In the bustling Aberdeen International Airport, anxiety and confusion cannot be avoided. Luckily, 3 therapy dogs are on duty. The Canine Crew, composed of Noodle the Beagle, Breagh the Golden Retriever, and Grace the Scottish Deerhound are part of the airport’s “therapets”. Canine Concern Scotland introduced the idea of using therapy dogs for passengers who are flight-anxious.

A passenger’s mood brightens when they see the dogs. The therapet’s presence lowers blood pressure and can even provide assistance for those who require emotional support. “People are now saying they want to fly from Aberdeen because it’s the only airport in the UK to do this. The only danger is that people miss their flights because they are so well distracted by the dogs.” Said Fraser Bain, the airport’s duty manager.

Tzivia Gover was brisk-walking one morning with her dog Corby. She had been planning to do so as she read an article about how it was healthy for the heart. But during their walk, she met another woman who stopped them. Not really interested in small talk, Gover had no choice. Prior to that morning, Gover experienced heartbreak in her recent breakup.

The woman simply asked what kind of dog Corby was and the conversation progressed from an inquiry to the sharing of realizations. Louise Suzanne Boyd lost her daughter in August 2011. Her daughter, Elianna, passed away due to a brain hemorrhage at the age of 12. As a parent, losing a child is one of the greatest pains they can experience. Louise wishes that this kind of pain doesn’t get to be experienced by anyone else. There are things that are abundant, but for a dog’s years of life, that’s not the case. Life at school isn’t easy, and at the Linden Lodge School in Wimbledon, children have a variety of learning difficulties. For children with special conditions, it can be daunting to learn since they don’t function like the others who normally do. So, the school decided to bring therapy dogs to attend classes with the children.

The reason why dogs reduce anxiety in learning is that their calming presence promotes the release of oxytocin in the brain. When the hormone is released, the nervous system calms down which makes learning more likely to take place.

Because of the dogs, there has been a significant increase in student attendance and performance. The students were more motivated to learn and had a better relationship with their peers and teachers.

Dogs are great and all, and owning one can make you feel less lonely. Even for growing children, the benefits of having dogs are spectacular. Hayley Christian of the School of Population and Global Health in Australia concluded an as-yet-unpublished study on family dogs. The findings connect to the previous works about children developing better when they grow up around dogs.

“We simply looked at the kids with a dog and those that did not have a dog. Even in a very young age group, those with a dog were more physically active,” Christian told Fatherly. “Those with a family dog were also doing better developmentally, particularly with prosocial behaviors, when they interacted with adults and other children.”

As Zoeylyn Avarelo of Biloxi opens her birthday gifts during her seventh birthday party, her excitement levels to a 100,000%. This is because a unicorn visited her. The little girl’s parents knew how much she loved mythical animals. So they called different petting zoos to have a pony dressed as a unicorn and come to the celebration. Mythical animals are rare and expensive as they were charged $250-$300.

Luckily, Megan Plaisance, the mini-unicorn owner and a part of Fidelis Hooves – a therapy horse group from Louisiana, heard about the party from Facebook. Megan and her husband brought Cadence as they wanted to grant the little girl’s wish. “I decided to drive over an hour and a half to do that for her even though we just do therapy. We should always remember that it’s always important to bring joy and happiness to people that need it more than the money,” Plaisance said.
