Cross and Crown Lutheran Church held their yearly Animal Blessing on Sunday, October 13. The church holds this special event to celebrate our furry friends who are there for us in times of joy and need.

Those who joined also donated blankets and pet food for the Darlington County Humane Society, a non-profit organization that cares for abandoned and neglected dogs and cats.

A lot of kids feel nervous and get self-conscious when reading to adults. But at the Pottsboro Library in Texas, children now have the opportunity to enjoy a great reading experience – thanks to a program called “Paws to Read.”

In case you don’t know what this program is about, it allows children to read to therapy dogs. Therapy dog owner Courtney Anderson says that she wanted to help start Paws to Read to help kids be able to read outside a classroom setting.

Amanda Major, a Pottsboro resident, brings her daughters to the library so they can read to the dogs. Her kids have been loving the program!

A 2015 study showed that interacting with dogs helps lower college students’ stress and anxiety levels. Meet Ashley Young, a junior at the UNC who currently fosters a black lab along with her roommate Rylie MacKinnon.

The four-month-old lab named Dean will soon become a service dog through Eyes Ears Nose & Paws (EENP). Even if Dean is still training to be one, Ashley has already said many wonderful things about him. According to her, Dean is so therapeutic. She takes Dean outside which gives her a break from school responsibilities. 

Ashley is excited about the impact Dean is going to make in the community one he’s a certified service dog.

Joining Tony Doucette in the Windsor Morning, Anthrozoology professor Beth Daly answered several questions about service animals and their presence in school. Here were some of the things discussed:

The uses of service animals: Service animals help with many things, from opening and closing doors for disabled people, to providing comfort to those with autism.

Service animals in classroom settings: School boards may question the need for service animals since people can do their job. Yet, a disabled child may feel most comfortable asking a service animal for help. 

Considerations when creating policies: School boards need to think about some important things such as the fear of animals, allergies, and more. Boards must ensure fairness for everyone in the classroom – kids with and without a service animal.

Antonio was a boy who got shot in the head in 2015 as his family was on their way to dinner. He was just a nine-year-old boy back then. Antonio went into a state of coma for 18 days and had five brain surgeries. 

To help in his day-to-day life, in 2016, he was paired with a service dog named Alice. Alice assists Antonio in many things. Some of them include going to school, taking a walk outside, detecting an oncoming seizure, and helping him with his balance. 

Tara, Antonio’s mother, says, “She is a loyal and loving hero everyday. She’s saved Antonio’s life many times. She is his guardian angel and helps him live his new normal to the fullest extent possible.”

Did you know? Antonio recently got awarded as the 2019 American Hero Dog. Other finalists included Piglet, a dog who helps locate people on land and water, and Yeager, a dog who detects explosive devices.

Kenyon College has an unofficial mascot that emerged from its liberal-arts college two years ago.

Moxie, a black cat, arrived on campus as a six-month-old kitten in 2017 with another cat called Mosie. Pastor Susan Stevens, adopted the strays, but Moxie wasn’t one to stay home.

These days, Moxie spends his time riding on students’ backpacks around the campus, roaming and scratching maple tree trunks. The school’s community is delighted to have moxie around although sometimes he can cause quite the commotion by walking in lecture halls and the on-campus Episcopal church during reverend Rachel Kessler’s sermons. He even had to be rescued by the fire department one time when he got stuck on a coffee shop’s roof.

Kessler usually shoos him out and shrugs it off, but says she loves Moxie despite her allergies. Students at the campus feel the same way.

There’s a difference between a service dog and emotional support animals, and private dog trainer Brandi Garcia wishes that more people are educated on the true definition of service dogs.

This month aims to raise awareness for them and for the valuable work that they do for their humans.

While every breed can become a service dog, not all are capable to be one. Prospects can already undergo the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test at 7 weeks old by putting them in different situations to determine confidence and trainability.

The most common service dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and Collies due to their trainability and stable temperament. Service dogs are considered to be on duty and must not be distracted by petting.

Often, pet owners are unable to provide equipment for their disabled pets due to lack of funds.

To aid this growing concern, Thailand-based Chakr Pichaironnarongsongkram Foundation is now distributing special wheelchairs as part of their initiative.

The wheelchairs being distributed by the foundation are made of inexpensive PVC and can help the animals with walking and physical therapy. These are made of lightweight materials, are adjustable to the animal’s size and are designed to have two or four wheels depending on the impairment.

These inventions were developed under the guidance of veterinarians and aim, not only to help animals move but also to give them a chance to live normal lives again.

Now our furry friends can get the support they need to resume their lives.

Last Saturday, our furry friends and their owners had fun in the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ Event at Clarksburg City Park, Nutter Fort, WV.

Megan Krajewski, Board Member of the West Virginia Service Dog Support Group, said that they are aiming to educate the community on the difference between service animals, emotional support animals, and therapy animals, and the law that surrounds them.

All About Dogs, a training organization, was happy to see many pet owners coming together for the event. Owner Brenda Scotchie said it was great to meet people who are familiar with training and can help with dog concerns.

Dogs and cats alike were offered vaccines by the Clarksburg Veterinary Hospital, while spay and neuter vouchers were given to residents by Harrison County. There were also games and activities for the attendees.
