Dog Continues His Owner’s Legacy by Providing Support to Dispatchers

At Phoenix, Arizona, Milo Glasser keeps the mood brightened as 911 operators answer to stressful calls. Trained by THE FETCH FOUNDATION to be a support dog, Milo was once a rescue dog from Officer David Glasser’s family. When Officer Glasser was K.I.A. back in 2016, Milo joined the family of Myla Marovich – the Communications Bureau Manager of the Phoenix Police Department.

Julie Brewer, the Therapy and Service Dog Trainer at the FETCH FOUNDATION also said, “When they’re working a long shift and taking a lot of difficult calls, just having a dog there they can hug or pet can relieve that stress and anxiety.” The late officer’s legacy is shared as his serial number is on Milo’s vest. Above the serial number is the line “Love you,” – the phrase that Officer Glasser always said to his coworkers on a daily basis.

Grant Refusal Puts U.K. Animal Haven Owner in a Pinch

rabbit at the garden

AniMel Haven’s founder Melanie James is in desperate need of help as her two grant applications have been refused. The grant was supposed to be used to build a home for wounded and abandoned animals.

The animals are currently living in her father’s greenhouse. Because she won’t turn down animals in need, the plant nursery is running out of space. Due to the lockdown, the situation has gone from bad to worse. “I feed and look after the birds and animals here by selling bric-a-brac and from donations from visitors to my dad’s business, Bank Mill Nurseries. Obviously it has been closed so that source of revenue has run out,” said James. For those interested to help, visit AnimMel Haven’s or Bank Mill Nurseries’ Facebook page for more inquiries.

Brooke Baran had a dream of opening a water therapy business for canines. But when the COVID-19 pandemic happened, all contractors and construction activities were put on hold. Baran didn’t want the pandemic to delay her from achieving her business dream. She waited, planned, painted on her establishment, and waited even more.

Eventually, she involved her friends and family to finish the work the contractors couldn’t. Now, she’s two weeks away from opening Brooke’s Barks and Recreation. Baran said, “As a dog lover and lifetime pet owner, I understand the powerful bond between an owner and their furry friend.” Baran is an experienced woman as she worked with service dogs before. She also helped in training therapy dogs.

Robot Pets Improve the Quarantine Lives of English Nursing Home Residents

robot dog

Ever since Hythe View Nursing Home limited its visitations last March, they’ve noticed that the residents had missed the interaction with their furry friends. To remedy the situation and give the elders a comforting companion, the nursing home staff invested in two robopets.

The robodog was named Bonzo and the robocat was named Simba. Both were named by the elderly residents. These robopets are able to respond to the resident’s interactions. They also have a similar look and behavior of real cats and dogs!

“Residents who routinely engage with them have become less agitated, their mood has improved, and it’s reduced their reliance on calming medication,” Heather Heath, the Activities Coordinator said.

College Friends Sell the Solution to Their Own Pet Parent Problem

guys developing apps

Swapnil Shah and Udit Chugh were just your normal college friends until they faced a problem – Where to find a boarding space for their furball because they need to travel. Eventually, they did find a safe and trusted space for their dog. But, they realized that the industry of pet boarding lacked technological innovation.

That’s the moment where they decided to create Pawfect.xyz – a platform that helps pet parents can book grooming sessions for their pets, find a temporary stay, find a trainer, and many other pet-related services.

“Using our app is relatively simple. We give the flexibility of time to the user so that they can choose the service, a time slot, share details of their pet, and pay. And, our service partner will fulfill the service at the time of their choice,” said Chugh.

A Sniff Back in Time: Cadaver Dogs to Archeological Dogs

dog tracking

Croatia’s Velebit Mountain Range is an arid area perfect for archeological digs. But, when a fierce wind known as “Bora” comes, the steep terrain can freeze at midday. This phenomenon makes it hard for archeologists like Vedrana Glavaš to dig and track prehistoric remains.

Glavaš, from the Croatian University of Zadar, along with her team was working on the Velebit Mountain when they discovered areas of a 3,000-year-old fort and necropolis. This is where Glavaš teamed up with Andrea Pintar, a dog trainer. Pintar’s services were essential to the dig because she and her company Canine Caffe has been training dogs to sniff out cadavers.

“We both wondered how far back in time her dogs could smell,” said Glavaš.

Help U.S. Soldier Bring His Two Dogs From Overseas

dog soldier

Chief Warrant Officer Anderson has served his country overseas for years now. Soon, he is scheduled to head back home in America. But, the thought of leaving his two dogs Moose and Sergeant Mimi Morale behind weighs heavy in him. He rescued the two dogs from starvation and maltreatment. Since then, the two dogs have lived with him in his tent at the camp.

“I love these dogs like family, and I can’t walk away and leave family behind over here. I will forever be grateful to be able to take them back to the U.S. so they can continue being a part of my family,” said Anderson. Bringing the dogs back home would cost somewhere around $9,000. To ease the costs, Officer Anderson has reached out to Guardians of Rescue for help, a New York-based organization. To donate and support the cause of bringing the two dogs with Anderson home, visit the Guardians of Rescue donation site.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Outlaws Additional Fees For Renters With ESAs

animal in apartment

Landlords are no longer able to charge additional fees to tenants who are in need of emotional support animals (ESAs). As the fourth month of the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the need for ESAs to fight pandemic blues is much higher. Emotional Support Animals in this situation no longer require a certificate of training or formal training to qualify for no-fee legitimacy.

However, landlords can still require prospective tenants to submit written documentation from a health care professional to prove they are in need of an ESA. The new law also imposes harder penalties on people who misrepresent emotional service animals. Those who falsely claim an ESA will face a second-degree misdemeanor which is punishable by a $500 fine, community service, and possible incarceration.

The Pet Effect: Why is the Thought Rapidly Spreading?

man reading articles

Psychotherapist Dana Dorfman is a believer in The Pet Effect – the thought which suggests that getting a pet will make you happier and healthier. She is not alone in this as she has written, “A preponderance of evidence supports the contention that pets affect our overall health—mental and physical.” However, Psychology Today Blogger Marc Bekoff disagrees as he says, “The preponderance of the evidence does not support the hype about the curative powers of companion animals.”

So why are the “studies and evidence” of links between owning pets and human health more popular? And why is there no attention to contradictions on the health benefits of owning pets? As Hal Herzog, Ph.D. points out, nobody wants to write and read about these “Bad News” articles.
