Indian Police Cause Trouble for Pet Owners and Vet Clinic Staffs

dog street

Navi Mumbai, India – A dog in need of veterinary help has died as a result of local police refusing to provide an essential service pass to its owner thrice. Even veterinarians and clinic staff are prohibited from going to work.

Not only that, but both pet owners and clinic staff face opposition from local residents before they can reach clinics. “My society has said that if I go out, I must not come back in. I have two cats at home. How can I not come back?” said Dharvesh Yadav, a para vet working in a clinic at Andheri who hasn’t reported for the past 4 days.

Idaho Pound Continues to Receive Care Amidst COVID-19 Crisis

idaho pound

Pocatello Animal Services Director Josh Heinz reassures the public that there are still four employees looking after the animals in the pound. The animals supposed to be endangered without care are receiving the same treatment as before.

The shelter had been closed to the public to help stop the spread of COVID-1 and pet adoptions are being forbidden in the meantime. Aside from the animals receiving care as they did before, the pound and its staff members still respond to calls of picking up stray animals made by the public.

An exception to this is that the pound will not take in trapped stray animals and strongly advises local residents to cease trapping amidst the pandemic.

Pet Parade Lightens Up Mood for Isolated Residents

pet parade

Port Lavaca, Texas – Local community members volunteered their time along with their pets to help cheer the local neighborhood isolated in their homes due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

When news arrived that seniors who were residents are isolated in their rooms at local living facilities due to the outbreak, community members and neighbors decided to get together to provide smiles and make other isolated community members happy.

“I started brainstorming things that could be done to help, such as putting bird feeders and yard art outside their windows,” said Veronica Koliba. “Then the thought of a pet parade just popped in my head that other than family, who or what would bring joy and smiles to anyone’s face?  Duh, animals.”

Are Pets Supposed to be Tested for COVID-19?

pets covid 19 testing

In Belgium, a cat had diarrhea, experienced vomiting, and difficulty breathing after being infected with COVID-19 from its owner who traveled from Northern Italy.

On that same day, Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department released a report of a 17-year-old Pomeranian that was initially tested “weak positive” for SARS-CoV-2 yielded results confirming COVID-19 infection.

This raises the question of “Should pets be tested for COVID-19?” to avoid the spread of infection to humans and other animals.

Timothy Baszler, Executive Director of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) says that “Even though we have no evidence that pets can transmit the virus, we desperately need [more] evidence one way or the other.”

In Franksville, Wisconsin, Stepping Stone Farms hopes to help first responders and frontline healthcare workers by easing their stresses from the battle of flattening the COVID-19 curve.

As part of the inclusion for the social distancing measure, frontliners and first responders who think about visiting the farm are required to contact the first for scheduling a 30-60 minute period of decompression and therapy.

Part of the “get away from it all” experience is to wander the paths at the farm, feed the chickens, pet the therapy horses and other farm animals. The farm’s executive director Lia Sader states that studies show that “Fresh outside air and human-animal interaction significantly reduces physiological anxiety levels.”

Benefits of Having a Pet for the Elderly

benefits of pets for seniors

Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal stimulates movement. This gives seniors a reason to wake up and face the day compared to their peers without pets, which means a feeling of purpose.

Altered focus: “Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging” – Penny B. Donnenfeld, a New York-based Psychologist.

Pets provide and help in maintaining a daily routine: Having a structure to follow during and after retirement is important to ward off the risk of depression. The routine of feeding, grooming and providing other pet needs can also help prevent cognitive decline which is common among seniors.
