Tip to Get Rid of College Stress: Get a Pet!

pet cat

College can be a stressful time in a person’s life, which is why it always helps to have a friend to count on. Speaking of friends, pets make great ones. They increase our sense of accountability, giving us many reasons to face the day.

Here’s an inspiring story of Caroline Clendening who is a creation and tourism management major from Dallas, Texas. When she started college, she was diagnosed with depression and it made it difficult for her to interact with others, let alone eat. During her second year, she decided to adopt a pet cat and certify it as an emotional support animal. Her cat’s name is JiJi.

Caroline, now a fourth year, recalls how her life has changed since JiJi came. Because JiJi was counting on her each day, that motivated Caroline to carry on. Caroline is now the president of the club You’re Not Alone.

If you want to ease the stress of college life, know that cats are not the only options for pets. There are other animals that make you feel better. Examples are dogs, rabbits, turtles, and more.

Therapy Dogs Will Be Going To Campus

dogs will go to campus this year

Pets aren’t usually allowed in schools because of some cases such as allergies and they could distract the students. However, at Centerville Independent School District, the situation is different. A dog’s presence is used as therapy and services for students who need them.

While a student’s life includes stress and their mental health is very crucial, Centerville Highschool Principal Claudia Mordecai allowed trained therapy to service dogs to be on campus and houses one in their counselor’s office so that students can sign up for dog time.

The dogs work with children that require special needs as well as those in the typical classroom setting. There are also different purposes for dogs on campuses and one of it is it helps stops the bullying. Children who get exposed to dogs on campus get excited by their presence making one of their purposes conducive to the learning of students.

Several teachers also foster the therapy and service dogs. While children benefit from having dogs near their vicinity, they also learn how to care for them and appreciate the blessings of having dogs as man’s best friend. It teaches them the value of living beings and how to become better individuals when they grow up to become adults.

PTSD: Pets to Save us from Distress

dogs for veterans

Most war veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after service, and it is hard to comfort them when their panic strikes, but dogs have been to the rescue during such times, so here are the stories of veterans who had their lives changed by assistance animals from the Washington Area Human Society’s Pets for Vets.

Toby is an 18-month-old Pitbull Terrier mix whose owner was part of the U.S. Army, Jesse Stenger, 81-years-old from Finleyville had a wife who died of cancer has found companionship on his adopted canine friend. Even with his wife passed on, Jesse won’t be alone with having Toby by his side.

Also, Steven Adams, an Army veteran who fought in Operation: Desert Storm at Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the early 90’s gets calmed by his dog Otter when he feels anxious or jumpy. “Being around animals is therapy itself.” Said Adams. While Adams is the Manager of Veteran’s Services at the Patriot House, he also plans to bring veterans from the Patriot House to the humane society, so they can help care for the animals in the kennels waiting for a second chance at having a family.

Dogs Are Our Best Friends

dogs are best friends

Dogs are blessings to our lives and we often ask, “What did we do to deserve dogs?” While dogs improve our lives and emotional wellbeing, we wonder how really true it is. Here are some facts and studies about them.

A report of Medical News Today on a study about owning a dog showed that having a canine companion increases their lifespan and reduces the risk of premature death. Then a research of Harvard University suggested that dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease. It is a mystery why or how, but it seems that owning a dog makes the owners result to make the better choice of having a healthy lifestyle. Noticeable changes include physical activities because it makes the owner commit to walking the dog outside twice a day or more.

The Journal of Physical Activity and Health published a paper about how dog owners are more likely to walk outside for leisure purposes than both non-pet owners and cat owners. It was based on a study of 41,514 participants from California, which was composed of dog owners, cat owners, and non-pet owners.

Another study from the University of Missouri and Glasgow Caledonian University in the United Kingdom showed that adults with ages 60 and above have better health thanks to the enforced physical activities they do by taking their dogs outside on walks.

The Science of Canine Compassion

dogs have feelings

All animals have feelings and that includes dogs. Studies have shown that dogs are capable of responding to human emotions and the science community recognizes it.

Dogs change our way of living because we most likely turn to them in times of emotional distress rather than our relatives, a study of 975 dog-owning adults proves it. Even Voltaire observed and quoted: “It seems that nature has given the dog to man for his defense and for his pleasure. Of all animals, it is the most faithful: it is the best friend man can have.” That is why it’s not a shock to us when we hear that our canine companions are the most commonly used animals in therapy.

Research has also shown from time to time again that pet ownership gives a positive impact on human lives. Nowadays, dogs are being used increasingly as core components in a variety of mental health programs- offering companionship, happy associations, and unconditional love. In the United Kingdom, an organization called Pets as Therapy (PAT) houses more than 5,000 canines, which they let them meet 130,000 people a week.

Dogs also get awarded. In the US, there is also an organization called the American Kennel Club that has a Therapy Dog Program which recognizes six national dog therapy organizations and gives official award titles to dogs who have worked to bring a positive change to lives of people they have visited.

Pet Partners Offers Training Camp for Handlers and Potential Therapy Pets

stuffed animal

If you’re a pet handler and would like to get training for it to become a therapy animal, Pet Partners of Kansas City is offering everyone the opportunity. They need more therapy pets and handlers to visit hospitals, cancer centers, and schools.

During training, you will be working with a stuffed animal. Julie Goodman of Pet Partners says that they use stuffed animals so that the focus is on handlers, not the pets. Some of the challenges that pet handlers should go through include meeting loud strangers and passing by squeaky toys.

Take note that this training is not limited to dogs. Cats, hamsters, and rats can go through the training.

kids and canine

The Kids and Canines offers an opportunity for disadvantaged kids and rescued dogs to change their lives. Usually, kids that join the program are those that had to leave their schools for disruptive behavior. Through Kids and Canine, they get to train rescued dogs to become service dogs.

Two students who help one another are Nick, a senior at Dorothy Thomas School with behavioral issues, and Patriot, a Golden Retriever. Nick loves what he does for the dogs at Kids and Canine. Though he wants to enter the culinary industry after graduation, he still wants to continue his volunteer work at Kids and Canine.
