Therapy Dog Helps Grade Schoolers Improve Their Reading Skills

therapy animal helps students read

Would you believe that a therapy dog could help children read better? There have been stories of therapy dogs encouraging kids to read, and Arthur is one of these great dogs. Arthur is part of the “Tail Waggin’ Tutors” reading program offered by Therapy Dogs International, a non-profit organization.

Arthur helped several students at Sioux Trail Elementary. Layla Larsen, a fourth-grade student, admits that her voice used to shake when she reads. But because she constantly reads to Arthur and actually enjoys the experience, she became more confident.

Marianne Bundy and Tahir Peterson are fifth-graders who’ve also benefited from Arthur’s help. They said that Arthur definitely gave them a comfortable elementary experience.

In the “Tail Waggin’ Tutors program, teachers get to choose at least 6 students a day to read to one of their dogs. A therapy dog like Arthur would just sit and offer a friendly ear to the reader. For Arthur, he rewards the kids with a paw or hug. The kids also offer Arthur a treat.

Service Dogs Have Been Around for Centuries but They’re Still Being Questioned

service dogs should be respected

Disabled individuals who show no overt signs of disability continue to face challenges as they’re being discriminated because of their service dogs. Although service dogs have existed since the 18 century and helped people with their disabilities, they don’t get the respect they deserve.

For example, smaller breeds create doubt in the minds of people just because of their size. Because the first thing that individuals think of when it comes to service dogs is that the dog must be large. Let’s say a german shepherd or a labrador retriever.

Service dogs have assisted not just World War I veterans but also children affected with autism. The American with Disabilities Act was even amended in 2010 to mention service dogs for people who show no obvious signs of a disability.

Take note that service dogs differ from emotional support dogs. Service dogs do specific tasks that range from opening doors to calming their owners down when they’re about to have an anxiety attack.

People, in general, need to judge service dogs less. Service dogs are for all disabled individuals and it doesn’t matter if these people are well-off or have overt disabilities.

Army Veteran Helps Us Identify Real Service Dogs

how to distinguish service dogs

Kevin Jankoski is an army veteran and at the same time a qualified service dog trainer. He owns Blitz, a service dog whom he asks to perform various tasks for him such as turning on the lights, acting as his cane, and picking up the keys.

Nowadays, Jankoski is helping the staff at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center identify between a real service dog versus a fake service dog. He says that one can tell based on a dog’s behavior because training makes all the difference.

For example, a real service dog like Blitz focuses his/her attention on the owner. A real service dog knows that he/she always has a job to do. On the other hand, it’s likely that dogs aren’t really service dogs when they don’t have a collar, fail to obey commands, and are simply roaming around the hospital.

Jankoski emphasizes that a dog that is not behaving well may also happen to be a service dog that is still in training.

More Hospitals Seek Therapy Dogs for Support

bailey and owner

Although the effectiveness of therapy animals lacks more scientific evidence, still these animals are highly demanded by people. It’s not uncommon to hear stories of patients claiming that they feel better after interacting with a therapy dog. As a matter of fact, University of Minnesota hospitals expect more therapy dogs to walk their halls.

Therapy dog Bailey has served the University for 3 years. She pays the students a visit 5 timer per week to provide support and joy. Holly Parker, Bailey’s owner, states that the companionship of animals reminds people of home. She added that the hospital staff loves Bailey and not just the patients.

honor service dog

Honor is a golden retriever and she happens to be a service dog. But unlike regular service dogs, Honor was born without metacarpals. So instead, she wears a prosthetic paw. Yet this does not stop her from bringing happiness to the people she visits.

On Memorial Day, Honor got the chance to visit one VA hospital in Oklahoma. Jim Baker who’s a veteran and hospital patient appreciates Honor for being so devoted. He says that the service dog isn’t aware that she has a disability. Baker also tells KTUL-TV that Honor made him very happy.

Animals Are Becoming a Prescription for Wellness

animals for wellness

In a world where people are constantly faced with stress, animals can be the best solution that improves the quality of their lives. Marlowe Evans, a student at Thomas Haney, is a proud owner of animals.

She has 2 cats, 1 horse, 1 dog, and a multitude of fishes. Evans expresses her deep appreciation for these creatures and believes that we are naturally drawn to animals simply because we need to socialize. A specific example that shows how animals are important to our existence is cats being worshipped by the Egyptians.

In fact, a lot of universities in Canada introduce their students to therapy dogs during exam season. There are also therapy programs that allow children and adults with problems to spend time with horses. Pets teach us the meaning of responsibility and appreciate life and death.

Although pets require effort, they’re worth your while. Evans wishes that it were the same with humans.
