“It is our mission to save dogs and veterans, alike, to reduce the unnecessary loss of life to euthanized dogs and veteran suicides,” posted Wolfhounds Legacy Corporation – a nonprofit on their Facebook page. However, Hendry County’s weather hasn’t been ideal for the corporation’s service animal training for the past few days. As an effort of assistance Pioneer Community Center has offered its indoor facilities for the Henry-Glades WLC group to use. Because of this, training the service dogs for door opening, public restroom guidance, and off-leash work was completed. Hendry-Glades Wolfhounds Legacy Corporation Group Leader Tyla Bebon said, “Next we will be starting on click training to work specifically on tasks- get help, retrieve items, pick up, carry and specific tasks that each individual veteran may need assistance with.” while thanking Pioneer Community Center for the help.

How Does Your Pet’s Love for You Benefit Your Health?

cheerful-woman-embracing-dog-while-sitting-on-grass-in-4148872As Psychology Today stated, ”Researchers have determined that interacting with a friendly animal lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate, and has a positive effect on the body’s levels of stress-modulating hormones, particularly cortisol and dopamine.” The more physical you are as you spend time with your pet, the more you release dopamine which helps you stay happy and calm. In addition to that, your pet’s unconditional love and your interaction stimulates the production of oxytocin – a hormone that enhances bonding and social interaction. Sometimes called the “love hormone,” high oxytocin release in your brain makes you more empathetic to other people and animals while being relieved of stress and anxiety.

RedRover’s Programs Serve Pet Owners with Different Struggles

Founded at Sacramento in 1987, RedRover has made its organization’s mission to strengthen and care for human and animal bonds. As pet owners face financial hardships due to the pandemic, the organization has opened a new grant program called “Emergency Boarding”. This program covers the cost for 2 weeks of boarding for pets whose owners have been hospitalized or quarantined due to the COVID-19 infection. Not only that, but the organization also has The RedRover Relief program. This initiative offers small financial assistance to owners whose pets are in need of urgent veterinarian care from life-threatening emergencies. Case managers provide emotional support and guidance to the pet owners as they pass through the relief’s application process.

Children Read Stories to Therapy Dogs on Zoom

children read stories

People. Animal. Love. (PAL) is a Washington-based nonprofit group. Before the pandemic, the therapy animals were taken to care facilities, libraries, and prisons to provide comfort. Now, they have changed policies by letting children read stories to the therapy dogs on Zoom.

The program, named “Read to a PAL Therapy Dog!” coordinates the therapy dogs plus a few cats to children who are practicing reading online.

Nicolas Gaiani, a six-year-old, is one of the booked clients who get to read the lyrics of What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong to his furry audience. Nicholas’s mother, Alissa Gaiani, said, “He’s really proud that he can read. It’s really given him a platform to show that off a bit.”

Drive-In Pet Therapy Sessions For California Dementia Patients

pet sessions for dementia patients

Kronk and Kuzco are two alpacas from the Helen Woodward Animal Center that greet the clients from Alzheimer’s San Diego for the Pet Encounter Therapy Critter Drive-In. They are two of the animals that bring joy to visitors who stay in their cars as part of social distancing practices.

Part of the encounter is the center’s staff providing sheets of fun facts about the animals outside the car windows. Visitors have held up thank you notes inside their vehicles with smiles and laughter. This shows the appreciation and joy the animals bring to clients even as they safely distance themselves socially.

“It means so much to us to find a unique way to provide this therapy. We are looking forward to offering this opportunity to the other facilities we used to regularly visit before the pandemic hit,” says Robert Cohen, who has run the program for over 26 years.

Okanagan-Based Couple Starts a New Pet Food Initiative

couple starts pet food project

Nicole Wilks once met a homeless man and his dog, Odin, in downtown Kelowna. After a difficulty sleeping episode of thinking how a homeless man can feed his pup, Wilks and her husband A.J. Frey brought the man dogfood the next day. This act led to a project of distribution and supply of pet food and pet necessities to anyone who needed it.

The Animal Food Bank, which was founded by the couple last December 2019, has now reached Calgary in hopes of helping financially-struggling owners feed their pets. A.J. Frey said, “There’s no qualifiers, we’re not here to judge anybody,” Struggling pet owners can order food on the initiative’s website by filling out a form.

Veterinary Clinics Observe Social Distancing Guidelines Through Creative Ways

vet clinics social distancing

During this time of the pandemic, it’s hard to keep a distance of six feet between clients and vet clinic staff. But when the weather is good, the Marquette Township Animal Medical Center conducts the pet examinations in the local dog park. The dog park has several facilities that allow patients to be positioned above ground level, making the examinations easier. Yet, the success of the exam depends on the preference of a patient as some animals become more active outside and others feel calmer in open spaces. Julie Vezzetti, a Veterinarian at Animal Medical Center said, “We take the cues from the patients and we also listen to our clients as to what may be the best situation.”

New Mexico Education Outreach Shifts to Online Animal Education Units

new mexico education outreach

Jean Gilbert has been a long time member of the Humane Society of Southern New Mexico (HSSNM). The focus of her work was to reach out to children about animal issues. Included in her outreach focuses on the importance of spaying or neutering animals, vaccinations, microchips, and the humane treatment of service animals and companion animals.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, her ways of reaching out have been closed. To keep teaching children the importance of animal care amidst the pandemic, she collaborated with Cruces Creatives maker space. “Putting together the units has been fulfilling, especially at this time, when it’s not possible to hold ‘Fur’ever Friends’ or ‘Critter Connection’ sessions in the schools or Boys & Girls Club,” Gilbert said.

Dr. Michael Blackwell’s AlignCare®

aligncare

Veterinary care is hardly affordable nowadays especially for middle and lower-class families. According to the University of Tennessee’s College of Social Work and the Access to Veterinary Care Coalition study, 28% percent of American households have reported having barriers to veterinary care in the past two years with money being the biggest barrier.

With Dr. Blackwell’s advocated AlignCare® system, families with pets are connected with veterinary service providers while leveraging community activities and resources. This means little to no cost of struggling families who wish to afford veterinary care. The AlignCare® system is Program for Pet Health Equity’s main project – a collaboration program led by Dr. Blackwell of the University of Tennessee’s along with various community partners.

Massachusetts Humane Society Animal Thanks Its Community

pets for companionship

Since March 16, Dakin Humane Society has only been able to accept pets through emergency surrenders. This led to the flooding of phone calls, direct messages, and emails to their networks from people who want to help.

To this day more than 275 animals have found their new homes. People who have struggled to feed their pets due to financial hardships caused by the pandemic have been given pet food through the Dakin’s Pet Food Aid program. The DHS has shared over 30,000 pounds of pet food with the help of various organization organizations, other animal shelters, and the general public. This has been made possible by your love of animals and Dakin Humane Society thanks you for that.
