A Whole New Way to Experience Yoga

goat yoga

There’s a unique yoga trend in Rochester – goat yoga. Yoga instructor, Sarinna Fisher of Urban Yoga MN, thought of combining goats and yoga. While Tim Taylor, the provider of the goats, thinks that the idea is quite silly, he says that people enjoy the presence of these animals.

While yoga participants are doing their thing, 12 baby goats roam around and eat. This is some form of animal therapy, as the presence of these animals can be therapeutic.

3 Therapy Pups Comfort Patients with Hospital Visits

therapy pups at hospital

Biscotti, Renoir, and Mia are therapy pups that do their rounds at Adventist Health Simi Valley hospital during Mondays and Thursdays. Marie Rayburn, their owner and handler, visits each room and asks the patients if they would like a visit from the 3 therapy pups.

Rayburn had her pups certified by Therapy Dogs International – it’s a nonprofit organization that regulates, tests, and registers therapy dogs. Shirley Niell, the hospital’s communications manager, appreciates the presence of Rayburn’s therapy pups because she knows that patients can stay for a longer time. With the 3 furry friends around, time passes by quickly.

Rayburn says that she prepares Biscotti, Renoir, and Mia by bathing them and brushing their teeth. She also dresses them in seasonal outfits to attract patients. When the 3 pups are doing their duty, people are not allowed to feed them – only praise them.

Training in the Animal World

animal training

Shawn Flowers talks about animal training after Koko, a western lowland gorilla, died. He mentions Operant Conditioning, a learning process coined by BF Skinner, where actions that are reinforced by rewards and punishments are strengthened and weakened. Rewards and punishments are effective means of helping you meet your goals for the animal.

When it comes to dogs, house training is the first thing to do. Never reprimand your dog when he goes inside your house, but lead him outside and reward him. To promote good behavior especially when guests are around, make sure to teach your dogs to sit, come, and stay.

The aspect of service dogs is another one that requires rigorous training. Service dogs aid disabled people (such as blind people) to avoid obstacles when walking. There are also service dogs that detect the onset of a seizure or sudden changes in blood sugar.

Should Passengers Purchase Extra Seats for Their Service Animals?

seats for service animals

Question: Should passengers purchase extra seats for their service animals?

Answer: The airline may not require that the passenger purchase an extra seat unless the animal will not fit in the immediate seating area, lap, or under-seat storage area of the passenger. For example, a Great Dane might be denied cabin space unless an additional seat is purchased. However, if the flight happens to be fairly empty and there is a lot of space available, the passenger may not purchase an additional seat.

How Can Gear Be Useful to Service Animal Owners?

gear for service animals

Question: How can gear be useful to service animal owners?

Answer: Gear is sometimes desired by an owner in situations where it will short-cut conversations or help prevent misunderstandings in public spaces. For example, if a dog is wearing a shirt which states “Medical Alert Service Animal,” then the disabled owner/handler might avoid having to explain his or her animal’s status when visiting public spaces such as restaurants.

Can a Housing Provider Ask Detailed Medical Questions About the Assistance Animal?

medical questions assistance animal

Question: Can a housing provider ask detailed medical questions about the assistance animal?

Answer: No. While it was mentioned that housing providers and commercial airlines can request reasonable evidence of the resident’s need for the assistance animal, such as a medical professional’s note, the housing provider may not ask detailed medical questions which would be an invasion of privacy rights.

Can a Housing Provider Refuse an Assistance Animal for Financial Reasons?

dog assistance animal

Question: Can a housing provider refuse an assistance animal for financial reasons?

Answer: Yes. The housing provider can refuseefuse to accommodate the request for an assistance animal if it would cause an undue financial burden on the landlord or hotel operator. For example, if the landlord’s insurance carrier would cancel the insurance policy if a certain breed of dog, such as a pit bull or chow breed, were kept on the premises, or if the accommodation would require extensive costs that would be considered objectively unreasonably high, such as physical alterations or construction.

Woman from Raleigh Saves 25 Dogs from China

dogs saved from china

To Valerie Curran, animals are precious. She works with the global animal rescue group, No Dogs Left Behind, and was able to raise $20,000 and save dogs from China.

Curran mentions China’s Yulin festival where 10,000 dogs are being killed. She learned that China has a very different perspective about animals and that the people there feel that the more suffering that’s inflicted, the tastier the meat.

Successful in her endeavor, Curran was able to save 25 dogs from the shelter. She wants more dogs to be saved as they help us with therapy, the military, and do search and rescue.
