New Program: Farm Animals for Psychotherapy

equine therapy

There’s a new program started by the 35-acre farm on Old Fall River Road in Dartmouth. This is an equine therapy program that’s meant to help people who are suffering from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and addiction.

Andrew Lapin, the program’s lead clinical director, knows that horses make great equalizers. Licensed mental health counselor Deb Madera assists Lapin. Some of the horses in the program were a big brown horse named Ruby and a white horse named Freckles. Aside from the horses, there were also other animals — two ponies and an alpaca.

Q&A: How can I train my puppy to become a therapy dog?

puppy training

The first step is to consider whether your puppy is a good candidate. He or she should enjoy being touched by strangers, is friendly towards all kinds of people, and can remain calm in any situation.

If your puppy has these qualities, you can start training him or her in preparation for the future. Some behavior training ideas you can try include the following:

  •  Sit politely to allow a stranger to pet him/her
  • Sit down on command and remain in place
  • Come when called
  • Walk through a crowd without reacting negatively to anyone
  • Behave well even if they’re away from you for a short time

Q&A: Can any dog be a therapy dog?

therapy dog qualification

You may see your dog as a great, loving companion, but that doesn’t mean he or she can immediately qualify as a therapy animal. Here’s what you should know:

Certified therapy dogs can be of any breed. They can be Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, and more. However, your dog needs to be friendly and affectionate even to strangers, and pass an obedience test. According to the AKC, “A dog who can’t leave it on cue or interact with children in a friendly manner will not succeed.”

A Temporary Substitute For Therapy Animals

toy dog

Compassionate Paws and Pet Partners have been bringing smiles to people since 2007. They bring animals (such as cats and dogs) to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. But because of COVID restrictions, their activities have been canceled.

Jan Greene of Compassionate Paws said that she’s upset that they can no longer serve the community like they used to. But the good news is, they’ve found a temporary solution: Take stuffed animals instead! Even Greene’s daughter wanted to help out by donating some of her stuffed animals.

On July 14, they were able to pay the residents a visit. The residents were appreciative of the effort and chose what stuffed animal they liked.

Swimming Mammals With Special Missions

bottlenose dolphin

Did you know that the US has “swimming soldiers” that are as trained as the Navy SEALS? While we have service dogs on land, we also have heroes that live underwater. These are sea lions and bottlenose dolphins.

The Navy’s Marine Mammal Program makes use of these mammals to perform underwater missions like naval mine detection, harbor patrol, and rescues. Both species have the ability to track targets even in dark waters — without the risk of decompression sickness.

Service Dogs For Veterans: What’s Their Most Important Job?

veteran

Service dogs assist people in many ways depending on what they’re trained to do. When it comes to veterans, can you guess what their most important task is? The answer is disrupting anxiety. A lot of veterans live with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), a mental health problem that people develop after experiencing traumatic events.

Kerri Rodriguez, Ph.D, says that service dogs that are trained to assist with PTSD can wake a veteran from nightmares, alert him to anxiety, and be a reliable companion in crowds. She adds, “It’s not uncommon to hear veterans talk about how they wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for their service dog, or how their service dog has allowed them to become a husband and father again.”

Q&A: Who is responsible for caring for and meeting a service animal’s needs?

meeting dogs needs

Answer: According to the ADA, the handler of the service animal is the one responsible for its care and supervision. This includes the animal’s food, grooming, vet care, and toileting needs. The ADA states specifically, “Covered entities are not obligated to supervise or otherwise care for a service animal.”

Q&A: I have a dog that can calm me down. Can it qualify as a Service Animal?

can it be a service dog

You may have an amazing dog that currently provides you with emotional support. Specifically, it calms you down when you feel anxious. Now, you’re wondering if your dog can be labeled as a service animal.

Here’s what you need to know…

Answer: According to the ADA, service animals that provide mere emotional support or comfort alone do not qualify as Service Animals, unless the animal’s assistance consists of a task it is trained to perform or work it physically does. For example, if the dog has been trained to sense an anxiety attack and takes a specific action to lessen its impact. Again, training is the key requirement.

What You Should Know About Getting A Siberpoo

siberpoo

Yes, there is a crossbreed between a Siberian Husky and Poodle (any of the three types). We call this breed a Husky Poodle mix or “Siberpoo” for short. One interesting fact about this dog is that it makes a great therapy and emotional support companion. They’re described as loving, intelligent, and extremely active.

However, caution should be taken as well since these dogs are not suitable for apartment living, senior citizens, and small children. When it comes to a Siberpoo’s exercise needs, these dogs do well with at least 1 hour of exercise daily.

The Scoob actress Amada Seyfried understands the relationship that man and animals share. She describes it as “extraordinary.” She’s no stranger to stress, and the way she copes with it is spending time lying with her dog Finn in bed. A moment of peace is sometimes all she needs.

Aside from Finn, the actress also talks about her rescue donkey named Gus. She likens Gus to a dog, and even describes him as having a very calm energy. Amanda expresses her gratitude about her daughter being able to grow up with such amazing animals.
