Police Dog’s First Day at the Job Has Ended in a Spectacular Success

police dog

Just before the midday of August 1, 2020, Max was called into duty by the Dyfed-Powys Police. The two-year-old mixed German Shepherd’s first assignment is to track down a lost mother and child.

The mother, along with her one-year-old child went to spend a night in a remote location at Powys, Wales. Inspector Jonathan Rees-Jones said, “The woman had not been seen or spoken to for two days, which was out of character, and her phone wasn’t working, so naturally concern for her safety was high”

The search ended at 1:30 pm after both PC Peter Lloyd, Max’s handler, and Max spotted the missing woman through scent. She was waving for help near a steep ravine on a mountainside. The baby and mother were found safe but the baby was cold. They were checked out by the paramedics and made a complete recovery.

A New Study Shows Owning a Pet During Quarantine Helps in Keeping a Healthy Routine

A social media content company called Fullscreen, surveyed individuals aged 18-37. 62% of the participants shared that the pandemic has caused them stress by disrupting their daily routines. According to the data, owning a four-legged furry as a companion and something to take care of is a new “meaningful routine”.

This has motivated them to be positive while staying at home and has made them less worried about the future. Drew, a cat-owner and one of the participants who is based in Brooklyn said, “I often think about how they have no knowledge of all the chaos going on in the world, and it’s a nice escape.” If you’re looking for a reason to adopt a pet, now is the perfect time to.

Things That Separate Doctor Dogs From Human Doctors

a dog on a chair

Human doctors are professionals but even for healthy people like us, every time we visit the clinic, there’s always this sense of worry we have. The doctor dogs from Taiwan, however, are different. Bed-ridden patients have claimed to have their mood improved just by being graced by the presence of a therapy dog. And, every session with a doctor dog is something they look forward to.

The program called Formosa Animal-Assisted Activity and Therapy Association has trained over 500 doctor dogs for more than two decades. Its goal is to provide animal-assisted therapies for children and elders who are receiving rehabilitative treatment.

The association’s chairman, Collier Chang (張泮崇), said, “Concerned with the rising number of abandoned dogs in Taiwan, Shirley Chen (陳秀宜), the founder of the association, also included stray dogs in her training program, giving the animals a second chance to foster a close relationship with humans.”

Olive was picked up by animal control infested with fleas, ticks while being hungry and dirty. Brandon McMillan however, took her out of the shelter’s cage as he saw something. He trained Olive to be a unique therapy dog for the Therapy Dog category of the Hero Dog Award by the American Humane Association.

Olive provides comfort to testifying children in court that are frightened and traumatized by abuse. As part of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), she has comforted more than three hundred abused and neglected children. With the children’s anxiety eased up and their nerves calmed in court, this dog has become a hero and changed these kids’ lives. Each contestant of the Hero Dog Award has its sponsor. Olive’s sponsor is the World Pet Association.

How Assistance Dogs Help Those With Autism

kid and dog

There are different types of assistance dogs with each training that caters to every individual’s special needs. For service dogs, they can help by stopping their owners from entering seizure-inducing environments and have rights to enter public spaces.

Therapy dogs don’t have the same rights to enter public places but they are trained to be calm in new places and calm their owners in stressful situations. For example, if the person with autism has entered a public area and is having a panic attack, the therapy dog will get closer to the person for them to hug and calm down.

Emotional support dogs are more kept to help people with less-severe autism symptoms like developing social skills but can also perform the duties therapy dogs do. They aren’t certified by the Americans with Disabilities Act but can be vouched by doctors or licensed therapists for individuals who need emotional support.

COVID-19 Sniffing Dogs Might be the Next New Thing

dog sniffing

We’ve known canines are trainable to detect anything. From sniffing illegal and dangerous items into signaling incoming seizures, they have proved to be efficient detecting agents. For the service animals at Paradise Dog Training in Fenton, Michigan, a new detection training regiment is in place for COVID-19 detection.

As part of the virus-detection training, the dogs are presented by 10-15 buckets. In each of the buckets is a cotton ball soaked with spit. Some of these cotton balls have the SARS-CoV-2 virus and others don’t.

Lori and Jack Grigg train the dogs daily and claim that two of their dogs have a 75-85% success rate of detecting an infection. “It’s a whole lot quicker way of getting tested and getting quicker results,” said Lori.

This Boy Needs Your Help to Get A Service Dog

boy and dog love

“Usually he goes to sleep and a lot of the times, he wakes up and doesn’t even know what happened,” said Mari Kinsey. She refers to her son Braxton, a 7-year-old who got diagnosed with epilepsy last January.

The episodes come after every two months. Mari and Braxton just want to know when an episode will actually be coming so they can be prepared. Another reason is also to let Braxton have a companion in case no one is immediately around when the episode happens.

Because of this, Mari did some research and found Zen Dog Training. But, a service dog can cost $7-50,000. The owner of the training company, Lola Carter, offered to give them a discount. With $4,600 as the final charge, the Kinsey family is raising money to give Braxton the seizure alert companion that he deserves.

Alpaca Care Helps With Mentally-Troubled German Convicts

alpaca in stable

At the Mainkofen Psychiatric Hospital in Bavaria, looking after a small Alpaca herd is used as therapy for convicts with mental-issues. The therapy’s purpose is to help the patients develop social skills for societal reintegration.

One of the patients, Erwin Meier – named changed for confidentiality purposes, has been taking care of the Alpacas since October last year. Part of the Alpaca herd-caring tasks are cleaning their stables, walking them around, brushing their coats, and dressing their wounds.

“I used to get angry quite quickly, I was impulsive, but it’s improved thanks to the animals because if I get angry, they get angry too, and the calmer I am, the calmer they are too,” Said Meier.
