Chelsea Mayberry has autism, anxiety, and depression. For the past 3 years, she has visited Central Dakota Humane Society, a no-kill shelter, to cuddle and greet dozens of cats for adoption. Her socializing with the felines has a calming effect on her. According to Chelsea’s mom, she struggles relating to people. However, when she goes to the shelter, she meets those who’ll adopt the kittens. That’s when she gets to socialize.

“Kitty therapy” has not only helped with Chelsea’s socialization, but it has also helped her academically. As a volunteer at the shelter, she researches about the medical conditions that some of the kittens have and shares what she has learned to people.

In-Stride With Therapeutic Riding Inc. was founded by Dana Flaherty, who is a breast cancer survivor. Dana works full-time as a teacher and is responsible for coordinating the programs at In-Stride. In case you didn’t know, In-Stride With Therapeutic Riding Inc. helps kids with all types of disabilities. Some kids who come to In-Stride to spend time with the horses struggle with autism, anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

Dana says, “This is really good with kids with autism. Having a job with the horses brings out the best in people. I’ve seen so many kids branch out just after one summer of lessons.” Veterans can also come and ride the horses on Thursdays.

In-Stride has been struggling with funds that would help participants with their lessons, pay the rent, and keep all the animals fed. Dana also hopes to expand their program to therapeutic gardening and help cancer survivors like herself. In-Stride looks forward to raising $260,000. Pet Memorial Parks at Bideawee on Long Island has been a resting place for over 65,000 animals since 1916. They offer a wide variety of memorial services, from burial/cremation to transportation. In fact, some notable figures have buried their pets in Pet Memorial Parks – for example, Richard Nixon, who buried his pet dog Checkers while he was still practicing law.

According to Maureen Fergus, Bideawee’s Special Projects Manager, around 450 cremations and 400 burials are performed each year. While cats and dogs are mostly brought into the park, there are also other unique animals such as a pet skunk, an alligator, and a giant tortoise.

In September, they will be celebrating Pet Memorial Day at the Wantagh location. This celebration is open to the public and there will be various activities such as candle lighting, tree seedling distribution, and more.

Olrig Church in Castletown and Canisbay Church recently held services to thank God for pets and animals, and all that they do for us. These included guide dogs, therapy dogs, and sniffer dogs. 007 superfan Rev Lyall Rennie conducted the services on July 14. The first service was at 10:00 AM at Olrig Church in Castletown, and the second one was at noon at Canisbay Church.

Buc is a 5-year-old miniature horse at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care. Buc is new, and he was rescued by Dale Dunn and Chris Dunn with Pet Partners of North Florida. When Buc first arrived, he was being cared for 24/7 since he was badly injured. Now, he brings smiles to children and their families at Nemours.

According to Jennifer Pfieffer, a nurse manager who has done animal assistant work for 10 years, “Buc shows that you don’t have to be a shiny penny to be loved.” She says that animals have an amazing ability to heal people and that they can lower people’s heart rate and blood pressure.

Ever heard of Mountain Horse Farm? It’s a 33-acre break and breakfast retreat center situated in the Finger Lakes region of New York. You’ll find Bella and Bonnie there – two pet highland cows who would love to cuddle with you.

Providing animal-based therapy, Bella and Bonnie were purchased by Mr. and Ms. Vullers – the co-owners of Mountain Horse Farm who traded their corporate lives to set up their farm. While neither of them has a psychology degree, they can read the cows’ moods to make sure that people can interact with them safely. Their number one advice to everyone is to stay calm when around the cows since they can sense emotions.

On July 7, a special event was held where hundreds of bikers participated in. It was a ride for a cause, the 16th annual Hogs for Dogs benefit ride, held at Denney’s Harley-Davidson. The purpose of the ride was to raise money for no-kill animal shelter ​Castaway Animals Rescue Effort (CARE).

One of the riders was Rod Petersen and his dog, Stingray. Petersen and Stingray have been together for over 12 years. Petersen calls Stingray his pro bike companion. Stingray isn’t just a regular dog, but she has also been trained to be a service dog. She senses drops in Petersen’s blood sugar and when he gets stressed out.

The Hogs for Dogs benefit ride raised awareness of animal homelessness. Hopefully, the event is able to raise $33,000 as it did in 2018.

Some people cannot handle the idea of dog euthanasia because of chronic pain. Rob Landry, a veterinary pain specialist at the Colorado Center for Animal Pain Management & Rehabilitation, is sick of it too.

That is why he teamed up with a neuroscientist named Linda Watkins. Watkins invented a gene therapy, in the form of a one-time injection, that helps in the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine.

Shane, a dog that suffers from chronic pain, was able to benefit from the therapy. 8 years ago, Shane was in a car accident, and because of that, he could not go to the bathroom for longer than 5 minutes. He received the treatment and the result was amazing.
