Canine Companions Connects Assistance Dogs With Veterans

canine companions

According to the Pew Research Center, people who have served in the army may have a hard time transitioning back to civilian life. This is where Canine Companions LTD comes in.

A non-profit organization and founded by Walter James Hart, Jr., Canine Companions have a goal which is to train canines to be able to support trauma victims and anyone with disabilities – this definitely includes veterans who may be struggling with mental health and physical problems. If you want to find them, they operate on the 8th floor of Dream Center Foundation in Silver Lake.

The veterans program director Anthony Worley says that canines can be trained to perform certain actions for veterans such as opening doors. No matter the case, diagnosed or undiagnosed, they can help out.

Spotted: Alpaca at Bunnings Warehouse in Perth

alpaca

Bunnings Warehouse is a DIY and hardware store that is popular for animal sightings – dogs, possums, and more. Bunnings welcomes your four-legged friends as long as they are kept on a leash, are wearing a muzzle, or are carried.

Recently, an alpaca was photographed with its owner. The photo was posted to a Facebook group. However, this isn’t the first time that alpacas have been to Bunnings. Mamoes Country Cottage, a West Australian cottage farm, hosts events at the store, and people get to take pictures of their various animals.

In 2015, there was an incident where a 5-year-old girl was bitten by a Jack Russell Terrier on the leg inside the store. Bunnings paid for the girl’s medical bills. However, their policy permitting dogs inside remained.

College Student Trains Her Own Service Dog

raindrop photo

Madison Love is a student at Knox-Westerlo campus and she is diagnosed with autism and anxiety. Love has a mix-breed pet dog named Raindrop, which she adopted in September 2017 after a hurricane.

Love admits that she never intended to train Raindrop to become her service dog until her sister died. The death of her sister made her anxiety even worse and she also suffered from paranoia.

Love and her family know how expensive it is to train a service dog, so Love did a lot of research on training and started doing it herself. One of the things that Raindrop does to calm Love down is that she nudges Love to sit and lies across her lap.

“It sends a message to my brain and makes it so I can calm down a lot quicker,” Love said.

Pet Care Challenges Sparked the Idea for a Pet Wellness Business

pet services

Vaibhav Jain, Minal Kaushik and Yasir Khalil started a pet wellness service named Cozo Pet. Cozo Pet will be there to help pet parents discover and book personalized services for their fur babies. These services include grooming, vaccination, pet walking, and pet sitting.

The idea for this business was born out of the realization that pet parents often face challenges such as transportation for their pets, the lack of a pet-friendly infrastructure, and the lack of professionals who are trained to handle different dog breeds.

The trio started offering 600 sessions in November 2018 and was able to perform a total of 91,000 sessions up to May 2019. They also have 200 trained professionals and almost 550 freelancers on their team.

Rape Crisis Center Therapy Dogs Help Victims in Their Journey to Recovery

canberra therapy dogs

Dogs have an amazing ability to sense human emotions quickly. They also help bridge the gap between verbal and non-verbal language. Canberra Rape Crisis Centre uses therapy dogs to offer support to victims.

Penny Pestano, the service director, has lived with pet dogs for a long time until she decided to take them to work. She brought a dog to the center for the first time in 2016. Mahlee, her trained therapy dog, has been a great help to Canberra ever since.

Chief executive officer Chrystina Stanford said that a lot of the people who come to Canberra have difficulty expressing what’s happened to them, so when the dogs join the sessions, victims get to pat them and be able to talk about how they feel. Canberra Rape Crisis Centre also takes the therapy dogs to schools.

Meet Charlie, an adorable, furry “employee” at Heritage Health in Bloomington. While Charlie has not been certified as a therapy dog, he greets Heritage Health residents and allows them to pet him.

However, Charlie is now 15 years old and the staff has started planning for Charlie’s retirement. Alison Skelton, the community relations coordinator, says that Charlie can no longer walk like he used to and works fewer hours. On Friday, June 21, Heritage Health finally celebrated his retirement. Also, the staff is hoping to look for a successor, a facility dog, that can live in the nursing home. They’re considering Paws Giving Independence.

Organization Provides Service Dogs to Three US Veterans

chocolate lab service dog

Michael Kidd, Harry Stolberg, and Phil Davanzo, US veterans who are suffering from PTSD, were able to seek comfort in pet therapy, thanks to an organization that trains shelter dogs to become service dogs named Paws of War. The organization has been founded in 2014 and so far they have graduated 102 service dogs.

Stolberg shares that his 3-year old service dog, Rocky, wakes him up from his nightmares. Rocky also helps Stolberg navigate large crowds that could trigger PTSD symptoms.

Kidd, who also suffers from severe PTSD, was able to reduce his intake of medication because of his service dog Millie. He says that Millie places her paws on his shoulder and chest as if she’s saying that she’s here for him.
