There’s this new furry friend that’s been making everyone at the St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston feel more comfortable and happy. This little guy’s name is Otis and he’s a nine-year-old Labradoodle.

Otis’ owner, Mr. Battersby, said that his wife thought that Otis would make a great PAT (pets as therapy) dog because of his good behavior. After getting Otis registered, the couple thought of bringing Otis to St Mary’s Hospice. At first, they were apprehensive. But everyone at the hospice loved and appreciated Otis’ presence.

The marketing manager of the hospice, Sarah Simpson, says that they cannot thank Mr. Battersby for bringing Otis to them.

We’ve been hearing stories of people who carry fake assistance animals on flights or assistance animals that misbehave and cause trouble among passengers. Southwest Airlines is no stranger to such incidents.

But just recently, they announced a change in policy which will take effect on September 17 this year. This policy covers emotional support animals. According to Southwest Airlines, an airline passenger is required to bring only one emotional support animal. The animal should be a cat or dog, and must be on the leash.

There is no change when it comes to presenting a medical letter from a medical professional to the airlines. This will be done on the day of the departure.

Southwest Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Operations and Hospitality,  Steve Goldberg, says that the company wants people to have a hassle-free and comfortable experience. Therefore, they make their emotional support animal guidelines clear for everyone.

College can be a stressful time in a person’s life, which is why it always helps to have a friend to count on. Speaking of friends, pets make great ones. They increase our sense of accountability, giving us many reasons to face the day.

Here’s an inspiring story of Caroline Clendening who is a creation and tourism management major from Dallas, Texas. When she started college, she was diagnosed with depression and it made it difficult for her to interact with others, let alone eat. During her second year, she decided to adopt a pet cat and certify it as an emotional support animal. Her cat’s name is JiJi.

Caroline, now a fourth year, recalls how her life has changed since JiJi came. Because JiJi was counting on her each day, that motivated Caroline to carry on. Caroline is now the president of the club You’re Not Alone.

If you want to ease the stress of college life, know that cats are not the only options for pets. There are other animals that make you feel better. Examples are dogs, rabbits, turtles, and more.

Pets aren’t usually allowed in schools because of some cases such as allergies and they could distract the students. However, at Centerville Independent School District, the situation is different. A dog’s presence is used as therapy and services for students who need them.

While a student’s life includes stress and their mental health is very crucial, Centerville Highschool Principal Claudia Mordecai allowed trained therapy to service dogs to be on campus and houses one in their counselor’s office so that students can sign up for dog time.

The dogs work with children that require special needs as well as those in the typical classroom setting. There are also different purposes for dogs on campuses and one of it is it helps stops the bullying. Children who get exposed to dogs on campus get excited by their presence making one of their purposes conducive to the learning of students.

Several teachers also foster the therapy and service dogs. While children benefit from having dogs near their vicinity, they also learn how to care for them and appreciate the blessings of having dogs as man’s best friend. It teaches them the value of living beings and how to become better individuals when they grow up to become adults.

Most war veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after service, and it is hard to comfort them when their panic strikes, but dogs have been to the rescue during such times, so here are the stories of veterans who had their lives changed by assistance animals from the Washington Area Human Society’s Pets for Vets.

Toby is an 18-month-old Pitbull Terrier mix whose owner was part of the U.S. Army, Jesse Stenger, 81-years-old from Finleyville had a wife who died of cancer has found companionship on his adopted canine friend. Even with his wife passed on, Jesse won’t be alone with having Toby by his side.

Also, Steven Adams, an Army veteran who fought in Operation: Desert Storm at Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the early 90’s gets calmed by his dog Otter when he feels anxious or jumpy. “Being around animals is therapy itself.” Said Adams. While Adams is the Manager of Veteran’s Services at the Patriot House, he also plans to bring veterans from the Patriot House to the humane society, so they can help care for the animals in the kennels waiting for a second chance at having a family.
