healing powers of dude

There’s a new comedy series on Netflix, and it’s not your typical comedy. It tells the story of an 11-year-old boy named Noah Ferris who struggles with social anxiety. But what helps him cope with his experiences in middle school is his emotional support dog Dude.

The actor, Mauricio Lara, who played Noah’s friend says that because of the show, he realized how vital it is to have a support system. Appreciating support dogs, he says, “It can’t not be fun being with a puppy all day.” He also adds that he hopes the show increases people’s awareness of social anxiety disorder in kids.

Missouri Legislation Cracks Down on Fake Service Animals

fake service animal

There’s a growing trend of people passing off their pets as service animals – and it’s hurting the reputation of real service animals. For example, an Alabama man was on a flight from Atlanta to San Diego when a fellow passenger’s dog mauled him.

The Missouri legislation is pending and this legislation will make it an offense to misrepresent regular pet dogs as service dogs. This law recognizes mental health assistance animals, but limits them to trained dogs.

Animal Therapy And How It Affects Your Mental Health

animal pet therapy

Have you heard of animal therapy? Animal therapy, also called pet therapy, is a form of therapy where a person with a mental health issue get support from an animal. That animal can be a dog, cat, horse, or fish!

Various mental health problems benefit from animal therapy. They include but are not limited to Anxiety, Depression, Agoraphobia, and more. Children and adults alike can use animal therapy!

Picture this out: Let’s say a patient lacks trust in his surroundings and often feels anxious. Having an animal beside him allows him to cope. The animal will provide psychological and physical stimulation such as encouraging the person to play, walk, go outside, and care for it. As a result, the person’s overall well-being improves.

Hotel Receptionist Denies Customers Because Of Service Dog

hotel denies couple

Bryan Purifoy and his wife LeeAnn were supposed to have a wonderful evening at the Burgundy Hotel, when the hotel receptionist denied them a room. The reason? The couple brought their service dog named Jax, a collie shepherd.

Bryan says that he is frustrated and that he is allowed to go on a date night just like everybody else. The couple expressed they don’t want money or room. All they request is a simple apology from the receptionist.

The hotel owner apologized for the incident and has arranged for the couple and receptionist to meet personally on January 16. The manager also published a statement saying that the hotel happily welcomes service animals and that the incident was a result of room type confusion.

What Veterans With PTSD Should Know About Service Dogs

ptsd and service dogs

Post-traumatic stress disorder affects the lives of about 20% of veterans who have served in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. And while service dogs are not considered a cure for PTSD, they empower veterans by serving as a tool that helps overcome the disorder.

K9s for Warriors, a charity and provider of service dogs for disabled American veterans, shares a research study released by Purdue University in 2018. It revealed how veterans with PTSD were able to mentally benefit from service dogs. They had less anger, less anxiety, and better sleep.

Veterans who want to apply for a service dog should provide documentation proving that they have been diagnosed with PTSD. Furthermore, they need to undergo interviews with service dog providers, criminal background checks, and a training course.

Plea for New Zealand Airlines to Relax Rules on Support Dogs

commercial airline

Some airlines tend to be very discriminatory against dogs that assist people with disabilities. For example, Air New Zealand doesn’t allow psychological or emotional assistance dogs unless they are headed to the United States. And these dogs are allowed in the cabin.

Kotuku Foundation Assistance Animals Aotearoa founder Merenia Donne says that all commercial airlines have their own rules that are inconsistent.

As a result, the charity has launched a program called Canines in Cabins. This program trains dogs to gain experience on commercial flights and small planes. According to Donne, they want to have a program that all airlines recognize and also assures that dogs are going to be safe and comfortable with their handlers while in flights.
