Meet the New Addition to the Conservation Officer Service

major and mann

Sgt. Cynthia Mann of the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service is super impressed by her new partner. It’s Major, a service detection dog that’s skilled in detecting smells such as bear gall bladders, firearms, shell casings, zebra and quagga mussels.

While Major’s job is to look for invasive mussels on boats traveling through and into B.C., he can also assist in detecting poached animals and illegal firearms during hunting season.

Mann says, “They are just incredible animals, and his drive blows me away. When I put on his harness and show him his toy, that dog switches everything off and he’s zoned into work.”

All that Major asks in return is his favorite toy and a “Good boy.”

Canines Make a Positive Impact on Physical and Mental Health of Humans

dog and veteran

Not all soldiers are humans and carry rifles. For instance, Chip happens to be a canine who served the United States Army in World War II.

More research is being made worldwide concerning the effects of dogs on the health of humans. Based on the studies, families with dogs have a lower risk of getting cardiovascular disease. Another study revealed that people who were given dogs had reduced blood pressure in just 6 months.

When it comes to the mental aspect, veterans who had service dogs had less depression and were more sociable. The quality of their lives was good. If you want to know more about pet ownership and pet care, set up an appointment at the Fort Carson Veterinary Center.

Are You Ready To Partner With A Service Dog?

partnering with service dog

If you have a disability and are thinking of partnering with a service dog, there are some things you need to consider. Handling a service dog is a big responsibility. If you don’t give it a lot of thought, you could end up hurting yourself, your relationships, and the service dog community.

To help you decide, here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Can I handle the costs of caring for my service dog for ten years or more?

2. Am I able and willing to care for my service dog every single day?
3. Am I okay with being the center of attention? Am I prepared to answer questions about my service dog?

4. Am I prepared to deal with possible conflicts when traveling with my dog?

Remember that while service dogs help people in many ways, they’re not for everyone. At the end of the day, you’re going to have to be responsible for your choice. We hope that these questions guide your decision.

How To Care For Your Service Dog While Traveling

travel with service dog

Are you planning to travel with your service dog internationally? If so, here’s what you need to remember:

1. If your service dog has certain allergies to food, medication, and other products, be sure to bring your own supply.

2. Order food and medication for your pet online and have them shipped to your travel destination. Also, check whether your destination has local pet stores.

3. When traveling to warmer climates, add Pedialyte® to your dog’s water bowl to prevent dehydration. Place freezer packs in the pockets of your dog’s vests to cool its body.

4. When traveling to cooler climates, get a vest or coat with insulation. Brush your dog’s coat frequently.

5. Carry a head halter or muzzle with you because some public places may require them.

6. Take good care of yourself so that you can also care for your service dog!

Dog-Owner Teams Help Patients In Health Care Settings

sadie

Sadie is a 9½-year-old golden retriever-Labrador mix and a certified therapy dog in the United States. Her owner named Catherine Rutter says that before she got Sadie, she has already heard about therapy dogs and thought how great it would be to share them with others.

Aside from being a certified therapy dog, Sadie also happens to be one of the engaged dogs at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

These dogs help serve patients with conditions such as cancer, dementia, epilepsy, and more. Some of their visits with patients aren’t therapy-based. The dogs can simply be there to raise the spirits of staff members and patients.

Coordinator of Wake Forest Baptist’s Animal-Assisted Therapy program Suzanne Thompson says,“ Even though a prospective therapy dog has been certified and meets our other criteria, I evaluate them to see if they’re a good fit here.”

Dog Changes The Life Of A Student

pablo

Before Charlotte Ferrell bought Pablo, her world was different. Her mom died and she didn’t get out of bed for five days. She found it hard to return to her routine. Pablo helped Charlotte cope with her struggles. Even if Charlotte doesn’t feel like getting up, she still does in order to take him out at night.

Taking care of an emotional support dog helps people with their mental disabilities. That’s because, with a support dog, they need to get up and do something. According to DAAS, all service animals are permitted on campus as long as students get approval and that the animals are trained.

Should You Have Furry Friends On Campus?

furry friends on campus

Sydney Schapel is a student at Elon University, and she shares her thoughts about pets being on campus. According to her, many students at Elon happen to be animal lovers. She also wonders whether the university will be allowing emotional support animals.

While some dorms at Elon University aren’t animal-friendly (because of students who are allergic), Sydney mentions the benefits of bringing an animal to campus:

  • Animals help students have an easier transition to college.
  • Animals make students more responsible since they will have to care for them while their parents are not around.
  • People are drawn to animals and with that, animals can help students form new friendships.
  • Animals bring the best in everyone.
  • Petting an animal has been shown to reduce anxiety.

Sydney says that she hopes that Elon University won’t find it hard to allow animals on campus. When she was choosing between Elon and Stetson, she chose Elon despite the fact that Stetson was animal-friendly.
