Military Members Sign Petition for United Airlines to Exempt Them from Pet Transport Ban

united airlines service animals

If you can recall, United Airlines made changes in their policy after an unfortunate incident spread on social media – a French bulldog died in their cargo compartment as they flew the dog to the wrong destination.

The carrier’s new policy which would take effect on June 18 states that they would no longer allow dogs with short noses fly in their cargo hold (these animals will find it harder to breathe in confined spaces). However, passengers can still bring such breeds as long as their carrier can fit under the seat.

Military family members have expressed their concerns over the new policy. Some families are living in another country and cannot imagine how they can fly their service dogs home. So far, United Airlines has been their main US-based carrier that offers lower rates. Other airlines allow larger breeds but tend to be more expensive.

According to United Airlines, they’ll be allowing military families to book reservations but only after their new policy takes effect.

Service Dogs in Training Comfort Students During Finals

service dogs in training visit students

It’s no secret that finals can be a time of pressure for students in college. Thanks to an organization that trains service dogs Dogs and Dawgs, Southern Illinois University Carbondale students get to experience the benefits of having service dogs around.

Actually, Dogs and Dawgs will be taking puppies undergoing training (to become service dogs) to the college so that the students can meet them. So, on May 4, these service dogs become therapy dogs just for a day.

The benefit of this occasion is that the students can de-stress by playing with the puppies. At the same time, the puppies get to learn to be around people until they become fully-trained service dogs.

Michael and his wife have been living in their apartment for 14 years and having to move out is a difficult decision. However, Michael says that if his service dog has to go, then he and his wife should go as well. They’re not leaving Princess alone.

What Is the First Step When Making an Accommodation Request for Your Service Animal?

accommodation request service animal

Question: What is the first step when making an accommodation request for your service animal?
Answer: If you would like to request an accommodation from the airline, the first step is to let the airline know that you would like to request that your assistance animal travel with you as a reasonable accommodation for your disability. It can be done verbally when you check in for your flight. However, it is best to do this in writing so that you have evidence of how and when you made your request.

By giving the ticket agent a written document instead of needing to have a longer conversation, you can also help preserve your privacy, since you are speaking in a public area where your conversation may be overheard by others.

Do Therapy Animals Have Rights to Public Access, Travel, and Housing Accommodations?

therapy animals rights

Question: Do therapy animals have rights to public access, travel, and housing accommodations?

Answer: Because Therapy Animals are not covered by ADA disability laws, FHAA fair housing laws, or Federal transportation regulations, owners of Therapy Animals do not have the following rights associated with their therapy animals:

No rights to public access. Each location must agree to have the therapy animal visit, but is not obligated to grant access unless it wants to.

No right to accompany its owner on commercial flights. The animal can travel with its owner following the general rules for pets but does not have any special rights under ADA or transportation regulations.

No right for housing accommodations by landlords and hotels. The animal would be treated as an ordinary pet when it comes to housing, and a landlord or hotel can impose whatever restrictions it has in place for pets.

Traveling with Your Animal? Make Sure You Know Airline Rules

animals on airlines

If you haven’t heard of the tragic event that transpired in a United Airlines flight, a puppy died after the flight attendant insisted that it be placed in the overhead bin.

Events such as these push airline companies to impose rules when it comes to allowing emotional support animals on a plane. After all, people with disabilities benefit from these animals’ help and therefore need their companionship even when they travel.

Nowadays, the number of people that fly with emotional support animals has drastically increased. They’re bringing various animals such as peacocks, boa constrictors, ducks, and ostriches.

If you plan on bringing an animal with you on a flight, make sure that you legitimately need it. Or else, you’re only going to make things difficult for those who are truly disabled.
