Good Dog! Autism Companions has changed their business name into Good Dog! Service Canines. This is because the Fallbrook-based canine service is now aiming to serve more than just families and children with Autism.

Last August 14, 2020, four families received newly graduated dogs along with the rebranding announcement. The dogs are the first to don the rebranded name and vest of the canine service. Even with the pandemic going on, the graduation still continued via Zoom.

The event was attended virtually by donors, volunteers, friends, and families of both the service organization and the receiving families. Ever since the organization was founded in 2011, Good Dog! has provided families all over the United States with 55 service dogs.

Last August 5, 2020, Darren Chester, the Minister to the Department of Veterans Affairs announced the increase of psychiatric assistance dogs for veterans. The program started last 2019 and is called the Government’s Psychiatric Assistance Dog Program.

Its aim was to help veterans in handling their PTSD and other traumas. Two organizations led to the increase of service dog availability, the Royal Society for the Blind of South Australia, and Integra Service Dogs Australia.

As Darren Chester said, “We have seen the positive outcomes from this program with veterans already sharing a special bond with their psychiatric assistance dogs, making a remarkable difference to their everyday life. These dogs are specially trained to perform specific tasks to help their owner when experiencing symptoms of PTSD, such as a night terror, and helping veterans to reach their clinical recovery goals.”

Three weeks ago Paula Andropoulos went to a pet shop in Norwood, Johannesburg. She was determined to look for a cure on something that ailed her – lockdown fatigue without a direction. The cure that she was looking for wasn’t a drug or something that adults would normally use.

It was a hamster. A ball of fur with fat cheeks and a huge appetite. It was something she could focus on and indulge in without the risk of being hurt. Or “Something I could look after without incurring enormous expense, or irrevocably altering the conveniently plastic quality of my existence,” as she said.

She is going back to her usual self. The trip to the pet shop and the hamster she got is her proof.

When Buddy the Cockapoo cut his paw after he trod on glass, his owner, Becky Baker, had an idea to prevent such an unfortunate thing from happening again. She started K9Nation, a dog-friendly and networking platform.

The aim of the platform was to promote tidying up of public areas by inviting dog owners to join the K9CleanUp movement. A fundraising event is also part of the plan. Those who join the movement are shared with K9CleanUp kits through the K9Nation site.

“We wanted to give dog owners the chance to take part in something that can really make a difference to the surroundings where we live, as well as helping dogs,” Said Becky.

Fibromyalgia is no joke. A patient who suffers from it experiences widespread musculoskeletal pain. To make things worse, the painful sensation is amplified as the condition affects the brain on pain processing signals.

But, therapy dogs can ease this pain. For patients enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Fibromyalgia Treatment Program, this was put to the test. 221 patients were observed. Half of the patients were given 20 minutes to interact with a therapy dog.

The results showed that patients with dogs became more relaxed. They also showed an increase of salivary oxytocin – the cuddle or love hormone. 80% of the treated patients agreed and strongly agreed that the presence of therapy dogs helped them.

Those who are immunocompromised, staying at home, or elderly at Branford can now avail of the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter’s pet food delivery service. All they need is to call 203-315-4125, message the shelter on Facebook, or email them at lburban@branford-ct.gov for deliveries.

There are also other places where people who can go out yet cannot afford to buy pet food can pick up a free bag. These places are the Branford Food Pantry, Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, and Harbor Health.

The shelter mainly focuses on delivering for residents of Branford and North Branford. You don’t need to worry if you live outside these areas, they will find a way to help you out.

Just before the midday of August 1, 2020, Max was called into duty by the Dyfed-Powys Police. The two-year-old mixed German Shepherd’s first assignment is to track down a lost mother and child.

The mother, along with her one-year-old child went to spend a night in a remote location at Powys, Wales. Inspector Jonathan Rees-Jones said, “The woman had not been seen or spoken to for two days, which was out of character, and her phone wasn’t working, so naturally concern for her safety was high”

The search ended at 1:30 pm after both PC Peter Lloyd, Max’s handler, and Max spotted the missing woman through scent. She was waving for help near a steep ravine on a mountainside. The baby and mother were found safe but the baby was cold. They were checked out by the paramedics and made a complete recovery.

A social media content company called Fullscreen, surveyed individuals aged 18-37. 62% of the participants shared that the pandemic has caused them stress by disrupting their daily routines. Human doctors are professionals but even for healthy people like us, every time we visit the clinic, there’s always this sense of worry we have. The doctor dogs from Taiwan, however, are different. Bed-ridden patients have claimed to have their mood improved just by being graced by the presence of a therapy dog. And, every session with a doctor dog is something they look forward to.

The program called Formosa Animal-Assisted Activity and Therapy Association has trained over 500 doctor dogs for more than two decades. Its goal is to provide animal-assisted therapies for children and elders who are receiving rehabilitative treatment.

The association’s chairman, Collier Chang (張泮崇), said, “Concerned with the rising number of abandoned dogs in Taiwan, Shirley Chen (陳秀宜), the founder of the association, also included stray dogs in her training program, giving the animals a second chance to foster a close relationship with humans.”
