Volunteer for a meaningful summer

lincoln park woman

Loop Abroad is not your typical study abroad program.

This summer, Nina Biundo, 19, a sophomore of MSU from Lincoln Park, volunteered her way through summer by spending two weeks on it in Thailand. By working in dog and elephant shelters, Nina recalls it as the best experience of her life.

Loop Abroad’s veterinary program allows students to gain hands-on experience on front line animal rescue and conservation, and how to tend to abused and abandoned animals. They work side-by-side with expert veterinarians.

Founded in 2009 by Addam and Jane Stine, the organization brings together students aged 14 to 30 to educate them in veterinary programs, animal science or marine biology while making a meaningful and lasting impact in their host countries.

Rescued Dogs and Cats from Hurricane Dorian Need Your Help

pets hurricane

Last Tuesday, it was reported that a total of 191 cats and dogs from shelters were airlifted from South Carolina to Delaware with the help of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Wings of Rescue.

Delaware’s Brandywine Valley SPCA branch is the operation’s central point and received rescued animals via the Best Friends Animal Society.

The death toll is rising in the Bahamas as Hurricane Dorian strikes on the archipelago leading to several organizations to team up for animal relief efforts.

Here’s how you can help!

Many of the animals are being prepared for adoption.

Adopt an animal evacuated from the hurricane zone and help shelters make more room for other rescued animals. There are local shelters you can reach out to in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, Delaware, Wisconsin, and North Carolina just to name some.

Service Animals Need Protection Too

police dog

In England, new legislation will protect service animals such as dogs and horses.

The new law dubbed as Finn’s Law was named after a service dog of the namesake who got stabbed while protecting his owner police handler David Wardell.

Finn received near-fatal injuries from his heroic deed.

Minister for Rural Affairs Mairi Gougeon says so many service animals selflessly protect us with some even nearly killed while doing so. She is thankful that Finn survived the attack but the suspect was only charged with criminal damage and was given a fine. With Wardell’s relentless campaign, the law will give service animals the protection they deserve with potential greater prison sentences and fines for worst cases of animal cruelty.

A Place to Hang out with Your Fur Baby

Dogs are known to be more part of the family than pets. They help reduce loneliness and are pretty helpful for people with psychiatric disorders.

If you’re living around Yakima and you love your dog, you’ll be ecstatic to know that many craft breweries are allowing customers to bring their dogs along. Depending on the pub, they may have their own rules.

Washington state law does not allow animals in food establishments. Counties are allowed to provide a variance from food code with pre-approval and Nathan Johnson of the Yakima County Health District said Yakima has four variances which allowed dogs in certain areas of the pubs.

Service animals are allowed, though. Don’t think of faking it as there’s a law that imposes a fine for lying about your four-legged friend to be a service animal.

That being said, don’t give your dog a beer and keep it out of reach. But you can enjoy their company.

It’s Illegal to Lie About Your Animal

fake emotional support animal

Michigan legislators are currently discussing a new bill that will make it illegal to fake emotional support animals.

In this proposal, jail time of up to 90 days and a maximum fine of $500 and community service will be imposed for those who will be caught. It will also require providers to treat a patient for at least 6 months before providing a notarized letter to give a designation to the animal.

However, mental health professionals like Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner William Davis have concerns regarding the note as some of the patients might have been treated somewhere else.

State Rep. Matt Hall, R-Marshall says these regulations are to keep people from exploiting the system as there are cases where people just want to bring their pet along.

Emotional support animals are different from service dogs, and the proposed bill will not affect the latter.

Future Guide Dogs Are Looking for a Foster Home

dogs with wings

Dogs With Wings is looking for people to adopt 10 puppies in the next two months.

The Edmonton-based organization whose goal is to change lives for the better by training canines to become service animals puts puppies into foster care for a year until they reach the right age, size and maturity to be sent back for formal training.

The individuals they are looking for should be ok with this setup, love dogs and are willing to give them a temporary home without payment.

Only food, veterinarian care, and training will be shouldered by the program.

Doreen Slessor, Dog’s With Wings’ executive director, says that it won’t be like taking care of a regular puppy because they will need to go everywhere with the person to give the puppy a solid exposure on different sites and sounds.

If you’d like to learn more about the program and the process, visit Dogs With Wings.

Therapy dogs help kids learn through reading program

reading program

Meanwhile, in Prescott, AZ, therapy dogs are being read to by children every week at Prescott Unified School District elementary schools.

What started as a small group in October 2018 out of the PAWS program at Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Pet Partners of Prescott grew to more than 25 teams by the summer of 2019.

The program teaches the children positive traits and emotions, as well as calm and comfort.

The Read With Me Program, in particular, builds self-confidence among the kids while improving their social skills and focus. The group is proud to say that it helps the children become more motivated to participate.

Therapy dogs helping teens and kids

teen and dog

Moving on to therapy or emotional support animals, New York is bringing in unlikely allies to teenagers in trouble with the law in the form of dogs.

Rising Ground is using therapy dogs to help these teens. Lisa Crook, Vice President for Justice for Youth and Families Programs of Rising Ground, says that this method allowed them to get through the kids quicker, therapeutically.

It also helps them cope with residential placement. While there for six to seven months, they learn life skills, vocational training, receive counseling and peer support and take trips outside the city.

They are encouraged by Oliver Martell, a Vocational and Educational Coordinator of Rising Ground, to think about where the dogs started when they started training them and where they are now. Both teens and dogs learn and grow from this experience as the program aims to train the dogs to become certified therapy dogs which will be tested after the 8-week program by Josh Abolt, owner of  Backcounrty K-9 Training.

So far, the program has been successful and the arrests have decreased, says Crook.

A Campaign for Awareness

petting dog

According to the Bureau of Global Public Affairs, there are around half a million service dogs helping people all over the US.

With news on taking advantage of the law and the lack of knowledge thereof, Courtnie Jayne of Springfield, Illinois is on a mission to spread awareness around service animals.

Americans with Disabilities Act allows service animals access to any open place accessible to the public. Establishments are allowed to ask the owner two questions: if it’s a service animal and the tasks that it can do, but Jayne said not everyone knows this.

In some establishments, people try to pet her service dog who helps with her Agoraphobia and severe panic and anxiety which shouldn’t be done because it distracts the animal from the job.

That being said, Jayne is working together with Juan Huerta, the city’s Director of Community Relations in providing informational sessions in their library to educate Springfield residents on rules around service animals. She has gotten support from the city council’s aldermen to help spread awareness.

Fake it till you make it!

spotting fake service animals

In Alabama, it’s a different story.

Service animals perform a lot of life-saving tasks, but there’s a growing concern as more and more people are claiming pets to be service animals when they aren’t.

In a WBMA report, from September 1 false claims of pets to be service animals will be deemed as a crime in Alabama.

And it’s not just false claims by pet owners.

Shelby County’s Roverchase specializes in training service animals for people with disabilities, and their director, Abigail Witthauer, says there are several fraudulent service animal “trainers” on the web that offer vests and certificates for money.

One way to tell that an animal is a true service animal is by observing its behavior. A fake service animal will try to get attention from others. Also, handlers should be ready to answer two questions: “Is this a service dog?” and “What task does it perform?”
