Comfort Dogs Can Accompany Witnesses in Pennsylvania Criminal Trials

judge and law

The Supreme Court has ruled that Pennsylvania judges can now allow witnesses to be accompanied by comfort dogs when testifying in court during criminal trials. This decision started when a witness with autism used an emotional support dog to take a stand in a murder trial.

This ruling comes with a condition: The animal must not interfere with the defendant’s right to a fair trial. There are defense attorneys that argue that having a dog beside a witness can make the jury sympathetic to the testifying person and creating a prejudice against the defendant.

One strategy that counters this argument is to hide the dog on the witness stand during the trial. This was done during a Chester County murder case and has proven that the use of comfort dogs does not influence a jury’s decision.

Pennsylvania now joins Maryland, Michigan, Virginia, and Connecticut as one of the states that permits the use of comfort dogs in their courtrooms.

The Benefits of Goat Therapy

goat

We all know that dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, and even Llamas make good therapy animal candidates. But did you know that goats can also provide us with therapeutic benefits? In the case of Heleene Green, she has always loved goats since she was young and saw the healing powers capric animals could give just by companionship.

She even embraced the moniker of “goat girl” during her younger years. A regular visitor of Heleene and her parent’s 12-acre farm said, “They [the goats] bring back a joy that we just don’t have today. When you come to watch the goats play, it’s just a relief from the crazy world we live in.”

To visit Heleene’s goats for a therapy session, find Green’s Friendship Acres in Vernon, Wisconsin, or contact them on Facebook for directions and advanced bookings.

Ashleigh and Tayla Gilson have both loved animals ever since they were children. Tayla became a vet nurse and also had working experience in the pet supply industry. This made her and Ashleigh the perfect duo of starting a backyard online store.

“Now, with Covid-19, I’ve noticed people like to shop online and want the option for contactless deliveries. We’re planning to be open at local markets and events as well and a delivery service around Bundaberg to get us going,” said Ashleigh.

From their store, All Fur Pets, you can talk to the twins for advice on your furry friend’s wellbeing. They also have all the things you’ll need for pet care. Their inventory ranges from enrichment toys and specialist food to medications. Visit the Gilson sisters’ site for more details.

Therapy Dogs Distract Wildfire Crews From Stress

Fighting fire is already challenging enough as a fireman. It’s even more difficult when we’re talking about massive infernos like wildfires. Fortunately, the crews who’ve been keeping the California fires at bay are receiving massive emotional and mental health support.

Although not in the form of crowds cheering from the streets, the firefighters receive their spiritual boost as they were graced by the presence of therapy dogs. Kevin Brown, a crewmember that has been on the frontline for 11 days said, “The moment we pull into the SCU base camp, Micah was waiting for us. It was the perfect thing that we needed to get us that disconnect from all of that hard work and revamp us before we were about to start a whole ‘nother level of work on a brand new fire.”

Meet Rose, An Upcoming District Attorney Office Comfort Dog

Witnesses and victims of crime or domestic violence suffer traumatizing experiences that mostly change their lives for the worst. This is evident during a talk with a legal counsel in an office or when one makes a testimony in court.

Not only that but even the staff of a legal institution are also at risk of stress and anxieties due to the nature of their work. That’s why the victim-witness unit of Marietta, Georgia’s District Attorney’s Office worked hard to make Rose, a 3-year-old Black Lab, part of their team.

Unit Director, Kimberly McCoy, said, “The level of stress and anxiety that victims of domestic violence experience is drastically reduced with the introduction of assistance animals.” Despite the long process to acquire Rose, the staff of the Marietta DA is very excited to welcome her.

NBC’s Campaign Helped Pets Find Their Forever Homes

A lot of Santa Barbara County residents adopted furry friends from local animal shelters as a result of NBC’s “Clear the Shelters” campaign. The campaign, which is a one-month event, helped 55 pets find their forever homes.

It started on August 23, 2021, and ended on September 20, 2021. Thirty dogs, seventeen cats, six rabbits, one guinea pig, and one rooster were adopted. The animals came from the Santa Barbara County Animal Services Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP), Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (BUNS), Santa Barbara Humane – Santa Maria Campus, Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, and Dog Adoption and Welfare Group (DAWG).

If you didn’t get the chance to adopt a pet during the one-month campaign, you can still contact the Santa Barbara County Animal Services’ website for inquiries.

Chicago Animal Shelter Sees an Increase in Pets Being Surrendered Due to the Return to Normalcy

dog in shelter

One good thing about the pandemic is that it helped save a lot of animals from rescues and shelters because a lot of us were in need of a companion during the lockdowns. But now we’re going back to our pre-pandemic life, a lot of pets adopted due to the pandemic are now being returned to the shelters of where they came from.

“You have a full-time job, a social life, you can leave home and still be foster, volunteer, or adopt a pet. When we get back to normal, we shouldn’t stop thinking that people can engage in this,” said Jennifer Schluter from the Municipal Care and Management of Animals in Chicago.

If you can afford to care for and feed your adopted pets, it might be best to get a nanny for them. If you’re struggling to keep your companion animal well-fed, you can ask for help from pet pantries. Choosing to stand by your decision to give an animal a forever home is a huge help to other fur babies because this allows other shelters to house new rescues.

A Walk For Service Dogs

dog parade

Pets and owners alike of Madison, Wisconsin have gone on a walk at McGaw Park in Fitchburg to fundraise a non-profit organization for the training of service dogs. The event is held annually by the Wisconsin Academy for Graduate Service Dogs (WAGS).

80 people attended the walk for a cause. Aaron Backer, executive director of WAGS said, “That’s how we support our budget every year is donations from the community, so this is one of the ways we raise money but help introduce people to service dogs and how they help people.”

The organization has partnered more than 200 service dogs to people with physical disabilities. They are also looking for more volunteers to train the newly-received Golden Retriever puppies.

Here’s A Guide On Creating a Care Plan for Your Pet As We Go Back to Normal

walking doggo

We cannot deny the fear of COVID-19’s possible emergence of new variants. But we also cannot deny that we are slowly returning to our normal lives. What others don’t realize is that the ones who will be negatively hit by the return to normalcy are our companion animals.

Kallie Milleman, a spokesperson for the OSPCA Ontario, said, “There’s no doubt that our pets have played an important role in our lives during these last 17 months. As we return to a post-pandemic life, not only are we adjusting, so are our pets are too.”

It’s important to take time and train our furry companions to feel confident and safe as they’re left alone in our homes while we work. These include storing a month’s worth of emergency pet food and setting a schedule to let them have outdoor exposure.
