Why Animal-Assisted Therapy is a Great Addition to Addiction Recovery Tools

pexels-scott-webb-137031

Substance addiction withdrawal is no easy ordeal to deal with. A lot of recovering people feel chills, shake, or show aggression. Animals provide emotional and psychological benefits to the patients by making them feel calmer and secure.

Therapy animals can also give confidence to the patient who feels ashamed to share their experience. It’s not easy for someone to talk about the bad decisions they made in life once they come down from a drug-induced nightmare.

With a therapy animal by their side, they’re more inclined to open up to one-on-one or group therapy sessions due to the security and confidence they receive from their furry companion.

Animal Therapy Program Continues to Serve But This Time It’s Contactless

The Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare’s Animal Therapy Program has brought joy to those inside schools, rehab centers, hospitals, and nursing homes for 15 years. But because of the pandemic, providing comfort and happiness in-person to those in need during these troubling times has been a challenge.

However, instead of canceling all visitation activities and shutting down operations, the therapy program has adapted a contactless visit through virtual space and window-visits. The Program Director, Stephanie Perkins said, “I think seeing the animals on the screen and being able to talk to them and keep up with them on screen has helped everyone.” Until today, the program is still able to do visits daily.

Therapy Dog With Honorary Doctorate Passes Away Due to Prostate Cancer

pexels-lisa-fotios-791862

Last May 15 this year, Moose was given the Honorary Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine for his 6-year therapy dog service at Virginia Tech’s Cook Counseling Center. Born on February 13, 2012, Moose was raised to be a guide dog by New York’s Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

But fate had a different plan for him. He became one of the four therapy animal ambassadors for mental health at the counseling center becoming an icon on campus. Moose often appeared at a lot of school events like homecomings, orientations, graduations, and the university’s Gobblerfest.

Sadly, our hero has succumbed to his prostate cancer which was diagnosed last February. “Moose was peaceful and comfortable at home in the arms of his loving family and his doggie brother, Derek.” as stated in a shared photo from his official Instagram page.

Emotional Support Animals Continue to Bring Joy and Hope Amidst Pandemic

pexels-thevibrantmachine-2958113

There is no vaccine yet and the virus still continues to put the entire planet in a recession. The news we receive from the T.V. and the Internet aren’t reassuring as well. For some of us, this can be quite alarming, depressing, or anxiety-inducing.

If you’re a part of the population who have been negatively affected by the current state of the world. Now may be the best time for you to get an emotional support animal. A new survey from CertaPet, a Texas-based company found that people who have gotten emotional support animals are better off mentally.

As Prairie Conlon, clinical care director of CertaPet, states “This study demonstrates that what those in animal assisted therapy spaces have long known: That a pet can drastically increase your quality of life.”

Airlines Temporarily Ban Emotional Support Animals

breed-1005404_1920

Last December 2, the Department of Transportation announced that it is currently revising the Air Carrier Access Act on the transportation of service animals via airplanes. The purpose is to ensure a safe and accessible air transportation system.

However, this does not mean that other trained service animals will leave their impaired owners. Service animals like guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf, and mobility assistance dogs for those with mobility problems will remain permitted to stay in the passenger’s cabin alongside those they serve.

Emotional Support Animals will be considered as pets and their owners with a mental illness with a legitimate clinical diagnosis will have to pay travel fees.

Are Emotional Support Dogs Breed Restricted?

dog-paw-1102125_1920

Dogs of different breeds like Pit Bulls and Dobermanns are considered Emotional Support Animals (ESA) because ESAs do not fall under the category of pets under the Fair Housing Act or Americans with Disabilities Act.

However, if a person declares a dog to be their ESA, no matter what breed it is, that person must provide sufficient documents that they are in need of the dog and that dog is recognized as a therapy animal for the person.

These documents are provided by the mental healthcare professional who treats the person in need of the ESA. If the healthcare practitioner comes from out-of-state and the authority seeking documents is from a different jurisdiction, the healthcare professional must indicate that they have provided services to the person with an ESA at least once before giving an opinion.

A Former Athlete’s Story on How Her Pet Made Everything in Their Life Better

woman-hiking-with-dog-in-fall-leaves

Derval O’Rourke wanted a dog so much so she told her husband about it. Then her husband answered her that if she made it to the top eight of the race she was going to run in and broke the Irish record at the World Outdoor Championships, they would get a dog.

She ran well and finished fourth at the race. They then got a dog who was two months old at the time and named her Berlino – the name of the competition mascot. O’Rourke said, “Berlino has brought so much joy into our lives. If I’d had a bad race, I’d lie on the floor and she’d end up lying on top of me. If there’s anything wrong with me she’s very intuitive about it. She’s an amazing companion. We know she won’t live forever, but the amount of joy she has brought us, we know that when the time comes, it will basically be a celebration of her doggie life.”

The Dolgeville group does a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for cats. First, they spay and neuter cats that were trapped humanely. Then, they are given anti-rabies vaccines and are taken to a place for care, food, and shelter. This is called The Dolgeville Forward C.A.T. Project and it has helped more than 100 cats in the colony.

This year, the project will participate in the Staffworks Fund Save A Life Campaign. The campaign will then match donations from Nov. 30 through Dec. 31 to other animal welfare organizations throughout New York State and Pennsylvania.

To help support the organization and its efforts, mail to Dolgeville Forward C.A.T. Project, PO Box 71, Dolgeville, NY 13329. You can also donate through the Paypal link on the Facebook page at Dolgeville Forward C.A.T. Project Trap/Neuter/Return.

Blind Cat Wins Prestigious Animal Medal in Britain

pexels-pixabay-209037

Carrots the blind cat wins the 2020 Blue Cross Medal for Britain’s most heroic pet after bringing happiness and comfort to patients and their families at Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice. He works as a therapy cat and sits beside patients twice a week to be petted relieving them from feeling anxious and depressed.

“I’ll never forget one evening when we received a call from the hospice to say there was an older man facing difficult circumstances. He was very distressed and agitated and was requesting a visit from Carrots When he saw me with Carrots on my shoulder at the door, he immediately relaxed. Shortly after Carrots snuggled down on the bed with him, the man fell asleep,” said Katie Lloyd, Carrots’ owner.

Things You Need to Consider Before Giving a Pet as a Christmas Gift

karsten-winegeart-u1B3DuwU4dA-unsplash

Pets are for life and also cost money – Make sure that whoever you’re going to give a pet to can commit and afford taking care of animals and won’t just leave them at shelters when the going gets tough. Pets are part of a family. They require love, food, shelter, and healthcare as well just as humans do.

Pets are not toys – Animals have minds of their own and could potentially bite back due to primal behavior or if something is done to them they don’t like. If the recipient doesn’t know how to train and cannot understand an animal, both the person and the animal will suffer.
