Emotional Support Animals Spread Positivity at Morning Pointe

Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence in Russell, Kentucky is blessed to have not just dedicated people but animals, too.

Elizabeth Townsend, the executive director of Morning Pointe brings her Jack Russell terrier to work almost every day. He brings joy to the residents and staff, giving due attention to those who need it. Everyone can cuddle him, pet him, or talk with him.

A huge black mastiff named Midnight Moon from Portsmouth also visits the facility when his owner does a circuit.

Many residents bring their pets in their apartment too, which is encouraged at Morning Pointe. As Katie Smith, life enrichment director at Morning Pointe says, “They always remember to care for their pets.

They also have a sanctuary for injured turtles—a garden with flowers and vegetables, a garden tended to by the residents themselves. They also accept turtles donated by the community.

Smith is also reaching out to vet clinics and society to get more pets to visit them. For interested volunteers, your pet must be licensed as an emotional support animal or as a therapy pet and should have a proof of immunization.

Pet Expert Reveals the Effect of Dogs on Troubled Teens

teenager with dog

Brandon Forder, the vice president of the family-operated Canadian Pet Connection, widely known as The Pet Expert explains the impact dogs have on troubled teens.

Since the growing popularity of emotional support therapy dogs in the United States, their impact is clear on the society including those with PTSD, victims of child abuse, and the elderly.

According to Forder, the unique demographics of teenagers are known to suffer from loneliness, angst, and depression, among other negative feelings.

On the contrary, studies show that pet ownership during childhood and adolescence can lead to cognitive, educational, and social development. Forder further explains that dogs provide judgment-free affection and awkward-free intimacy.

Meanwhile, teens with violent or aggressive tendencies are advised against keeping an animal at home.

DOT releases statement on flying with an emotional support animal

flying with emotional sa

The word about scams has reached the Department of Transportation and they recently issued a statement about which animals get to fly for free.

Trained, documented, and therapist-approved animals are flying on airlines for free and it doesn’t matter how many ESAs you have.

Scammers have taken advantage of these rights and claim their animals are ESAs to avoid paying airlines hundreds of dollars.

Some animals cause trouble on the plane biting passengers and going to the bathroom. DOT clarifies that airlines should ask for documentation on training and passengers should notify ahead to avoid problems between species on the plane.

Airlines are to comply with the new guidelines over the next 30 days. DOT is expected to release a final set of rules by fall of 2020.

Have You Tried Cow Therapy In NY?

mountain horse farm

Animal-assisted therapy shows a positive impact for people diagnosed with autism, behavioral problems, depression, addiction, and other medical conditions.

Animal therapy includes the likes of dogs, cats, birds, pigs, and horses (equine therapy).

Now, Mountain Horse Farm, a bed-and-breakfast in Finger Lakes, New York, offers animal therapy in the form of cows.

In comparison to horses, cows lie on the grass, inviting a practice called cow cuddling.

An equine therapist supervises the sessions and monitors the animals to ensure they have a positive experience, too.

As of this writing, only two cows can do the job of animal therapy and take on no more than two one-hour sessions a day. Bella and Bonnie are highlander-Angus crossbred cows who can be pet, brushed, or talked to as a form of de-stressing.

Support CCI to help those in need

labrador

Over 6,000 highly-skilled assistance dogs have found new homes with individuals with disabilities. The dogs were trained by Canine Companions for Independence or CCI and placed in the homes of those in need—free of charge.

CCI is a nationwide, nonprofit founded in 1975. They now have six regional offices around the country and recently opened a facility in New Albany, Ohio.

The CCI breeds, raises, and trains Labrador retrievers, Golden retrievers or a cross of the two to serve, protect, and help those in need. Training a dog can cost up to $50,000 but, with the help of sponsors, are given to those in need for free.

Initial training is with a puppy raiser—volunteer work that is valued by Lilly Mitsui, the president of the Inland Northwest Chapter. For more puppy raisers, she says, means more trained dogs in the hands of people who need them.

Meanwhile, a sponsor of the local chapter in Ohio, Mountain West Bank is accepting donations for CCI throughout August. Interested sponsors can visit their main branch on S. Division and Highway 200.

animal stamps

#MilitaryDogsStamps are trending online since a booklet of 20 stamps was issued on August 3 at the American Philatelic Society Stamp Show in Omaha.

USPS Art Director Greg Breeding designed the hand-sketched stamps which were brought to life in Adobe Illustrator by DKNG Studios. The designs featured red, white, and blue colors and white stars to show the patriotism exhibited by the military working dogs.

Canine breeds featured in the illustrations included the German Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, and Labrador retriever.

David C. Williams, vice chairman of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors served as the dedicating official of the ceremony. He was joined by other military veterans and law enforcement officers to dedicate the stamps.

A Call for Pet Therapy Volunteers

pet therapy volunteers

Calling owners of pets that love to comfort and provide stress-relief, you may want to volunteer your pet for therapy work.

Kit Darling, president of the pet therapy org Aggieland Pets with a Purpose, reveals the benefits of pet therapy to different types of people. She volunteered her dogs and attest to the positive impact pets play when taking on this role.

Non-judgmental in nature, they provide joy and comfort no matter what the person feels.

Pet therapy is useful in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehab centers, assisted living facilities, and even in classrooms.

Therapy animals help relieve stress, anxiety, improve communication, decrease loneliness, and lower blood pressure.

Organizations like the Canine Good Citizen test help train therapy dogs. Larger groups like Pet Partners and Therapy Dogs International certify the animals and refer a place to volunteer.

New Bill Penalizes Misrepresentation of a Service Animal up to $1,000

law updates

Service animals trained and certified by law to do work for persons with disabilities can wear a leash, a harness, and a “do not touch” sign.

Non-certified animals and emotional support animals do not have the same rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA.

Starting August 1, putting this vest on animals not certified to wear it will cost up to $1,000 in penalties.

The House Bill 1259 was signed by Republican Governor Doug Burgum on April 17 and put into effect on August 1. It was sponsored by Jamestown Republican Rep. Bernie Satrom to address the increasing cases of service animal fraud.
