Pet Therapy Benefits Teens, Too

pets benefit teens

New York teens recently adopted a 7-year old Tabby and already, their bond is unbreakable.

Just the past spring, teens N’deye and M’baye adopted Chester, an orange and white tabby with permission from their mom.

Thirteen-year-old M’baye says Chester is helping her cope with school and family life. She says she can tell her cat anything without worrying about judgments.

Psychologists agree that pets can have physiological and emotional benefits for teenagers.

Dr. Aubrey Fine of Cal Poly State University tells us that petting an animal reduces the heart rate and minimizes cortisol levels.

The Professor Emeritus Fine who is also an author of books about children and animals explained that animals help diffuse the sense of loneliness and isolation.

Studies show the effect of work on therapy dogs

beagle

For years, much research has been conducted on the effect of therapy dogs on humans. Only recently did researchers start to study the effect of the work on the dogs.

The nonprofit organization American Humane conducted two separate studies testing the cortisol levels in the dogs’ saliva throughout the day.

Dr. Margaret O’Haire of Purdue University conducted one of the studies and found a minimal difference in stress levels whether the dogs were working or resting at home.

Dr. Mary Jo Gilmer of Vanderbilt University continued the research on therapy dogs working with kids in a critical condition.

The studies revealed that even with dogs working with cancer patients, in hospitals, and nursing homes, the dogs surprisingly held the same temperament.

Natalie Bilynski, one of the recreational therapists, have learned to take cues from dogs who isolate themselves when stressed. Therapy is kept short and the full-time dog therapists get a lot of breaks. They also get treats and affection from everyone.

Do Emotional Support Animals get the same legal rights as guide dogs?

cat maple

5-year old Maple has been trained to calm depression, anxiety, and full-bodied spasms. But, her owner says, she doesn’t share the same legal rights as other service animals.

Maple is registered with the American-based private registry service Emotional Support Animal or ESA UK. The ESA registration costs £50 annually and include registration on the ESA list, a certificate, and an identification badge.

Her owner, Joanne Foster, of Blackpool, says registering her cat with ESA UK gave her confidence to bring Maple out in public wearing a harness and special vest.

Still, the two have become a subject of discrimination, insults, and getting kicked out. This, despite the ESA registration, Joanne’s disabled badge, and a prescriptive letter from her doctor.

She is now campaigning for ESAs to gain the same recognition and legal rights as working guide dogs. She also hopes to encourage others to train and register their pets through proper channels.

What You Should Know Before Traveling Internationally With Your Pet

traveling with pet

We consider traveling to be an exciting experience. However, some pets just don’t make great travel companions. They can get sensitive to motion and feel a lot of anxiety. There are a few things you can do to ensure a safe and less stressful travel:

  • The first thing you should do is to make sure that your airline of choice will allow your pets to fly abroad with you. Expect that you’ll pay a fee and be required to show your pet’s medical records.
  • Get an international health certificate for your pet. Here’s a link to USDA’s checklist.
  • Prepare the right carrier and accessories that your pet will need. Also, keep in mind that some breeds have difficulty breathing properly in cargo conditions. You don’t want your pet to be in that kind of situation.

Senior Living Community Gets Pet Therapy Once A Month

seniors

Various studies have suggested that pets are good for our health. They reduce our stress, lower our blood pressure, and offer unconditional love. And it’s no secret that more and more pets are being introduced to assisted living communities like Florence Place.

Located in Florence, South Carolina, Florence Place offers memory care lane services to residents who have dementia. One of the activities residents participate in is “life stories,” where they talk about their past memories and things that may trigger them.

Once a month, Florence Place also enjoys pet therapy. Various animals interact with the residents. These animals include chickens, pigs, puppies, and horses.

15 Year Old Gets Kitty Therapy Twice A Week

kitty therapy

Chelsea Mayberry has autism, anxiety, and depression. For the past 3 years, she has visited Central Dakota Humane Society, a no-kill shelter, to cuddle and greet dozens of cats for adoption. Her socializing with the felines has a calming effect on her. According to Chelsea’s mom, she struggles relating to people. However, when she goes to the shelter, she meets those who’ll adopt the kittens. That’s when she gets to socialize.

“Kitty therapy” has not only helped with Chelsea’s socialization, but it has also helped her academically. As a volunteer at the shelter, she researches about the medical conditions that some of the kittens have and shares what she has learned to people.

Horseback Riding Non-Profit Helps With All Disabilities

cattle

In-Stride With Therapeutic Riding Inc. was founded by Dana Flaherty, who is a breast cancer survivor. Dana works full-time as a teacher and is responsible for coordinating the programs at In-Stride. In case you didn’t know, In-Stride With Therapeutic Riding Inc. helps kids with all types of disabilities. Some kids who come to In-Stride to spend time with the horses struggle with autism, anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

Dana says, “This is really good with kids with autism. Having a job with the horses brings out the best in people. I’ve seen so many kids branch out just after one summer of lessons.” Veterans can also come and ride the horses on Thursdays.

In-Stride has been struggling with funds that would help participants with their lessons, pay the rent, and keep all the animals fed. Dana also hopes to expand their program to therapeutic gardening and help cancer survivors like herself. In-Stride looks forward to raising $260,000. If you want to learn more or donate, you can email instride@hotmail.com.
