Therapy dog teams are usually found making rounds daily in the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC). When the pandemic came, the therapy program had to be halted. But last June 15, staff and patients were visited by some of the volunteer program participants and their dogs.

The volunteers gathered at the center’s employee’s entrance with sign slogans saying, “We Howl for Healthcare Heroes,” “Woof You and Miss You,” “Pawsing to Thank You for All You Do,” “Bow Wow Equals Thank You,” “Hugs 4 Healthcare,” and a simple “Thank You.” The dogs received behind-the-ear scratches, praises, and a bag of treats in return for their kind gesture. It is not known yet when the dog therapy teams will return.

The Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association is just one of the service places to be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eilish Short, the program coordinator said, “We thought, we have access to these amazing horses, so why not use them for something? We thought, if we could visit long-term care facilities, kind of give them something different to look at through the window, something fun to see — just because they are unfortunately not allowed to leave.”

Eilish and another association volunteer, Chrissy Laurie-Morgan brought the two horses, Scooter and Maddie to St. Therese Villa. They spent a Friday afternoon there to spread positivity among its senior residents. Now, the riding association continues to visit senior homes across the region to bring comfort to the elderly.

Animal cruelty in Scotland has increased punishment from a year to 5 years of sentencing. This is due to the newly announced Finn’s Law. A law which was named after a police dog that was stabbed in the head and chest while protecting PC Dave Wardell, his handler, during a 2016 incident in Hertfordshire, England. Service animals back then were considered as “property” and the German Shepherd’s attacker was only charged with criminal damage.

The incident of unfair cruelty led to an expensive campaign by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with other animal rights groups. “We are delighted at these decisions by the Scottish government, which are two vital and hard-fought victories for animals. IFAW UK Regional Director James Sawyer said.

Leash the dog in the yard – properly leash your dog in the backyard to prevent interrupting a mail carrier’s job. A mailman will let you pick your mail up at the local post office if he sees that the area or the surrounding neighborhood is unsafe due to an unrestrained dog. You should also tell your neighbors to do the same.

Install electronic fencing – This is very important to homes who do not have a physical fence around their home. A lack of physical fence will make the mail carrier assume that the property is animal-free which will put one at risk of a leg bite. The risk increases when they’re delivering large packages that cannot be held by small mailboxes.

For some Lycoming pet owners, entering medical facilities such as animal hospitals or vet clinics post a serious risk of COVID-19 infection. But they no longer need to worry as Wolf Run Veterinary Clinic and Animal Hospital offers curbside services. Josh Phillips, one of the clinic’s owners said, “We had to go out, obtain the pet, bring the pet in, examine the pet and then go back out to the owners.”

The clinic is now also operating in a larger facility so all precautions by Governor Tom Wolf and CDC social-distancing guidelines are easily followed. You can find the clinic at their new expanded site at 279 Route 220. Technicians are also available to answer clients 24/7 with their emergency nurse hotline.

A facility comfort dog is what Apple is. The Black Labrador Retriever joined the Montrose Police Department (MPD) last February not to catch criminals. Instead, she works to calm their victims. Apple trained along with her handler, Chantelle Bainbridge, and MPD victim advocate at Canine Companions for Independence in San Diego, California for two weeks. “What a facility dog will do is create a calming environment, kind of reduce anxiety of victims and make it easier for them to tell their story,” said Bainbridge. Since then, victims and witnesses of domestic violence, including a young child who was found to provide testimony in a calm way without fear. Bainbridge’s partnership with Apple has yielded good results and the duo has helped five child victims so far.

Chicha was an abandoned puppy that got hit by a truck eight years ago when Dr. Martin Garcia Cartagena found her. With displaced vertebrae and a paralyzed back legs, Dr. Cartagena was concerned that Chicha would never have the same quality of life other dogs have. After surgery and multiple X-rays and tests, Chicha was able to walk again with the assistance of cart and wheels. Dr. Cartagena brought Chicha with him to New Zealand to pursue his Ph.D. in Resource and Environmental Planning at Massey University. Leaving her in Uruguay was never an option, as the 36-year-old doctor Cartagena said, “I couldn’t do a lot of things without her.”

“It is our mission to save dogs and veterans, alike, to reduce the unnecessary loss of life to euthanized dogs and veteran suicides,” posted Wolfhounds Legacy Corporation – a nonprofit on their Facebook page. However, Hendry County’s weather hasn’t been ideal for the corporation’s service animal training for the past few days. As an effort of assistance Pioneer Community Center has offered its indoor facilities for the Henry-Glades WLC group to use. Because of this, training the service dogs for door opening, public restroom guidance, and off-leash work was completed. Hendry-Glades Wolfhounds Legacy Corporation Group Leader Tyla Bebon said, “Next we will be starting on click training to work specifically on tasks- get help, retrieve items, pick up, carry and specific tasks that each individual veteran may need assistance with.” while thanking Pioneer Community Center for the help.

As pet owners face financial hardships due to the pandemic, the organization has opened a new grant program called “Emergency Boarding”.
