Estes Park is now given mandatory evacuation orders due to the recent wildfires. Almost all of the evacuees have also made it down safely down the valley. For those with pets in need of assistance, you can go to the Embassy Suites, at 4705 Clydesdale Pkwy, Loveland, CO 80538. The Red Cross Resource Center for the Fort Collins and Loveland area are located there.

If you have large animals with you, kindly go to The Ranch at Budweiser Events Center at 5280 Arena Circle, Loveland, CO 80538. These places will be open from 7 am to 7 pm daily until the evacuations are over.

Why Pet Owners Put Their Pet’s Health First Before Their Own

pexels-burst-545016

Back in 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 10 which led to 1,800 deaths and $125 billion worth of damage. Ray Nagin who was the mayor of that time, issued a mandatory evacuation order where somewhere between 150,000 to 200,000 people didn’t follow. 19% of these people who didn’t flee had one reason – they didn’t want to leave their pets behind.

Fast forward today, a time when the pandemic is at its rise, what would be the reason for pet owners to avoid and delay testing or hospitalization? There would be four: lack of their pet’s accommodation, lack of pet care in their absence, not wanting to be separated, and not wanting to bother other people for pet care.

The Petco Foundation released an $825,000 investment to top veterinary oncology universities in the United States. This is to help pet parents cover the cost of cancer treatments their pets face.

Susanne Kogut, president of the Petco Foundation said, “Pet cancer is the #1 disease-related killer of dogs and cats, and a devastating diagnosis for pet parents who cannot afford treatment for their pets. With all the strides being made in the veterinary oncology field increasing treatment options for our pets, our goal is to make these lifesaving treatments available to more pets and their pet parents.”

Since 1999, the organization has invested more than $280,000,000 for animal lifesaving and will continue to do so.

Disney’s Policy on Emotional Support Animals

pexels-craig-adderley-3411134

Guests of all needs are welcome Orlando in theme parks including Disney. This makes them highly regarded due to their commitment to accessibility. Service animals can enter without question. But there is a difference when it comes to Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) because the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) doesn’t consider them as “Service Animals”.

According to Disney, an ESA can enter depending on the tasks it’s trained to do. For example, if the ESA is trained to calm down its owner when they suffer a panic attack, then the animal is welcome to enter the theme park. However, Disney requires the owner to put the animal in a leash or a harness at all times.

The Dark Side of Pet Adoption During the Pandemic

pexels-robert-bogdan-663573

When the pandemic struck, a wave of panic-buyers caused a shortage of toilet paper, hand sanitizers, and puppies. You read that right. The demand and adoption application for dogs was high. While that may be good news because a lot of dogs deserve proper care rather than being in rescue shelters, this high demand for dogs isn’t beneficial.

The 400% rise in adoption application in the United States was only for designer dogs and pedigreed canines which leaves the others in shelters without families. MaryPat Thate, a New Hampshire breeder of Australian Labradoodles said, “I am sold out for the next nine months.”

What’s more alarming is, shelters are bracing for the lockdown dog bubble to pop. This is because once everything goes back to normal, everyone will be disinterested in the dogs causing an influx in rescue shelters.

Respecting Assistance Dogs: The Right Way

service-dog-1633976_1920

Our canine companions are gifts from a mighty authority. Most of the time, they live with us in our homes guarding our properties. Other dogs work with the government and private entities to help find missing people, sniff out illegal objects, or track criminals and terrorists.

But there is one category of heroic canines that deserve as much respect – assistance dogs. There are two categories of assistance dogs. The first is a service dog which helps the physically impaired such as the blind for navigation and those with mobility problems.

The second are therapy dogs who provide comfort to those who are facing mental distress such as post-traumatic stress disorders, anxiety, and depression. If you ever come across one assistance animal at work, show appreciation by not distracting the pooch from their duty.

Veteran’s Pet Care Program Needs Your Help!

marina-hanna-ZzEgfT9Fxn4-unsplash

Help Vets Pets is a program by Friends of Valley Brook in Bernards Township, New Jersey. The program’s mission was to provide food and veterinary care for the pets of veterans living at the Valley Brook Village on the grounds of the VA Hospital in Lyons. Before, the program was funded by donation jars located at participating pet stores and veterinary offices.

With the money received from donations, founder Steve Hackenberg was able to purchase nutritious pet food, treats, new leashes, collars, flea and tick prevention shampoo for the companion, service, and therapy animals at Valley Brook.

Now, they need monetary donations to cover the costs of emergency veterinary costs from the past few weeks. If you want to help, you can call Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital at 908-464-0023 and reference the Help Vets Pets Program to make a credit card donation.

Meet Officer Nubbin, Fullerton PD’s New Cuddly K-9

K-9 Officer Nubbin is just 3 years old. Yet, he holds some of the most important work a dog could have. He joined Fullerton’s Police Department last November 2019 according to Kristy Wells, the Community Liaison Officer and Facility Dog Handler.

Bred by the owners of Canine Companions for Independence and raised for 22 months in a volunteer raiser program, Nubbin entered “doggy college” to train for nine months. While training, he was taught to tug, turn lights on and off, and strengthen other basic commands.

Kristy Wells said, “Once she becomes of retirement age, I get first dibs, if you want to call it, to keep her.”

Animal Video Resources to Help for Improving Your Health

If you’re wondering why watching videos of cute animals is so addictive, this is because such activity can reduce your anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate. This is according to a study conducted by the University of Leeds in Britain, Singapore Airlines, and Western Australia’s tourism agency.

Dacher Keltner, a psychology professor at the University of California, Berkeley said, “We derive a lot of health and happiness from our relationship to the natural world.” So it doesn’t matter if you’re watching a domesticated animal or not, it all gives the same effect to us humans – happiness.
