Kayla Feeser, 17 years old, is a Route 91 Survivor. Although she and her mom got out unharmed, everything they saw and heard had lasting effects. Kayla was always getting flashbacks of the event. Rebecca Hudson, Kayla’s mom, says that her daughter couldn’t get up to go to school on some days because of the flashbacks.

The good news is that Rebecca reached out to Smarty Paws, a group that trains thousands of dogs in a variety of disciplines – therapy dog, service dog, and more. With the help of Las Vegas Animal Assisted Therapy, Kayla was able to get a dog which she named Harvest (after the festival). Harvest will help calm Kayla down and may even accompany her to college.

It’s unusual to see a chihuahua in a police car, wouldn’t you agree? But wait until you see Zorro. He is the newest member of the police force in Marblehead, Ohio. Chief Casey Joy was the one who adopted him. She said that yesterday, Zorro sworn in at the village council as the village mascot.

While Zorro is not an official K-9 officer, he still goes on patrol. The best part? He’s currently in training to become a therapy dog.

Powell River Public Library and St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs know that younger kids find reading an intimidating experience. This is why the two organizations partnered so that children could practice reading out loud while having a gentle dog listen to them.

Sonia Zagwyn, the library children’s service coordinator, says that The Read to Dogs program was originally for geriatric patients and other sick individuals. But they found it to be beneficial for kids who are shy to read in front of their parents or peers. Terry Faubert, one of those who tried the program, brought her grandson with her. According to her, the program would also serve as a good introduction to dogs.

The family of Army Specialist Jake Carroll hosted a memorial 5K to keep alive his memory. Carroll died in action in 2010.

Patriot Rovers, a nonprofit that trains service dogs for veterans, named a service dog after Carroll. Now, the service dog (Jake) helps a US Army veteran struggling with PTSD. His name is SSGT Jesus Taitano. He says that Jake’s help to him and his family is priceless.

Carroll’s mother was able to speak with Taitano. She said that his heart was so tender and that she knew he needed the help of a service dog.

David Cantara is the founder of Patriot Rovers. He himself personally trains the dogs. He names each dog after a fallen soldier.

Penny is a four-month-old Aussiedoodle in training. In July 2019, she will become a certified therapy dog and be part of Ohio University’s Counseling and Psychological Services therapy dog staff.

Rinda Scoggan, a senior counselor at OU CPS, says that what’s important at the moment is that Penny gets to socialize with others, feel comfortable, and establish trust. After certification, Penny will make appearances with groups at the university and join some campus activities.

Samantha Girvan, president of the OU branch of 4 Paws for Ability and a senior studying forensic chemistry, believes that having dogs like Penny teaches students how to properly interact with therapy animals doing their jobs in public.

November 2 marks the end of a nearly 18-month program where dogs have undergone an intensive program to finally become service animals.

The said program, Retrieving Independence, sends dogs to be trained by inmates of the Turney Center. First, these inmates need to get qualified and interviewed before they can participate. Training for the dogs allows them to help disabled individuals with health issues like diabetes, seizures, and multiple sclerosis. Dogs are also taught tasks like opening and closing doors and loading the laundry.

It’s becoming more challenging for people with mental health disabilities to bring their emotional support animals in public areas. A lot of airlines have now placed limits on ESAs, United Airlines for example, after a passenger carried a peacock with her.

Amendments were recently made to the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw to permit people in Calgary to have livestock as emotional support animals in their homes. Common livestock animals that are allowed include chickens, miniature horses, and pigs. Exotic animals do not belong to the list.
