Local Vet Helps War Heroes and Their Furry Companions

vet helps furry friends

Dr. Mike Moore of Southside Animal Hospital has a personal mission to help war heroes and their service animals. One of the people that Dr. Moore helped was Niroby Wilson. Wilson served the US. In 2004, he suffered from a serious injury that almost led to paralysis. But he also needed additional help since his 12-year-old service dog Kimbo also required surgery.

Dr. Moore introduced Wilson to the Hank’s & Eli’s Fund which he created back in 2012. “If anything, I would tell Doc and them that I love him, because they saved my baby,” said Wilson.

A New Process On Finding Forever Homes for Animals

finding new home for animals

When the pandemic happened, many government buildings were closed. Forsyth County Animal Shelter, for example. However, the shelter has started to follow a new adoption method where a “matchmaking” will be done between a person and an animal.

Cindy Lacopella, the shelter’s manager, said that this new process reduces the chances of spreading the virus between employees. Also, the adoption is now more personalized since an animal’s personality will be matched with the adopters.

New Program: Farm Animals for Psychotherapy

equine therapy

There’s a new program started by the 35-acre farm on Old Fall River Road in Dartmouth. This is an equine therapy program that’s meant to help people who are suffering from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and addiction.

Andrew Lapin, the program’s lead clinical director, knows that horses make great equalizers. Licensed mental health counselor Deb Madera assists Lapin. Some of the horses in the program were a big brown horse named Ruby and a white horse named Freckles. Aside from the horses, there were also other animals — two ponies and an alpaca.

Q&A: How can I train my puppy to become a therapy dog?

puppy training

The first step is to consider whether your puppy is a good candidate. He or she should enjoy being touched by strangers, is friendly towards all kinds of people, and can remain calm in any situation.

If your puppy has these qualities, you can start training him or her in preparation for the future. Some behavior training ideas you can try include the following:

  •  Sit politely to allow a stranger to pet him/her
  • Sit down on command and remain in place
  • Come when called
  • Walk through a crowd without reacting negatively to anyone
  • Behave well even if they’re away from you for a short time

Q&A: Can any dog be a therapy dog?

therapy dog qualification

You may see your dog as a great, loving companion, but that doesn’t mean he or she can immediately qualify as a therapy animal. Here’s what you should know:

Certified therapy dogs can be of any breed. They can be Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, and more. However, your dog needs to be friendly and affectionate even to strangers, and pass an obedience test. According to the AKC, “A dog who can’t leave it on cue or interact with children in a friendly manner will not succeed.”

A Temporary Substitute For Therapy Animals

toy dog

Compassionate Paws and Pet Partners have been bringing smiles to people since 2007. They bring animals (such as cats and dogs) to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. But because of COVID restrictions, their activities have been canceled.

Jan Greene of Compassionate Paws said that she’s upset that they can no longer serve the community like they used to. But the good news is, they’ve found a temporary solution: Take stuffed animals instead! Even Greene’s daughter wanted to help out by donating some of her stuffed animals.

On July 14, they were able to pay the residents a visit. The residents were appreciative of the effort and chose what stuffed animal they liked.

Swimming Mammals With Special Missions

bottlenose dolphin

Did you know that the US has “swimming soldiers” that are as trained as the Navy SEALS? While we have service dogs on land, we also have heroes that live underwater. These are sea lions and bottlenose dolphins.

The Navy’s Marine Mammal Program makes use of these mammals to perform underwater missions like naval mine detection, harbor patrol, and rescues. Both species have the ability to track targets even in dark waters — without the risk of decompression sickness.

Service Dogs For Veterans: What’s Their Most Important Job?

veteran

Service dogs assist people in many ways depending on what they’re trained to do. When it comes to veterans, can you guess what their most important task is? The answer is disrupting anxiety. A lot of veterans live with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), a mental health problem that people develop after experiencing traumatic events.

Kerri Rodriguez, Ph.D, says that service dogs that are trained to assist with PTSD can wake a veteran from nightmares, alert him to anxiety, and be a reliable companion in crowds. She adds, “It’s not uncommon to hear veterans talk about how they wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for their service dog, or how their service dog has allowed them to become a husband and father again.”
