Question: Does a disabled owner of a therapy animal have rights to public access?

Senior Guide Dog Mobility Instructor Shares Her Meaningful Experience

experience with canines

Melanie Harris has been a volunteer puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) since the age of 9. The experience for her gave an unspoken understanding that she was bound to be a part of a calling that would change the lives of people for the better. Continuing as a volunteer throughout her life, it led her moving to GDB’s national headquarters in California.

“While my time as a childhood puppy raiser wasn’t all work, it provided a dog lover like me with immense joy on a daily basis, it did inform my adult view of the importance of dogs and humans working as part of a unit that is stronger than its individual parts.”

Harris nowadays works as a Senior Guide Dog Mobility Instructor training dogs to help other people in need especially for those who are visually impaired. But, along with her colleagues, they get dismayed that guide dogs are misperceived as emotional support dogs. So owners of ESAs shouldn’t represent theirs as service dogs as it leaves an undesired reputation for those in the guide dog community. Especially if animal misbehaves in a public or business setting.

Hurricane Florence Victims Receive Comfort from Canines

North Carolina is one of the states that got the most damage from Hurricane Florence and victims are being consoled by the presence of canines. Insurance companies and animal therapy organizations such as Allstate and the Alliance of Therapy Dogs have joined teams to make insurance claims comfortable for claimants as they recover from the devastating event.

A therapy dog owner such as Kellie Renzi, brought her dog Darcy to help comfort the victims of Hurricane Florence. She said, “I think we’ll see a lot of folks who are going through one of the worst times in their lives,” she said. “So bringing a sense of normalcy and all that with our dogs will provide comfort to them.”

Allstate spokesman Justin Herndon stated that therapy dogs have been a part of the company’s mobile commands operations since the wildfires that ravaged California. “You kind of learn what customers need and then evolve to that,” he said. “We found after the wildfires, which was a really emotional experience for a lot of families coming back to nothing, that something like therapy dogs might help.

Sure enough, it has.” The insurance company also plans to deploy a therapy dog at each of the 10 mobile operations at the affected North Carolina areas which include New Bern and Wilmington.

Animal Welfare Organization Founded by Couple Celebrates a Year of Service

PAW

Joey’s P.A.W. which stands for Prosthetics and Wheels was founded by the couples Tanya and Charlie Diable on August 2017. Their cause was to save dogs that have been victims of animal cruelty as well as providing money for canines that need custom prosthetics and wheelchairs. Tanya said, “Charlie and I have a heart for dogs that have been literally starved, abused, beaten, thrown away and for breeders wanting to kill them because they are unable to make a profit from them.”

They have adopted six dogs (Joey, Zoey, Temperance, Kingston, Harper, and Boone) with Joey as one of the inspirations in creating the organization. Joey had both rear legs intentionally severed at six weeks of age and received a donation of life-saving medical care plus prosthetics by Merrick Pet Care. The generous act prompted them to help other dogs in need.

“We rely on donations through fundraisers, and last year we raised more than $18,000,” she said. “People can donate online, and we cannot help those dogs in need without donations.” With more than 79 dogs plus a goat helped across the globe, the organization celebrates their first year of being in service.

Blind Veteran Avails His Own Service Dog With the Help of Others

blind veteran and labrador

Roy Sonne is a blind veteran from Ethan, South Dakota. After serving 5 years in the U.S. Army he was honorably discharged and became blind due to a medical condition where the retinas get detached from the eyes (according to his doctors). To gain back independence for his everyday life, Sonne applied to avail a service animal at the Veterans Benefits Administration Office in Sioux Falls. The process was slow and long and Sonne’s desire of having his own service animal never happened.

A service organization called Leader Dogs for the Blind held a two-day workshop with Craig Bennett as an attendee. Bennett who happened to be a veteran’s service officer in Mitchell met Sonne and helped him with the process to avail a service animal. “(Sonne) told me he had applied for a service dog through the Veterans Affairs office several years ago, but it had come to a stall,” Bennett said. “I was determined to help him with the application and the entire process.”

With help from Bennett and connections to the Palace City Lions Club (presided by Dennis Bohmont), Sonne was able to have Bryla, a 2-year-old black Labrador as his service dog.

What’s One Situation Where A Landlord Can Refuse To Accommodate An Assistance Animal?

chow chow

Question: What’s one situation where a landlord can refuse to accommodate an assistance animal?

Answer: The housing provider is allowed to refuse to accommodate the request for an Assistance Animal if it would cause an undue financial burden on the landlord or hotel operator. For example, accommodation would require extensive costs that would be considered objectively unreasonably high, such as physical alterations or construction.

Cats For Animal Assisted Therapy

cats for assistance animal

When it comes to animal-assisted therapy, dogs are widely recognized… even species like pigs, peacocks, llamas (and yes, other exotic animals). But what about cats? Cats don’t always get the attention they deserve because they’re difficult to train and that their temperament is unpredictable.

But today, more and more cat supporters attest to the benefits of having cats for animal-assisted therapy. Whether a handler is sick, needing comfort, or injured, cats can provide great help.

During training, cats should be able to go through a lot of grooming procedures and should tolerate a room that’s full of strangers. Cats should also tolerate a lot of hugs in order to qualify for registration.
