Anthrozoology Professor Talks About Service Animals in Morning Radio Show

service dog and kid

Joining Tony Doucette in the Windsor Morning, Anthrozoology professor Beth Daly answered several questions about service animals and their presence in school. Here were some of the things discussed:

The uses of service animals: Service animals help with many things, from opening and closing doors for disabled people, to providing comfort to those with autism.

Service animals in classroom settings: School boards may question the need for service animals since people can do their job. Yet, a disabled child may feel most comfortable asking a service animal for help.

Considerations when creating policies: School boards need to think about some important things such as the fear of animals, allergies, and more. Boards must ensure fairness for everyone in the classroom – kids with and without a service animal.

Service Dog Gives Wounded Boy a Chance at a New Life

service dog award

Antonio was a boy who got shot in the head in 2015 as his family was on their way to dinner. He was just a nine-year-old boy back then. Antonio went into a state of coma for 18 days and had five brain surgeries.

To help in his day-to-day life, in 2016, he was paired with a service dog named Alice. Alice assists Antonio in many things. Some of them include going to school, taking a walk outside, detecting an oncoming seizure, and helping him with his balance.

Tara, Antonio’s mother, says, “She is a loyal and loving hero everyday. She’s saved Antonio’s life many times. She is his guardian angel and helps him live his new normal to the fullest extent possible.”

Did you know? Antonio recently got awarded as the 2019 American Hero Dog. Other finalists included Piglet, a dog who helps locate people on land and water, and Yeager, a dog who detects explosive devices.

Kenyon College’s resident is on its second year

cat in campus

Kenyon College has an unofficial mascot that emerged from its liberal-arts college two years ago.

Moxie, a black cat, arrived on campus as a six-month-old kitten in 2017 with another cat called Mosie. Pastor Susan Stevens, adopted the strays, but Moxie wasn’t one to stay home.

These days, Moxie spends his time riding on students’ backpacks around the campus, roaming and scratching maple tree trunks. The school’s community is delighted to have moxie around although sometimes he can cause quite the commotion by walking in lecture halls and the on-campus Episcopal church during reverend Rachel Kessler’s sermons. He even had to be rescued by the fire department one time when he got stuck on a coffee shop’s roof.

Kessler usually shoos him out and shrugs it off, but says she loves Moxie despite her allergies. Students at the campus feel the same way.

September celebrates Service Dog Awareness

brown service dog

There’s a difference between a service dog and emotional support animals, and private dog trainer Brandi Garcia wishes that more people are educated on the true definition of service dogs.

This month aims to raise awareness for them and for the valuable work that they do for their humans.

While every breed can become a service dog, not all are capable to be one. Prospects can already undergo the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test at 7 weeks old by putting them in different situations to determine confidence and trainability.

The most common service dogs are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and Collies due to their trainability and stable temperament. Service dogs are considered to be on duty and must not be distracted by petting.

Help for disabled cats and dogs

dog with wheels

Often, pet owners are unable to provide equipment for their disabled pets due to lack of funds.

To aid this growing concern, Thailand-based Chakr Pichaironnarongsongkram Foundation is now distributing special wheelchairs as part of their initiative.

The wheelchairs being distributed by the foundation are made of inexpensive PVC and can help the animals with walking and physical therapy. These are made of lightweight materials, are adjustable to the animal’s size and are designed to have two or four wheels depending on the impairment.

These inventions were developed under the guidance of veterinarians and aim, not only to help animals move but also to give them a chance to live normal lives again.

Now our furry friends can get the support they need to resume their lives.

An afternoon of fun at the Clarksburg City Park

small dog

Last Saturday, our furry friends and their owners had fun in the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ Event at Clarksburg City Park, Nutter Fort, WV.

Megan Krajewski, Board Member of the West Virginia Service Dog Support Group, said that they are aiming to educate the community on the difference between service animals, emotional support animals, and therapy animals, and the law that surrounds them.

All About Dogs, a training organization, was happy to see many pet owners coming together for the event. Owner Brenda Scotchie said it was great to meet people who are familiar with training and can help with dog concerns.

Dogs and cats alike were offered vaccines by the Clarksburg Veterinary Hospital, while spay and neuter vouchers were given to residents by Harrison County. There were also games and activities for the attendees.

Taking an emotional support animal in a rental property? Here’s what you need to know

emotional support cat

The rise in ownership of emotional support animals recently opened discussions in Boise, ID as to the owners’ rights to bring their animals with them in rental properties.

The federal Fair Housing Act allows people who own emotional support animals in rental housing in the same way as service animals, provided that the animals are certified by a qualified medical professional.

According to Rebecca Wisch with Michigan State University College of Law’s Animal Legal and Historical Center, to get the animal certified, the owner must be diagnosed with a disability by a doctor or psychiatrist or another provider, and the provider must find that an animal can help the treatment.

Landlords are concerned with people who fake emotional support animals and the potential property damage the animals might cause.

Idaho has laws on misrepresentation of emotional support animals and is punishable with a fine.

Do you have an emotional support animal?

emotional support animal

A lot of people have pets. Most are considered as members of the family, but some do more than usual.

Many people confuse emotional support animals with service animals.

Canines for Change is a non-profit organization that trains service dogs for people with disabilities, and Executive Director Nikki Brown says service animals can give emotional support, but they’re also trained with life-saving skills.

Emotional support animals, however, are not required to be trained, but they do provide comfort for people who have emotional issues, according to Psychologist Reema Beri.

While service dogs are allowed anywhere as stated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), emotional support animals do not have the same access as they are not considered as service animals.

It is highly encouraged to call the establishment first to be sure if your emotional support animal is allowed to tag along.

September is National Service Dog Month

service dog month

Formerly called National Guide Dog Month, the National Service Dog Month was established in 2008 by Dick Van Patten, an actor, and animal advocate, after he was inspired by a visit to Guide Dogs of the Desert in Palm Springs.

The fundraising that he launched to benefit guide and service dog training schools shortly became an annual celebration.

A lot of service dog organizations have two main objectives: to provide trained companion animals for people with disabilities and to save rescue animals’ lives from dying in shelters.

The work that these service dogs do is therapeutic and helpful to the humans that they care for. This month is dedicated in their honor to raise awareness and to appreciate the amazing work that they do for people across the country.

Award-winning author shares experience with service dog

author and service dog

September is dedicated to raising awareness and showing appreciation to service dogs.

In celebration of the National Service Dog Month, Sassafras Lowrey, an award-winning author, and Certified Trick Dog Instructor shares her first-hand experience with her service dog, Mercury.

She had Mercury when she was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at a young age of 18. The service dog was very instrumental during her treatment who was trained to alert her when there are changes in her body and if there’s an incoming panic attack.

Psychiatric service dogs are protected the same as other service dogs. According to the Americans With Disabilities Act, a service animal is defined as a dog trained to perform tasks or work for a person with a disability, including those with “invisible disabilities”.
