Thinking of bringing your furry family member? Think again.

While we love them, there are laws on bringing of Service Animals and forbidding pets in establishments that we can’t just ignore.

FDA prohibits bringing live animals but allows service animals in establishments such as grocery stores, restaurants and other premises catering to food. Unfortunately, therapy dogs and emotional support pets do not count as service animals.

In a Green Valley supermarket, for instance, a manager had to ask a customer with a bird perched on a poop-covered shoulder to step out of the store.

Said establishments are allowed to ask you if your pet is required by your disability, what it does for you and if found otherwise, they should, by law, escort you out the door.

Service Dogs Accompany Their Handlers To The Theater

dogs watching performance

K-9 Country Inn Working Service Dogs knows how important it is for service dogs to be able to go with their handlers in a public environment. So, on August 15, they set a day for the dogs in training to enjoy a performance of Billy Elliot at Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada.

As you can see, the dogs calmly watched the show. Audiences who were present were also thrilled to see the dogs. Stratford Festival spokesperson Ann Swerdfager says, “It’s wonderful that going to the theatre is considered one of the things that you want to train a service dog for, rather than thinking that theatre is out of reach for people who require a service animal, because it isn’t.”

Emotional Support Animals Spread Positivity at Morning Pointe

jack russell

Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence in Russell, Kentucky is blessed to have not just dedicated people but animals, too.

Elizabeth Townsend, the executive director of Morning Pointe brings her Jack Russell terrier to work almost every day. He brings joy to the residents and staff, giving due attention to those who need it. Everyone can cuddle him, pet him, or talk with him.

A huge black mastiff named Midnight Moon from Portsmouth also visits the facility when his owner does a circuit.

Many residents bring their pets in their apartment too, which is encouraged at Morning Pointe. As Katie Smith, life enrichment director at Morning Pointe says, “They always remember to care for their pets.

They also have a sanctuary for injured turtles—a garden with flowers and vegetables, a garden tended to by the residents themselves. They also accept turtles donated by the community.

Smith is also reaching out to vet clinics and society to get more pets to visit them. For interested volunteers, your pet must be licensed as an emotional support animal or as a therapy pet and should have a proof of immunization.

Pet Expert Reveals the Effect of Dogs on Troubled Teens

teenager with dog

Brandon Forder, the vice president of the family-operated Canadian Pet Connection, widely known as The Pet Expert explains the impact dogs have on troubled teens.

Since the growing popularity of emotional support therapy dogs in the United States, their impact is clear on the society including those with PTSD, victims of child abuse, and the elderly.

According to Forder, the unique demographics of teenagers are known to suffer from loneliness, angst, and depression, among other negative feelings.

On the contrary, studies show that pet ownership during childhood and adolescence can lead to cognitive, educational, and social development. Forder further explains that dogs provide judgment-free affection and awkward-free intimacy.

Meanwhile, teens with violent or aggressive tendencies are advised against keeping an animal at home.

DOT releases statement on flying with an emotional support animal

flying with emotional sa

The word about scams has reached the Department of Transportation and they recently issued a statement about which animals get to fly for free.

Trained, documented, and therapist-approved animals are flying on airlines for free and it doesn’t matter how many ESAs you have.

Scammers have taken advantage of these rights and claim their animals are ESAs to avoid paying airlines hundreds of dollars.

Some animals cause trouble on the plane biting passengers and going to the bathroom. DOT clarifies that airlines should ask for documentation on training and passengers should notify ahead to avoid problems between species on the plane.

Airlines are to comply with the new guidelines over the next 30 days. DOT is expected to release a final set of rules by fall of 2020.
