The Importance of Researching COVID-19 Infections on Animals

research on animals

The study of the new coronavirus has placed public health bodies around the world’s entire focus on human health. Yet, it has been forgotten that the virus’ characteristics are zoonotic – disease characteristics that normally exist in animals but can be transmitted to people. This situation should urge scientists and medical professionals to do more research on assistance animals as well.

It has been proven by scientific study that infected animals pass the infection to humans. But, there is little research done to show exactly how SARS-CoV-2 behaves while infecting animals in general. Prof. Tracey McNamara, Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA, along with her colleagues argues that “[a]bsence of evidence is not the same thing as evidence of absence.”

Non-Profit Animal Rescue Shelter Receives Grant From American Humane

non profit receives grant

As the entire United States struggles to maintain basic services in the COVID-19 pandemic, so does the Have a Heart Pet Shelter. Thousands of animals are already abandoned without homes as a result of the current crisis so Have a Heart takes them in for care and aid. While waiting for families and homes suitable for adoption, the Arkansas-based shelter’s food supplies have dwindled. That is why American Humane has chosen Have a Heart Pet Shelter as one of their Feed the Hungry Fund’s beneficiaries. Dr. Robin Ganzert, the President and CEO of American Humane said that, “To stand by and do nothing during this time is unconscionable.”

Indonesian Zoo Animals in Lockdown Depend on Donations

indonesian zoo

In Northern Sumatra, the Medan Zoo and its management ensure that all animals will not starve due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 260 animals in the zoo usually have 3,000 visitors daily. Ever since the outbreak, the numbers dropped to 300 and then zero when it finally closed due to the lockdown.

Since the zoo’s management rely on visits for funding to feed the animals, they have now resorted to donations in order to keep the animals fed and healthy. Some donations came in coins and some came in the form of fruits and vegetables. Not only did the donations come from the locality of Medan, but the help also came from other Indonesian cities and the nation of Singapore.

English Pet Crematorium Continue Operations Amidst COVID-19 Crisis

crematorium service for pets

The Gedling Borough Council’s Pet Cremation Service of Nottinghamshire continues running at full operation despite the coronavirus lockdown. However, social distancing measures are still being implemented strictly. Instead of owners bringing in their deceased companions, their pets are collected from home or vet surgeries.

The crematorium spokesman said, “Currently, we are offering our collection and return service but we are unable to allow anyone to bring their pets to our crematorium.” Every person who wishes to avail of their services is offered different packages such as unique urns, caskets, and memorial plaques. Sheep, deer, geckos, chickens, rabbits, and hamsters are also eligible for crematory services along with their dog and cat peers.

Animal Airlines: Cabin or Hold?

pet travel

So where does your pet go when traveling via air? That depends on the airlines and the animal’s breed. For American Airlines, pets over eight-weeks and can fit under the cabin seat are allowed to be placed in the cabin. For British Airways, only special assistance dogs and emotional assistance animals flying directly from and to the U.S. are allowed in the cabin, while the rest is placed in the hold. But among these two airlines, there is one common rule; Brachycephalic(short-nosed) dogs such as Pugs and Boxers aren’t allowed to fly due to the risk of breathing difficulties. Animals placed in the hold for travel are mostly safe as most airline companies hold this duty in high regard.

British Exotic Animal Rescue Service Faces Financial Hardship Due to Pandemic

exotic animal rescue

The Animals in Hands usually brings rescued exotic animals to care-homes, school nurseries, and parties. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the U.K. lockdown happening, all of these events are canceled.

Mo Safeer, the rescue service’s runner faces problems in keeping the rescued animals fed and healthy. As a result, he has launched a fundraising page of raising £11,500 to keep the service up and running. “Currently, Animals in Hands now have over 150 animals in their care equating to 80 different species, so you might appreciate why our veterinary costs last month were just over £700 not to mention the monthly animal food and animal husbandry costs!”, said Safeer.

Connecticut Offers Virtual Pet Therapy for Students During the Pandemic

virtual pet therapy

As Manchester Community College students prepare to take their final exams next week, the college offers virtual pet therapy sessions as a stress relief service.

Laurel Rabschutz, a pet therapy expert says, “Hopefully, just seeing the dog will help them relax a little,” despite the fact that students won’t be able to pet a dog or cat.

The community college started the program in 2015 as a partnership with Manchester-based Tails of Joy, a nonprofit network of volunteers and their therapy animals.

Before the pandemic, “Students facing the crunch of final exams visited designated classrooms to interact with the pets, and they always emerged feeling better,” said Paula Pina, the college’s Associate Library Director.

Here’s What Property Owners Should Know About Renters With Assistance Animals

what property owners should know

The Fair Housing Act requires that landlords and rental property owners make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. This includes allowing service animals and support animals at rental properties to avoid discrimination of individuals with disabilities.

However, how would one know that an animal falls into one of these categories and not just an owner trying to get past the restriction?

As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act:

“A service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability. Other trained or untrained animals that do work, perform tasks, or provide assistance or therapeutic/emotional support for individuals with disabilities are typically termed support animals.”

While these are different criteria for qualifications, service animals require no documentation and the landlord can ask about the task that a service animal is trained to do.

Your Rights as an Emotional Support Animal Owner Living in a Condo

esa owner in condo

In British Columbia, Canada, the Strata Property Act governs the relations between condominiums and their owners/tenants but doesn’t say anything about animals and pets. What is said, however, is that if you live with a pet in a condominium at the time when a pet prohibition/restriction law is passed, you and your pet will be exempted from the approved law.

But what about tenants who aren’t grandfathered by the law? To grant permission to owning and having an Emotional Assistance Animal in your condo, you have to claim and prove you have a disability. You also have to prove that not having your companion animal would have a negative effect on you because of that disability.

Artificial Intelligence Improves Cats’ Lives

cat kidney disease

Chronic cat kidney disease has been a nightmare for cat owners. It happens randomly, has no known cure, and is the leading cause of cat death when they reach over five years old. A Belgian company named Mars Petcare has developed an AI-powered tool.

The tool is called RenalTech. This system produces an early diagnosis of chronic cat kidney disease. The tool analyzes a cat’s data such as blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, urine specific gravity protein, white blood cell count, and urine pH. With this, the RenalTech system is able to predict if a cat will develop chronic kidney disease in a period of two years with 95% accuracy.
