Port Lavaca, Texas – Local community members volunteered their time along with their pets to help cheer the local neighborhood isolated in their homes due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

When news arrived that seniors who were residents are isolated in their rooms at local living facilities due to the outbreak, community members and neighbors decided to get together to provide smiles and make other isolated community members happy.

“I started brainstorming things that could be done to help, such as putting bird feeders and yard art outside their windows,” said Veronica Koliba. “Then the thought of a pet parade just popped in my head that other than family, who or what would bring joy and smiles to anyone’s face?  Duh, animals.”

In Belgium, a cat had diarrhea, experienced vomiting, and difficulty breathing after being infected with COVID-19 from its owner who traveled from Northern Italy.

On that same day, Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department released a report of a 17-year-old Pomeranian that was initially tested “weak positive” for SARS-CoV-2 yielded results confirming COVID-19 infection.

This raises the question of “Should pets be tested for COVID-19?” to avoid the spread of infection to humans and other animals.

In Franksville, Wisconsin, Stepping Stone Farms hopes to help first responders and frontline healthcare workers by easing their stresses from the battle of flattening the COVID-19 curve.

As part of the inclusion for the social distancing measure, frontliners and first responders who think about visiting the farm are required to contact the first for scheduling a 30-60 minute period of decompression and therapy.

Part of the “get away from it all” experience is to wander the paths at the farm, feed the chickens, pet the therapy horses and other farm animals. The farm’s executive director Lia Sader states that studies show that “Fresh outside air and human-animal interaction significantly reduces physiological anxiety levels.”

The Animal Defense League of Texas in San Antonio (ADL) has now suspended its visitation operations to the public but volunteers still come daily to take care of the rescue animals.

However, the ADL still continues adoption operations and finding foster homes for shelter animals but only by appointment. Three local organizations of Cleveland, Ohio are offering pet food supplies for citizens in need amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Friends of the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, Neighborhood Pets Cleveland, and the Cleveland Animal Protective League are all offering pantry giveaways to pet owners struggling financially for being out of work during the pandemic quarantines.

The Animal Defense League of Texas had its March 19, 2020 fundraiser canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This halted the infusion of approximately $150,000 which was very much needed for the organization.

“Given the current economic downturn and general uncertainty, ADL is experiencing a below-average response across all fundraising initiatives including our spring mailer campaign. This has led to a substantial decrease in the funding needed to support our strategic, lifesaving initiatives,” said Joel McLellan, Executive Director for the Animal Defense League. The shelter has instead encouraged the community and those interested in helping to raise donations and leverage their friends and family via Facebook to aid the helpless animals stuck in the pandemic situation.

Despite the successful advocacy to popularize the subject of mental health stigma, misconceptions are still being circulated causing the issue to not be taken seriously.

An example is the government not requiring a strict or formal training of an animal and sometimes nothing at all before a person in need receives an ESA (Emotional Support Animal). There are also others who self-identify with issues and practice fraudulent ownership of ESAs which are dangerous to the general public since untrained animals can be aggressive towards other animals and humans. These activities alone cause a vitriol against ESAs, owners, and those in a legitimate need of one.

The Helen Woodward Animal Center of San Diego increases its Pet Food Assistance program activities for community members who recently lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Through their AniMeals program, starting March 23, 2020, the non-profit organization will drive through the San Diego area for pet food distributions at no cost. Pet food distributions will be on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Given supplies are for two weeks of dog or cat food. Households must have a maximum of 3 pets. Only those who lost their jobs due to the quarantines and closures can avail of the program and are required to fill out a pick-up appointment request form at https://animalcenter.org/programs-services/animeals. As California Governor Gavin Newsom orders citizens to home-quarantine, it isn’t just the people who feel the effects of the pandemic. Cats in California shelters face the risk of receiving minimal care since the general public cannot visit them for adoption.

The Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) battles this issue by sending more than 35 of their sheltered cats to foster homes. This is a win-win situation as the adopted cats will receive proper loving care by their foster homes and citizens who receive the cats will find companionship during the quarantine.
