Georgetown Teen Trains Puppy For Service

teen trains service animal

Mia Federico trains Mochi for Service Animal Graduation in February 2021. This idea started when her mother, Ellen Federico thought of her dog-loving daughter when she saw an ad online. Shortly after, Ellen and Mia met Mochi the Retriever-Mix on September 27, 2019. Since then, the Federicos volunteered for Canine Companions for Independence.

They liked the organization because it offers trained dogs to individuals in need for free. Other organizations give service animals for the cost of $10,000-$15,000 each. Mia grooms and brushes Mochi’s teeth daily along with two 30-minute sessions of training. Mia says, “I can imagine that the most rewarding part would be [the dog] graduating and seeing them with their new person”.

Missouri On A Step Closer to Punishing Fake Service Animal Owners

fake service animal

As St. Charles Republican, Rep. Chrissy Sommer ends her term, eight years of her work comes to fruition. Senate Bill 644 puts the person guilty of a misdemeanor if found misrepresenting a dog as a service animal just for the purpose of receiving accommodations under the ADA and the Fair Housing Act.

Impersonating a person with a disability and misrepresenting a service animal will be managed by Missouri’s Commission on Human Rights. Members of the Missouri House voted 137-6 for a decision to send Gov. Mike Parson this proposed law and last March the legislation moved through the Senate with a 28-1 vote. “I am so happy and proud to eventually get this passed,” Rep. Sommer said.

New York Veterinarian Passes from COVID-19 Infection

veterinarian passes

Harlem pet owner communities and neighbors are in mourning of the passing of Dr. Julie Butler. Growing up in New Rochelle, Dr. Butler earned her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University. She was the only African American in her class.

Katarina McGinnis, a pet owner and neighbor says, “It’s devastating because there are not a lot of women of color who are veterinarians”. Dr. Butler is said to never have turned people away from her clinic even if those in need of her service couldn’t pay. Passing at 62-years-old due to coronavirus complications, Dr. Butler leaves her husband, two children, a world of pet owners, and neighbors who deeply cared for and loved her.

The Importance of Researching COVID-19 Infections on Animals

research on animals

The study of the new coronavirus has placed public health bodies around the world’s entire focus on human health. Yet, it has been forgotten that the virus’ characteristics are zoonotic – disease characteristics that normally exist in animals but can be transmitted to people. This situation should urge scientists and medical professionals to do more research on assistance animals as well.

It has been proven by scientific study that infected animals pass the infection to humans. But, there is little research done to show exactly how SARS-CoV-2 behaves while infecting animals in general. Prof. Tracey McNamara, Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA, along with her colleagues argues that “[a]bsence of evidence is not the same thing as evidence of absence.”

non profit receives grant

As the entire United States struggles to maintain basic services in the COVID-19 pandemic, so does the Have a Heart Pet Shelter. Thousands of animals are already abandoned without homes as a result of the current crisis so Have a Heart takes them in for care and aid. While waiting for families and homes suitable for adoption, the Arkansas-based shelter’s food supplies have dwindled. That is why American Humane has chosen Have a Heart Pet Shelter as one of their Feed the Hungry Fund’s beneficiaries. Dr. Robin Ganzert, the President and CEO of American Humane said that, “To stand by and do nothing during this time is unconscionable.”

Indonesian Zoo Animals in Lockdown Depend on Donations

indonesian zoo

In Northern Sumatra, the Medan Zoo and its management ensure that all animals will not starve due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 260 animals in the zoo usually have 3,000 visitors daily. Ever since the outbreak, the numbers dropped to 300 and then zero when it finally closed due to the lockdown.

Since the zoo’s management rely on visits for funding to feed the animals, they have now resorted to donations in order to keep the animals fed and healthy. Some donations came in coins and some came in the form of fruits and vegetables. Not only did the donations come from the locality of Medan, but the help also came from other Indonesian cities and the nation of Singapore.

English Pet Crematorium Continue Operations Amidst COVID-19 Crisis

crematorium service for pets

The Gedling Borough Council’s Pet Cremation Service of Nottinghamshire continues running at full operation despite the coronavirus lockdown. However, social distancing measures are still being implemented strictly. Instead of owners bringing in their deceased companions, their pets are collected from home or vet surgeries.

The crematorium spokesman said, “Currently, we are offering our collection and return service but we are unable to allow anyone to bring their pets to our crematorium.” Every person who wishes to avail of their services is offered different packages such as unique urns, caskets, and memorial plaques. Sheep, deer, geckos, chickens, rabbits, and hamsters are also eligible for crematory services along with their dog and cat peers.

Animal Airlines: Cabin or Hold?

pet travel

So where does your pet go when traveling via air? That depends on the airlines and the animal’s breed. For American Airlines, pets over eight-weeks and can fit under the cabin seat are allowed to be placed in the cabin. For British Airways, only special assistance dogs and emotional assistance animals flying directly from and to the U.S. are allowed in the cabin, while the rest is placed in the hold. But among these two airlines, there is one common rule; Brachycephalic(short-nosed) dogs such as Pugs and Boxers aren’t allowed to fly due to the risk of breathing difficulties. Animals placed in the hold for travel are mostly safe as most airline companies hold this duty in high regard.

British Exotic Animal Rescue Service Faces Financial Hardship Due to Pandemic

exotic animal rescue

The Animals in Hands usually brings rescued exotic animals to care-homes, school nurseries, and parties. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the U.K. lockdown happening, all of these events are canceled.

Mo Safeer, the rescue service’s runner faces problems in keeping the rescued animals fed and healthy. As a result, he has launched a fundraising page of raising £11,500 to keep the service up and running. “Currently, Animals in Hands now have over 150 animals in their care equating to 80 different species, so you might appreciate why our veterinary costs last month were just over £700 not to mention the monthly animal food and animal husbandry costs!”, said Safeer.
