Can Your Service Animal Accompany You in the Operating Room?

operating room

Question: Can your service animal accompany you in the operating room?

Answer: A service animal may accompany its disabled owner/handler to any public spaces of general accommodation. These would be places where the owner/handler has access, such as libraries, schools, restaurants, movie theaters, etc., unless there is a particular health hazard such as in a hospital operating room. The presence of the animal would alter the sterile environment.

World War 1 Memorial to Be Built for 1 Million Service Animals

pigeons

Would you believe that 11 million horses, donkeys, and mules, and 100,000 dogs and 200,000 pigeons served during world war 1? In fact, a pigeon named Le Valliant lost its life due to gas poisoning after delivering a letter to Commander Raynal at Fort Vaux.

The Paris Animaux Zoopolis Association, a French animal rights organization, recognizes the significant contribution of these animals during the first world war and with that, pushes for commemoration. Initially, the organization’s plans were rejected. But because they continued their campaign for the memorial, Paris City Hall finally approved their plan.

As of today, there is still no final answer as to where the location of the memorial will be. The president of Paris Animaux Zoopolis Association hopes that it will be on avenue de l’Observatoire in the 6th arrondissement due to its historical importance.

More Support Animals in Campuses: Why Do Students Need Them?

animals in campuses

It’s not uncommon to see animals accompanying their owners everywhere – public places like restaurants, malls, and buses. And yes – there has been a rise in the presence of animals inside campuses. The reason is that students deal with the stress of being in college. They may feel pressured into giving their best or deal with the financial burdens of schooling.

Many studies have demonstrated that animals help students in various ways. For example, students with social anxiety and depression are able to go out because they need to provide exercise for their animals. Also, a support animal can be the subject of conversations, which makes interaction easier. Students also turn out to become responsible individuals because of their animals.

It’s important to know the difference between a service animal and an emotional support animal. A service animal needs to be trained to perform certain tasks for its owner who cannot perform these tasks himself. Most service animals are dogs. On the other hand, emotional support animals don’t require special training – only a note from a medical professional that conveys the need of a person to have an ESA.

sa access rights

Question: Do service-animals-in-training have legal access rights to public spaces?

Answer: If you would like to take a service-animal-in-training out to public spaces, the ADA does not give you that legal right and it is up to local state, county or city laws or the individual business owner, employer, or landlord to grant you access rights for that animal that is still in training.

Emotional Support Animals as Treatment Options for Stress and Anxiety Disorders

esas for stress and anxiety

A 2017 report by the American Psychological Association states that more college students are seeking the help of counselors because of their stress and anxiety. Such news makes us realize that mental health problems are prevalent among colleges.

Some college students have benefited from the companion of emotional support animals. These ESAs were prescribed to them by licensed psychologists. ESAs can be anything from dogs to cats to hedgehogs. Dr. Joshua Klapow states that there is evidence that petting animals help reduce anxiety. Animals stabilize a person’s emotions and calm him down.

The problem is that not all universities welcome emotional support animals. There have been complaints of ESAs causing disruptions to classroom activities and because of that, these animals are no longer welcome. Therefore, it’s important that these animals receive proper training.

At the same time, educational institutions should update their laws regarding emotional support animals. School is supposed to be our second home, and ESAs make students’ experiences better.
